Ka-chingle bells

Thanks to the irrepressible Robert L for this list of games that will be in the DVD box set coming out in October – in plenty of time for Christmas shopping:

1960, April 24 - Canadiens beat the Toronto Maple Leafs to win their fifth consecutive Stanley Cup. This is the only disc in black-and-white.

1975, December 31 - The famous New Year's Eve 3-3 tie against the Central Red Army team.

1977, May 14 - Canadiens edge Boston 2-1 in overtime to claim their 20th Stanley Cup.

1979, May 10 - The 5-4 overtime, infamous "too many men on the ice game" against the Bruins. That was the one that produced the clip of a bemused Don Cherry saluting Forum fans.

1984, April 20 - The Good Friday game against the Nordiques, featuring wild brawling.

1986, May 24 - The clinching of the team's 23rd Cup against the Flames.

1993, June 9 - The most recent Cup against Gretzky's Kings.

1996, March 11 - The Forum's final game against the Dallas Stars.

2003, November 23 - The Heritage classic outdoor game at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Red Fisher still gripes about how cold it was.

2008, February 16 - Habs come back from a 5-0 deficit to beat the Rangers 6-5 in overtime.

They made sure to preserve the '67 Leafs beating us. That damn game is on Leafs TV every 2 weeks I think. Someone, somewhere has to have the '71 Chicago Game 7 or the comeback against the Bruins in the same year. I was only 5 years old so I, along with thousands of others would love to see those games. The 2008 Ranger game, that's just embarassing. I don't agree with the WinterClassic or the last game at the Forum but I can understand why they chose those. My other suggestions would be : -- '86 game Roy stood on his head against the Rangers -- '76 clincher against Philly -- '86 Game 2 Calgary, OT winner by Skrudland, that's when we won the cup that year. Someone has to have those old games!!!! Go Habs Go !!!

Top 10 list of games not on the box set as humbly chosen by me and all known to still exist. Now I'm not saying that these ten are better, just think of it as an alternative selection. 1 - 1959 Stanley Cup Finals Game 5 Montreal vs. Toronto Habs win 4th straight Cup 2 - 1965 Stanley Cup Finals Game 7 Montreal vs. Chicago Habs win Cup 3 - 1976 Stanley Cup Finals Game 4 Montreal vs. Philadelphia Habs win Cup 4 - 1978 Stanley Cup Finals Game 6 Montreal vs. Boston Habs win 3rd straight Cup 5 - 1979 Stanley Cup Finals Game 5 Montreal vs. N.Y. Rangers Habs win 4th straight Cup 6 - 1986 Adams Division Finals Game 7 Montreal vs. Hartford Claude Lemieux in OT, Rookie Roy on his way 7 - 1986 Wales Conference Finals Game 3 Montreal vs. N.Y. Rangers Famous Roy Overtime performance 8 - 1993 Adams Semi-Finals Game 5 Montreal vs. Quebec Overtime goal by Muller changed series 9 - 1993 Stanley Cup Finals Game 2 Montreal vs. L.A. Kings McSorley stick game 10 - 1994 Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals Game 5 Montreal vs. Boston Roy 60 plus saves in overtime win I've noticed many people on here commenting about the 1971 playoffs. For the purpose of the site I will reiterate what I told Robert a few months back. CBC has erased all of their copies of all the games ... a long time ago due to storage issues. Some of you have mentioned the CBC affiliates. Unfortunately, back in the pre-VCR days the copying of programs was very expensive and most of the affiliates at the time didn't have the equipment or the wherewithal to tape "a hockey game". I recently spoke to someone at a CBC affiliate and they told me that even if they had the equipment they wouldn't have taped a "hockey game". Somebody else mentioned CBS in the States having the game. CBS also taped over many of their hockey games (including the 1971 playoffs) with soap operas, so they're gone. For example, all that is left of the 1970 playoffs is the overtime from game four (last's about a minute) that ends with Orr's famous goal. This footage featuring the voice of Dan Kelly is licensed from CBS by CBC. Ironically CBC broadcast the game with Danny Gallivan & Dick Irvin on the call but it is long gone. I wish I had better news but it is what it is. I have a friend who has been through various tape libraries in North America (CBC, NHL, US networks) and mostly anything up to about 1975 (earliest VCR's) is gone. For example between 1968 and 1974 there are only three known full Habs games that still exist. The 1968, 1969, 1971, and 1973 Cup finals exist only in highlight form, and not in game form. Hope that helps summarize it a little bit. If you have any questions, don't hesitate, or refer to Robert L's site where this has been discussed at length. T.C. tc.denault@habsworld.net

T.C. I have a friend in Toronto by the name of Paul (who has a vast amount of Habs and NHL hockey films) explained to me that he was going to let the Habs borrow any pre-1975 Habs films he owned to produce the commemorative DVD set. Seems like the organization was not interested in any footage he had of Vezina, Joliat, Morenz, etc. They told him they were not interested. I knew nothing of any game footage or highlight reels existing of the Habs until I met this fellow Paul from almost 20 years ago. I firmly believe all the Habs' winning Stanley Cup 30 minute hightlight reels (50's to the last one in 1993) should have been digitally remastered and be part of the DVD set. Just one question to Carl Lavigne, Ray Lalonde or anyone in the Marketing Department of the Montreal Canadiens. Why did you not include them part of the set? I'll still never give up on someone out there having the 1971 or 1973 Final games. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

TC's picture
All of those reels are owned by the NHL and have been shown on the NHL network, Espn Classic etc ... With that being said I think the Canadiens wanted to market the box set as a greatest games box set, similar to one that came out for the Flyers last year. So, if you're searching for full games, it rules out highlight packages (maybe a future set ??). I know Paul, and I know that most of the footage you're talking about consists of quick clips that were used for movie houses back in the day. I would think that footage would be more valuable in a team history DVD and not necessarily a greatest games set that they're currently selling. Sorry to ruin your dream but as somebody who knows Paul, then you're surely aware that footage of the 1971 and 1973 finals games may be sitting somewhere beside Jimmy Hoffa. Wow, thanks for the info about the lack of game tapes. That's depressing!

I think the Good Friday game was and remains a disgrace. To include it in the 10 "most memorable" is ludicrous. There was a quarter final playoff game between the Bruins and Montreal in '71 that more than deserves to be there. Down 5-2 after 2 periods, the Habs came back to defeat the Esposito-Orr led Bruins 7-5. Showing the "brawl in Montreal" is catering to the Cherrys of the world and forgetting what the game is all about. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

Shame on the Habs marketing department. For years I was looking forward to a special DVD boxed set starting from the earliest known footage to the present. Sad day for all of us "Retro" Habs fans! "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Wamsley01's picture
The CBC has no footage of anything from the 71 playoffs, They taped over the games to save $$. I am shocked that the McSorley illegal stick is not in this set. That was a way greater game than the clinching victory. Also surprised that the Whalers game in 86 is not there yet the Heritage Classic is??

RetroMikey's picture
There were alot of CBC affiliate stations across the country during the 70's and I am certain one station must have a master copy hidden somewhere in their vault of the 1971 Stanley Cup Final. I know that the some Habs players from the 70's were presented a 30 minute highlight reel compliments of Molsons for winning the Stanley Cups in 1971, 1973, and 1976-79 inclusive. I have these on DVD and these should have been digitally remastered by the NHL and the club to be put on the DVD set. Excellent films with Alex Trebek and the late Dan Kelly narrating. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

According to TC Denault the tapes are gone and the CBC pays CBS royalties of the Bobby Orr goal because they do not have the tapes. From Robert L's page "At the time of posting, T.C. wrote: "The oldest known complete Habs game known to exist is game three of the 1959 Stanley Cup finals against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The cup clinching game (game number five is also around). Sadly, there are a limited amount of games from this point on until 1975 that are known to exist. This is a list of what is known to be still around from this time period. Keep in mind that this list is compiled from hockey game trading websites (obviously the sale of games is against current copyright laws). After 1975 and with the advent of VCR's many games have become available but there are some exceptions." So call the Habs lazy, negligent, whatever you like. But this sounds like a fair reason to me and those two guys have put in a hell of a lot more research into the matter than I.

I would have really liked them to include game 7 of the playoffs a couple of years ago against the bruins... where the habs came back from a 3-1 deficit in the series... I can't remember the year exactly but it couldn't possibly be before 2001... but I do remember Zednik scored at least one of the goals...

That's embarrassing, man! I think I'll lift the edge of the goal crease, crawl in and hide under it!

In good fun, Robert. I'm an unabashed fan!

Sorry to say but this DVD sucks as far as I am concerned. This DVD caters more to the Pepsi Generation fans. You could still get the Outdoor Classic game on DVD where it's available anywhere. The 2008 Rangers game is available on Torrent sites to download and the post 70's games are available on eBay or ESPN classic to record on your DVD or blu-ray DVD players. I still believe they should have has more vintage games like the 1965 Game 7 final Chicago-Montreal final as well as the 30 minute Molson produced (Chetwynd Films and Anheuser Busch also mad 30 minute films along in the 70's Stanley Tools) Stanley Cup highlight films showing us winning the Cups from the 50's to the last one in 1993. The 1976 Habs-Flyers game final and the 1978 Habs-Bruins game 6 final should have been inclued as well where it hows the post game celebrations as well with players like Robinson, Gainey, Jarvis, Cournoyer, etc.. celebrating with champagne and splashing Dick Irvin all over his face and clothes with the bubbly stuff! I still believe the club did not look into producing this DVD in more detail. There should have been bonus DVD's included in the set like the Habs players featured on the Legends of Hockey series, The 75th anniversary video should have been included as well which had some nice vintage film of Georges Vezina and Howie Morenz along with Auriel Joliat skating along the Rideau Canal. As an added feature, they should have included the classic motion picture childrens film from 1975 titled "The Mystery of the Million Dollar Hockey Puck" which stars the Montreal Canadiens. Seems these games are produced by Warner Video, the same folks who produce the greatesst games of all time in other sports like NFL football as well as Major League Baseball. I, for one will not be duped into buying Habs DVD set. The 1960 final and the 70's games will more likely be the same quality as my DVD's at home and not digitally remastered. There are alot of vintage films out there of our beloved Habs but no effort from the club to put money into producing a fantastic set. I've got all of these games already on DVD. If they are to show the 2008 game against the Rangers, will it be RDS broadcast or the MSG Network broadcast? A total disappointment set coming out for all Habs fans who cherish the vintage games as well. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

I think you hit the nail on the head, RetroMikey. Younger fans will appreciate those "recent" games, but to my mind this DVD takes away from the Beliveau -led '71 and the Henri Richard '73 teams. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

sounds like a great dvd, cant wait to get one.

For 93, I would have preferred Game 2, with Desjardins picking up the hat trick in OT. It is one of the more memorable games in NHL history, let alone Canadiens history (which for some time are the same thing).

Wamsley01's picture
It is the greatest game I have watched in my 28 years as a Hab fan. I am shocked it was not included.

Have to agree with you there, although I'm happy the Cup-winning game is included, as my old VHS recording is sadly deteriorated beyond viewing. Hard to beat Cole's call of Desjardins' overtime winner...DESJARDINS!!!! I'd love a DVD collection of that entire '93 Cup run, but I don't suppose it's in the cards. edit: a clip of Desjardins' last two goals in that fabled game 2. Still gives me chills... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9ulEiSwx0w

"The Comeback" game was the 19th, not to be picky, I'll just never forget that date for the rest of my life. And does anyone know if these games are in full broadcast form or are they just highlights?

anyone know how much the box set is going to cost

According to Futureshop.ca NHL: Memorable Games In Canadiens History (French) The Montreal Canadiens Memorable Moments box set is a compilation of the 10 greatest games in club... More Info Price: $55.99

Strange selection of games. I would much rather see some more games from the 60s. Didn't we win a few cups between 1960 and and 1976?!? The Good Friday game against the Nordiques speaks to the era of the Battle of Quebec, this is not really a hockey classic. The Habs coming back from a 5-0 deficit to beat the Rangers 6-5 in overtime was great and all but it was a meaningless game.

Chuck's picture
Unfortunately there aren't a lot of complete games from the 60's or earlier. Years ago some idiot at the CBC decided to save some shelf space and reused a lot of the video stock. __________________________________

RetroMikey's picture
You are correct Chuck in some idiot erasing the games but that was in Toronto. What about CBC affiliates in Montreal, Vancouver, Regina, Winnipeg, etc.? I hear the games are still in reel format at the National Archives in Ottawa. What about the classic 1971 Game 7 final between Chicago and Montreal which was the televised on CBS? If the Canadiens organization put forth a little effort they could have gotten this game from them which was the first time an American station televised a Stalnley Cup final at night to see if their ratings would be boosted. "We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets"

Wamsley01's picture
Apparently CBS and WSBK have alot of the early 70s games. Maybe they wanted to much $$$?

Drive_For_25's picture
Meaningless game?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! That game was the definition of our season last year, let them say we're down and out and give them all a slap in the face with the best hockey we've played in a long time. Meaningless?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

The definition of the Habs' season involves their playoff performance. What does Drive for 25 mean? 25 good games during the regular season? I think not.

RGM's picture
These were voted on by fans, so blame it on us. There was a poll on canadiens.com a few months back where people got to vote for the best 10 games in franchise history, and this is what the people have chosen. Re: The Comeback--without those two points, we don't finish 1st overall, and more importantly, the confidence that came out in the team from that point forward was readily obvious. To say that it was "meaningless" is woefully false. ----- Go Habs Go!

Wamsley01's picture
That game may have been a meaningless regular season game, but it was one of the most entertaining games I have ever seen in Canadiens history.

GHG33's picture
What was the game that was voted in but there was a problem so it was not uncluded? (coundn't find the game footage or something) Drive For 25 Is Alive!

No idea,Gainey did a radio show in Halifax and he mentioned that they could not find one of the games.Apparently several years ago,CBC erased or throw out a large number of tapes to "make room".
