Morning roundup: Habs named Canada's contender

posted by Kevin Mio at 6h43 EST on Sep 25

At Foxsports.com, Spector, AKA Lyle Richardson, writes that the Canadiens represent the best chance to win the Stanley Cup for Canada. Read it here.

Stu Hackel of the New York Times hockey blog, The Morning Skate, chimes in on the exhibition game from Roberval, and he's not too complimentary to the NHL Network's coverage of the game.

James Mirtle has some interesting stats about the NHL preseason, which is ridiculously packed with games this year.

Habs Fans for Life!

This season is quite promising: Price lost weight, Kovy is going to be faster thanks to his new haircult, Tender took some power skating classes and Markov said this after the game:

"I was thinking slapshot," Markov said through a grin. "But that's tough, on a breakaway. So I had the move and did that. Every time, it's different. You have to have at least a couple of moves."

Wow, he hardly ever spoke before. Must have taken power public speaking classes!!

Let's stop this exhibition game non sense and get on with the real season (except for the game on Sunday, because I have tickets...)

Go Habs!

I found this link on NHL.com where they describe Komisarek as the #1 hitter in the Easter Conference. They also have a link to a video about his off-ice workout regimen. Check it out!!

Thanks for the link! That's awesome. I noticed Higgins behind Komi in yoga class.

I also didn't mind all the barechestedness. :)

Nice flashback to Gilmour smashing the penalty box glass as a Hab.

You can do much better than that, mate. We've only seen those top10s 1000x each, as I'm sure you have too. Give us SOME credit. Sheesh.
I've seen you find eskimo-footage of a resuscitation spell performed on the Artiste in the middle of the bloody Yukon. In perfect hi-def! The heck is this?
C'mon, mate.
Nightmove49? C'mon.
Get us sumpin' good. Sumpin' like uhhh...I dunno...coach Babcock telling a Detroit City reporter that the Habs are the team to fear this season.
C'mon. I believe in you, mate. Said it before.
You can do better.
Peace Out.

Good news on Mayer, very good goalie and nice guy. I spoke with him prior to camp.

Robert Mayer has been rewarded with a contract from the Montreal Canadiens.

The 19-year-old goaltender agreed to a three-year deal with the Habs on Thursday after attending training camp on a tryout.

havok's picture

I do not know if this is old news or not:

Anyone know anything about him?

Steiner's picture

Not old news.

And, Mayer plays in the Q - where I work. His team will be in Montreal on Friday, so if any of you want to check him out playing you should get tickets to the Montreal Juniors game.
I'll be there (as I work for the team) and will be sure to give a report, and well as some pictures.

hope matt carle is ok.all this preseason stuff is bunk.doesnt mean crappola.ok the slight injurys to koivu, kovey and whoever are of concern.anyone know when the centennial plaza will be finished? cant wait to see my $200. brick there.

hz - If you look below to the post by Forlando you'll have the answer to your post.

Not to sounds pessimistic (cause god knows I never do) but I don't like this. Too much hype and talk about how Habs are a contender. Can the team handle the pressure of being a favorite? Admittedly it is much different than the pressure of just having to make playoffs.

I hope that carbonneau and gainey are trying their hardest to keep the players grounded and level headed in the midst of all this hype and festivities and high expectations.

HabsFan2's picture

Actually, I was thinking the same thing. All this pressure in an already pressure filled town. Lose one game and your garbage, win two and it's Stanley cup time. Then add in the obvious language flaps that will pop up.

Hopefully Gainey's calm demeanor becomes as contagious as the flu bug did two seasons ago!

Go Habs Go!!

Ack!!! Don't say the "F" word!!!

I don't understand why Dandenault is playing? and playing defence?
He's not supposed to be on the team this year. What's going on? Guve his position to a younger player so they can get some experience. And Dandenault isn't even a good D man, and didn't play a single game last year as a D man. Get rid of him!

cautiousoptimist's picture

I don't think Dandy will be in Mtl for long, but I have a feeling Carbo is playing him because he has 10 exhibition games in two weeks and a half dozen banged up vets, and wants to spread the workload around while still fielding a team that can win. And don't forget, Dandy's not terrible, and on most teams he'd play every game -- it says something about our depth that two of our pressbox boys from last season are on first lines elsewhere this year.

2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

showey47's picture

I think dandy is playing so much in hopes that another team takes notice of him and may be willing to part with a 7th round pick/future considerations for him.

Greg's picture

Just read this on NHL.com:
"Evgeni Malkin scored a goal and added an assist for the Pens, who scratched Sidney Crosby as a precautionary move because of a sore groin."

Hahah! Next headline: "2008-09 NHL season cancelled due to widespread groin injuries"

"widespread groins"

Too funny.

Forlando's picture

Hey guys,

I work in the building in front of Bell Center. This morning while working to work I saw a guy right next to me waiting to cross the street...who's the guy??..Mathieu Carle!!!! I was very surprised to see him there so I asked him how he felt. He didn't give me much detail but he said he was fine and that it looked worse than it really was.

So there you have it, first hand Info!!

Timo's picture

Cool. Impressive that you could actually recognize him in the civilian clothes. Good on him, the hit looked nasty.

Ian Cobb's picture

Boys and girls! We don't need anyone to tell us that we have a shot at the cup this year. We, the most perceptive and most informative hockey fans in the world, have been treated and shown how this game is to be played and won for 100 years. We recognize quality and expect performance, from management to through out the organisation.

We now have all our ducks in a row again, and we are going to be treated to a magical year. By Christmas our youngsters will have the polish and seasoning to excel along side our veterans.

So get ready for a season of pure thrills, starting with all of us meeting up in Mtl. at the 2nd annual Habs Fan Summit. See ya all there!
Ian

WELL said!!!

Bugs's picture

We don't need to worry about the Priceberg. I think we can all agree on that. But about Marky, I admit to being worried. Not that he won't dominate during the season because I know he will.
The PLAYOFFS however are another story alltogether. I was MUCH more disappointed in him than Streit because we ask MORE of Marky and as num1 D, it's HIS priority to elevate MORE than his teammates.
ONE under-performance is forgiveble. But this wasn't the first time.
Have we already forgotten how badly inefficient he was against the Caners, two years ago?
Bugs hasn't.
Wake up Marky; we need you.
Peace Out.

twocents's picture

Well, I'll admit that Markov could have played better in the playoffs but he hardly stood out as a disappointment with a team full of under-achievers, especially against Philly. Sure we expect and need more from him than others but he played closer to his regular season play than many others. You have to look to him when explaining the power play's problems but he wasn't alone and your man Streit, quite honestly, was dead fricken' weight. Let's face it, the only player who truly stepped up against the Flyers was Koivu. And, there were rumors that Markov and Komisarek were both injured.

Bugs's picture

Yes. "Injured" right up to the World Championships.
I disagree about Marky being our best D-Man against the Flyers. In my mind, it was definitely Josh Gorges.
Josh was also our best D-Man vs Boston. Add the Breezer to that last one too.
Marky was "inefficient". There's no DEGREES of efficiency. You either are or you aren't.
Marky wasn't. And Streit's gone so whadda we care? Marky remains.
I'm not saying he can't win the Norris. He certainly can.
And Joe Thornton can win the Ross too.
That don't mean doodly-squat in the playoffs.
I want Marky to step up and TAKE COMMAND. To BE the num1 D-Man Star everyone knows he CAN be, not muddling affairs in the post-season with a ready-made injury excuse on stand-by, just in case he's "inefficient".
That's not good enough.
Peace Out.
