Are the Tampa Bay Lightning chasing Mats Sundin?

Tim Wharnsby, writing in the Globe and Mail, adds another plot twist to the soap opera .... which has even Montreal dogs yawning (sorry .... can't resist Boston terrier pics).

Sundin's agent, J.P. Barry, said Bob Gainey used his two hours with the player on Saturday to make "an excellent case for why Mats should play in Montreal."

"(Gainey) He also explained that they likely don't have the same latitude to wait too long and would like an answer quite soon, as they have other plans and options in the works.”

The new KHL must be operating under different rules then the old Super League, their season is only a week old and we are seeing a lot of fights.

Damien Cristodero .. TampaBay.com ..... Sundin's agent confirms Lightning contact
The agent for Mats Sundin confirmed Tuesday the Lightning has contacted him about perhaps signing the star free agent, if Sundin decides to play and if Tampa Bay is an appealing situation.

"That's been essentially their message," Calgary-based agent J.P. Barry said. "There have been a few teams lately who weren't initially calling on a regular basis, but said, 'Look, this is our team. We think this is a good team and, obviously, a player like Mats will make it a Stanley Cup team. So, if we're someone you'd look at, we would try to find a way. ..................................................................... Shanahan accepts offer to skate with teammates while agent negotiates with Sather .. by Sam Weinman .. Ranger Report ..... The Rangers are less than a week away from the formal start of training camp, and it's looking more and more likely that Brendan Shanahan will be with them.

The 39-year-old future Hall of Fame right wing, who has been in limbo since becoming an unrestricted free agent on July 1, has accepted an invitation from the team to skate in informal workouts at the MSG Training Center while his agent works out a contract with team GM and president Glen Sather for 2008-09.

"My agent (Rick Curran) is presently talking with Glen. I've made it clear to him that this is obviously the team I want to play on this season, and he's talking to Glen right now," Shanahan said. "I've been optimistic throughout the summer that I was going to be part of the Rangers. I've kept in touch with Glen. He's kept that door open and I've kept that door open. ... And here we are now, coming down to it. It's not like we had a whole lot of decisions to make."

Shanahan is the NHL's leading active goal scorer with 650. He had 23 goals last season but was slowed after suffering a knee injury last January.

Mike Boone ,speaking of stats. You guys have been counting visitors and reads ,etc.Any idea how many registered HIO posters or members there are?

There are just under 2450 reg'd users on the site as of right now. I've no idea how meaningful is, in terms of actual people who are participating, but there it is. --dru

Thank you ,that is more then I would have thought but impressive.

IF any of you are worried about Carey Price, I just got this weeks Hockey News in the mail today and they say the Habs have the most reliable goaltending in the NHL. THey ranked Number 1 over the Sharks.

i'm not worried at al. it is surprising that they'd rate us the most reliable goaltending - considering we are the most young and inexperienced. but i'll take it! go habs go!

Bryan - "stat guys" are anal while "observational traditionalists" are cerebral:-) Anyway, it's time to hit the sack. Early golf games tomorrow and Thursday. I'm really looking forward to playing a new course called Muskoka Bay, in Gravenhurst. I'll be sure to say hello to the laff Muskoka Five on behalf of all HIO posters! Who knows, I might even bump into Georges Laraque while I'm out on the links.

Bryan - Yikes! Six years for this guy - when does the insanity end? After also picking up McCabe, it's pretty obvious that Bouwmeester isn't going to be re-signed, regardless of what Martin may say. He's doing his best to beat out Waddell, Ferguson, and MacLean as worst GM (so far) of the 21st century.

Milbury was still working in this century. It's quite a horse race.

24 Cups's picture

Right you are - how could I forget - and the winner is.....! When it comes to lousy GM's, I think you have to place Milbury in a class by himself.

twocents's picture

I agree... now if JF Jr. had a few more years he may have closed the gap some but, with Milbury being such an a*% on top of being incompetent, I think his position is secure.

Anyone pick up nhl'09 for the 360 yet? looking to get a game going.

sidhu's picture

Shawn, I was thinking of getting a PS3 or 360 - you'd def recommend the 360? I hear both are comparable, though 360 has a better live play option.

jimstr's picture

i have an xbox360. but i would go with PS3 if i were you - its simply a better machine overall (take this! x360's fanboys) all games are crazy awesome i played nhl 08 on it (ps3) and i cant wait for my bud to get the new version because it is amazing. im in awe.

- Pouliot over Price, what a close call!

- Two teams in the running for Huet - Washington and Ottawa?

- Gainey cites short term vacuum for Hab prospects to develop = big centre, experienced Dman in the short term (I know I sound like a broken record:-)

- Gainey alludes to what some of us have said for months - in essence, Ryder lost his job to SK74 (I know he'll score 30 in Boston but it wasn't going to happen here)

- New Year's Eve game, loved every single minute, pure magic, but Dryden broke my heart that night

The Original 24 Cups

24 Cups

Dryden only faced 13-14 shots in that game, the worst thing that could have happened to a goalie, especially one like Dryden who thrived on a lot of shots to get into a game mode. The most lopsided tie I've ever seen. But the Russians knew who the far superior team was and that's all that really counts to me.
