It's official: Roy's No. 33 to be retired

posted by Kevin Mio at 9h34 EST on Sep 11

Canadiens president Pierre Boivin has called a news conference for 3 p.m. today at the Bell Centre at which time he will announce that the Canadiens will retire No. 33 in honour of Patrick Roy as part of the team's festivities celebrating its centennial season in 2008-09.

The Hall of Fame goaltender led the Canadiens to their last two Stanley Cup championships in 1986 and 1993. His stats, his Wikipedia entry and his fan page.

Habs I/O stalwart Robert L. weighs in.

Inside/Out will be at the conference and will have full audio and photos here late this afternoon.

WELCOME BACK PATRICK.

You know what, for all that has been said, Roy was the best goalie I've seen in a Habs uniform, hell, the best goalie I've ever seen play. I may be a young wipper-snapper compared to others on this board, but I remember watching us win the cup in 93, although I was a little too small to remember much of 86. But 93, man, what a year and he was a huge part of it. Even when we had a medicore team, we had a chance to win every night because of Roy. His number deserves to be up in the rafters, as there isn't anyone out there that will ever replace 33 for the Habs.

The Canadiens will, during the course of the season I presume, also honor ALL of the Habs greats that have been inducted to the Hall of Fame with their names hanging in the rafters of the new Ring of Honor! 29 player-names will fly along with the 15 retired numbers as well as the names of 10 builders. 44 players and 10 builders. http://canadiens.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NewsPage&articleid=... wow...

Wow, that IS awesome...and the right thing to do!

It's a great list......but.........Denis Savard????

This is all freakin' BS. I was far more important to the franchise than Denis Savard by a country mile. And really, what girls did Newsy Lalonde have to drop his mitts with? Now I know how Dave Keon feels.

I am not finished here yet. What about John Ferguson? Without him on the team from '63 to '71, the Habs would have gotten "bitch slapped" by the opposition! Bunch of ungrateful pansies!!!

Easy Tommy , a Verdun boy with a Stanley Cup Ring with over 1300 points in the NHL and almost 500 goals , Actually he was born in Gatineau but grew up in Verdun.

TommyB's picture
Cannot dismiss Denis Savard's accomplishments.....but isn't the Ring of Honor to recognize what Canadiens players have done while wearing the Habs colors?

What exactly did he do for the HABS. Who cares what he did for Chicago? "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Robert L's picture
It is all Canadiens players, with at least three seasons service, enshrined in the Hall. Will the add Gilmour in time, despite just two seasons?

Well, 5 seasons with the Habs, a Stanley Cup and he's in the Hall of Fame. The same can be said of Rod Langway...He actually played less years than Denis Savard and he's included as well.

I just hope all the "100th Season" celebrations dont distract the players from winning. I'm sure marketing will have an event planned for each home game honouring something or somebody (jersey retiring, outdoor game, Ring of Honour....what else is planned?) The primary goal for the coaches and players will be to avoid being distracted from all the pageantry and think of the game first.

Robert L's picture
My guess is that the ring of honour will be a way to note all the contributions of players whose numbers aren't retired.

they should have retired his jersey on st. patrick's day ... if we had a home game on that night. hahaha

Welcome Back, Patrick!!

this is totally off topic, but i listen to team 990 online while i'm at work (i live out in san francisco). i really can't stand PJ Stock (stock exchange). i don't think he's at all entertaining or insightful. he also seems to be anti-canadiens. seem like he likes to find fault in them and never likes to compliment them. just thought i'd throw that out there because i was just thinking about it.

Well...he was a Bruin. ****** the notwithstanding clause - The general consensus of an ordinary Habs fan in Montreal

His stats call for it but # 6 and # 3 should be up there way ahead of # 33.

It was a very nice press conference and i like to congratulate Patrick Roy for his days and i'll be looking forward to seeing his jersey raised and can't wait to see him coach the Habs , the sooner the better.

Getting a little ahead of ourselves, aren't we? The guy that's currently holding the position coached them to first place in the division last year.

T-roy West's picture
I also can't wait for the day that he coaches Les Habs. Congrat's Patrick!

was thinking the same thing. the passion he will bring , will be something to behold.

Chorske's picture
Oh GAWD, not "passion" again. Not saying Roy won't ever be a NHL-caliber coach. But "passion" is what got us into the Le Trade mess in the first place. Tremblay was hired because the brass thought he had the passion to light a fire under what was perceived to be an underperforming team. What we ended up with is a decade of futility. Carbonneau has a system and a good hockey brain- if anything, what he needs to do is TONE DOWN the passion, and be less emotional with the refs- it got us into trouble a couple times last year. "Passion" is fine in players, but I want my GM and my coach to be the brains of the operation, not the hormones.

am thinking he would be somewhat mellow by the time (if) he ever made it to that level.

Chorske's picture
Here's hoping. I'm definitely glad we've started the process of bringing Roy back into the Habs family.

Congrats to Patrick Roy, very well deserving for a great player.

Nov.22 11 + 22 = 33

almost cried when he put that jersey on

Phil_T's picture
LOL Red fisher didn't say a word to him...

babbling old fool.

TC's picture
If the truth should be known, Mr. Fisher is far from alone in his opinions about Mr. Roy's number retirement (although I respectfully disagree with him). There are some former "great's" who feel the same way he does. With that being said I find it sad that some here don't show any respect for the man who has been the foremost chronicler of the Canadiens. And trust me having spoken, to Mr. Fisher, he doesn't waste much time wondering about jersey retirements. T.C. tc.denault@habsworld.net

About time. Sorry this was supposed to be on the main thread not a reply.

If it is 11/22/08, our opponent is the Boston Bruins.

Roy in a Habs jersey again!!! beautiful!!!!

I'm watching the news conference on RIS.. it's confirmed as being Nov 22nd, 2008. They are also talking about something called the "Ring of Honor"?

i heard the date is Nov 22, 08 when his jersey will be hoisted.

On the Roadrunner's birthday no less? Cool.

Classy move by the Habs!

Habs fan in SF's picture
i'm all for the habs retiring patrick roy's number 33, but i think they should have waiting a few more years.

Perhaps. However they did promise 4 years ago that any player that deserves to have their number retired, will before their 100th year. They've stayed true to their word... I still think a few more should be up there as well. 1) Elmer Lach (even if his number was 16, without Lach, the Rocket's numbers would not have been as high as they were) 2) Guy Lapointe (can't have Savard and Robinson without Lapointe, even if his number was 5) 3) Steve Shutt (without him Lafleur's numbers would not have been as high. If the Roadrunner's number was retired...) 4) Jacques Lemaire (see Shutt's explanation) 5) Mats Naslund (no forward defined the Habs of the 80's better than him) All are deserving, IMHO...

TC's picture
With all due respect at the very top of the list ... Toe Blake - Hart Trophy, Lady Byng Trophy, three - time Stanley Cup champion and in the Hall of Fame as a player. Oh and he coached the Habs to 8 cups in 13 years. T.C. tc.denault@habsworld.net

Mike Boone's picture
Absolutely. Toe at the top.

I agree 100% Sadly, at the time I was typing that, I was only thinking of the players that are still with us. Blake is more than deserving.

Ya, what the hell? Toe should definitely be retired.... Elmer too. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Nothing on Staal from me, just wanted to find your latest post and say "Sir, well done", on the advance notice you gave on the 3pm press conference. You and your source shall be trusted henceforth (unlike the as-yet-to-be-validated Habs movie posted on Craigslist). As we said, time will tell. Nice job, Habhopeful (and source)!

You're way too harsh. A couple mistakes does not eliminate all the good he did in the community and all the great he did as a HAB. As I have mentioned before, and someone else did here...... All is right with the world now. Go Habs Go!! Habsrule

I've NEVER seen Roy walk by a young fan and NOT sign an autograph. He went to the Montreal Children's the day AFTER he was traded. I think he has a bit of class in him. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

My Aunt was at the Children's that day and saw him and got his autograph for me.
