Patches, we're depending on you son...

Max Pacioretty, a power forward for the future – perhaps very near future – was the centre of attention on the first day of the Habs rookie camp.

See the post below for audio of a lengthy interview with Patches. (Here's the Grammy-winning cover by Clarence Carter, since Boone has provided the lyrics. And because Pat Hickey has brought up the subject as he continues his rehab, here's the original recording of the Carter-famous tune, by Chairman of the Board. Here's the YouTube link to the original, even morbid Patches by Dickie Lee, which wasn't the same song at all. All of this to say that Pacioretty is getting a new nickname...)

Below you'll also find an interview with Trevor Timmins, the team's director of recruitment, and head coach Guy Carbonneau, as well as a chat with the newest Canadien, Robert Lang, acquired on Friday from Chicago.

Bryan, Thanks for the article. I laughed my *** off. Some of the highlights to me were; ("If there's one area where I think we're fairly deep, or relatively strong, it's on the back end," Wilson said. "But it's wide open and everybody will get a chance." 'Actually, Wilson said the top two or three spots on defense are pretty well spoken for, with Tomas Kaberle, Pavel Kubina and newcomer Jeff Finger safe bets.') “Fairly deep or relatively strong” and they only have 2 or 3 sure shots? How dumb are leaf fans anyway? BTW Do you think the 28 year old Finger is a shoe-in because of his 94 NHL games of 'imaginary' defensive prowess or because Fletcher doesn't want to look like a senile old codger for giving him 14,000,000 when they probably could have got him for half of that? This should be a fun year.

Couple of cents (or Loonies based on Teacher's recent feedback) from the peanut gallery: (1) I love the competition for spots. Hardly is anyone guaranteed one which makes it even better. Ryder a 30 goal scorer didn't produce so he sat (rightly or wrongly) yet we still had one of the best offences in the league. Think we could have done that say 5 or 10 years ago? Umm, no. (2) Great day because of a dear friend I met here I got a ticket to the Roy jersey retirement game on Nov.22nd. Being a member of Habs I/O is beneficial in more ways than one! Although I was blessed to see Robinson's jersey retired and remember watching him play in his final years, my fondest memories of the Canadiens were of watching Patrick Roy win the Stanley Cup in '86 and '93 so that will be special indeed.

BB - Glad you got that precious ticket and they will be knowing you by first name at the Bell Center pretty soon and when i read 'my two cents' i automatically think of you , enjoy.

Gainey made an excellent move in signing Lang. Think about it, would you rather have Lang for a whole season, or Sundin for just the end... i mean who knows, lets say the habs are just trying to squeak into a playoff spot at the end of the season (hopefully and probably not but anything is possible) then we realize how valuable a couple more wins would have been at the start of the season. A win at the start of the season is as good as one at the end, so we need this team shored up in all areas before the season starts. And with lang(even though hes obviously not as good as sundin, he still fits the exact description of the type of player that the habs need) we dont have an obvious weakness on our team... except one question mark in the goaltending, which has the potential to be a very nice surprise... I've gotta say, this team looks to be very exciting... whos not excited?

There are some Leaf fans who will still believe they have the better team on paper. Didn't show last year. ESPN's Scott Burnside's Review of the Habs (obviously before Lang trade) ..... Montreal Canadiens: Expectations are as high in Montreal for the coming season as they've been at any time in the past 15 years. With the Habs celebrating their centennial season in 2008-09, Stanley Cup dreams are percolating throughout Habs Nation. GM Bob Gainey has done a masterful job of assembling a deep, talented blue line and a forward contingent that is three lines deep. He added some toughness (Georges Laraque) and more scoring (Alex Tanguay). Carey Price has all the tools to become the next great Canadiens goaltending legend and Alexei Kovalev turned in an impressive performance as the team's go-to offensive star. Burning questions: • How does Price rebound from his meltdown in the playoffs? • Are the Canadiens strong enough down the middle to compete with Pittsburgh and the New York Rangers, the other top teams in the East? • Can the enigmatic Kovalev, who had 84 points and led the league with 47 power-play points, replicate that kind of production? • How good can defenseman Mike Komisarek be? • How good would Mats Sundin look in the bleu, blanc et rouge?

Oilers vs Flames playing like the big team does, as in pure heated battle of Alberta, complete with a fight and an injury (which totally sucks for the kid). I dont see much young talent getting much opportunity this year, it looks (i could be mistaken) like we have a few more "extra" bodies then we did at the forward / center position than we did last year. Other than Dandy ... who are you gonna have sit out?

Jay in PA's picture
Is anyone else thinking about the parallels between Nickname To Be Named Later and Lats as a rookie? Lats was heralded as a power forward prospect and I don't think it's controversial to say that he was rushed to the big club early when he could have used a couple of years' additional seasoning in the minors. Maybe Lats will start fulfilling some of his promise this year at the ripe old age of 21, but I suspect he'll be another Dainius Zubrus in both development and potential. The good news for Nickname To Be Named Later is that the team has a whole lot of size and depth in front of him. Though it will be exciting to see him up with the big club, BG's not going to rush him. The good news is, judging from his interview clip, he knows that his role is to use his body first and foremost. I'm not sure Lats ever really took that message to heart.

Jay - Nice post and your last line said it all.

Jay in PA's picture
Much appreciated, Bryan!

I think that anything that doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Perhaps Lats was rushed in to join the big club but he seems to have survived that experience without much loss of a confidence or production. I don't know if he will eventually develop into a power forward he was heralded he would be but signs are there that he might actually improve his game. After all, he was never looked as a savior, or never had high expectations placed on him the way say Price was. He was nothing more than a french media darling boy... so there shouldn't be much more damage than perhaps a bruised ego and a doze of NHL reality. Carbo being not a big fan of young inexperienced but promising players I am sure that Pacs will have to earn his stripes before he is given a spot on the big roster.

Jay in PA's picture
I dunno... I think that anything that doesn't kill you can still cripple you for life. I would disagree about the early assessment of Lats. Admittedly, he came along at a time when the team was decidedly smaller and more easily pushed around. Plus, as you noted, there will always be a need for a French-speaking hero, and he may yet turn into that. Still, he showed in his first training camp that he could be a force on the ice, and then showed enough in his second camp that he was able to stick on the big team. As he faced regular NHL-level competition, his weaknesses have become apparent, and it's good to see that he's aware of them and focused on making corrections. We'll see his true capabilities when he's 24 or 25, I'm thinking. It'll just take him that long to develop the skills and learn how to use his size effectively. I just don't know if he'll still be with the Habs at that point. If Carbo isn't a fan of young, inexperienced, but promising players, it must have killed him to play Price last year, much less heading into the playoffs with a pair of goalies who were too young to rent a car without an extra security deposit. Maybe Carbo argued and BG forced his hand. I dunno. He's probably not going to have that problem this year, anyway, given the depth we now have.

My guess (and only guess because no-one knows for sure) is that some of the younger players on the roster laster year were indeed BG's calls.

Not to mention SK74, AK46, OB, Lappy? "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

Jay in PA's picture
To be fair, AK46 and Lappy had seen ice time the season before last, and OB was given more developmental ice time in the 5-6 slot. SK74 truly played himself into that role, though. Per BG's comments on J.T.'s blog, he just ate Ryder's lunch, plain and simple. I don't think Timo's point was that Carbo has an antipathy toward rookies so much as that he doesn't want to be forced to put them into roles for which they aren't yet ready. The question is whether or not he was forced to do so with Lats and Price, and I agree that he probably was.

twocents's picture
To also be fair, Ak46 and Lappy were given legitimate roles the year before under Carbo's watch. I think that what were seeing here, as we discuss this, is that Carbonneau has a pretty nuanced approaoch to the whole issue of young players. I don't think any generalization is fair or is easily applicable to several situations.

J.T.'s picture
I don't know about Latendresse, Jay, but I do know about Price. Gainey said flat out when I heard him speak that Price was his choice. He said he thought the kid was ready, and made an executive decision. I have a lot of hope for Latendresse still, though. Most guys aren't even in the NHL at 21, and he's heading into his third season with sixteen goals in each year. He's working hard, he's got a great attitude and he's got undeniable skills. Sure, he's had his ups and downs, but when you consider most kids his age have had those ups and downs in junior, it's a pretty impressive leap on his part. I think when he's twenty-four, he'll be an enviable player to have on the roster. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

Jay in PA's picture
I think when he's twenty-four, he'll be an enviable player to have on the roster. I agree, though I wonder what the team's attitude toward him will be by that point if he doesn't start to fulfill his potential. I hope he shows some progress this year, say, scoring 20+ goals and a similar number of assists. He should get his chances, and the progress he's made in the off-season should benefit him from a skills perspective. Now if he can stop trying to stickhandle and start playing more like a bull in a china shop, we'll see something out of him. Admittedly, that's my one regret regarding Sundin--I think Lats would have learned a ton from him that no one else on the team can really model. Of course, the other question is, when will he be a UFA? Having started so young, I'd hate to see him in danger of departing for the big bucks too soon.

I don't know how you say that with all the youth that has been injected into the lineup over the last 2 years. "Give Koivu a Lifetime Contract"

NCAA players loose their eligibility if they attend camps during the school year. Dartmouth's fall term classes, however, do not start until Sept. 24th. McDonough and Fischer's schools have already started which is why they can not attend camp.

His name is Max Pacioretty ....sounds like his name gives us two options ...Max Pac.....or ....Eddy....I choose Eddy. How about "For Max Sakes" because I hear Max has been recently quoted questioning the favouritism by the NHL towards the Habs with regards to back to back game scheduling. Will he really grow into an MPAC player...only time will tell. How about the "Montreal MPAC" .....should really piss off some soccer fans.
