Why is this man smiling?

George Gillett got a bargain when he bought the Canadiens, writes Gazette Sports Editor Stu Cowan.

The 2004-05 lockout might have been the best thing that ever happened to Gillett. After going a year without NHL hockey, Montreal fans were desperate for a fix, and the 21,273-seat Bell Centre has been sold out for every game since the beginning of the 2005-06 season.

And while some fans might complain about high prices at the Bell Centre, 21,273 keep buying tickets despite the fact every game is available on high-definition TV on RDS, which drew an incredible 587,000 viewers for last Tuesday's exhibition game against the Buffalo Sabres in Roberval. And the first exhibition game at the Bell Centre on Friday night against the Ottawa Senators was sold out, with fans paying full regular-season prices. It's called supply and demand.

• Carbo says the kids are alright.

• Who's up? Who's down? François Gagnon thinks Kyle Chipchura helped himself last night and Pavel Valentenko didn't.

• Marc De Foy on a big night for the Latendresse brothers.

Funny there is a lot of criticism of GG. But he has done a lot of things right... He has hired the right people to run the organization.. He isn't afraid to spend money for a competitive team ( Molson had a self imposed cap that culminated in 3 years in a row missing the play offs). GG has been very aware of what the Habs mean to Montrealers, Quebecers, and les Canadiens faithful across the country.. Level criticism at the fat cats in Hab town that didn't open their wallets to save the team. if not for GG you could be cheering for the Las Vegas Canadiens ... Canada's second largest city couldn't find the financiers to buy the most storied NHL franchise??? Edmonton... was able to keep their team with a big group of investors until Mr. Katz purchased the team last season.. Edmonton could but Montreal couldn't???

He's smiling cause he's on his way to the bank and his hockey team has a legitimate shot at Stanley this season, my take ;-)

WOW!! Bargain you say!!! This deal is only overshadowed by the ILLEGAl Binks robbery. How do you say Lets Make A Deal.No one inthis province was willing to ante up for the most storied team in Canada .How sad.Tip of the hat to Mr.Gillett for making things better.GO HABS!!!

Good take, Keith. Makes sense to me. Guess I'd be smilin' too. Ear to goofy ear. Peace Out. ______________________________________________________ Lord Bugs Potter, esq. Earl of Fluppitburg, Baron of Flopshlupshire and Knight of the Flannel Republic.

Why is this man smiling? If you were related to Austin Powers, you would be too! Shagadelic baby!!!

Bugs's picture
Oh, be-haaaaave, Yeats! Though put a dress on the man and a crown atop his head and does he not remind you of anybody? Ye-aaaah, baby, ye-aaaah! Hm-hm-hmmmmm, ye-aaah! Ro-ight, thass enough. Peace Out. ______________________________________________________ Lord Bugs Potter, esq. Earl of Fluppitburg, Baron of Flopshlupshire and Knight of the Flannel Republic.

George, Bob and Carbo just have to make sure that no one steals the Habs' "Mojo" in the Centennial Year.

GG is making people pay full price for pre-season games when almost all other teams are charging 1/2 price. he certainly knows how to get the money out of us. Last week in a carling cup game in Liverpool against a league one side they charged around 25 GBP at the gate for entrance when arsenal charged 10 GBP. same tactics being used on both sides of the atlantic by a man who could care less about the supporters of either teams.

I agree. They should have sold the team to the same type of penniless beggars like Claude Brochu and company when they owned the Expos. How dare he try and turn a profit. I'd rather have a team that's poverty stricken and threatening to leave town every other week than one owned by a shrewd businessman. Uncle George Sucks.

everyones got to love an owner who gouges their fans, good point there lad.

He's being sarcastic...

Given that those knuckleheads running the team at the time built the Molson Center without a well-considered study of what the tax implications were, we are all lucky that the Montreal Canadiens even exist today. I may be talking my book, but they really, really should hire a decent economist and statistician.

You would need to travel with the team to conduct market studies in the other cities as the year unfolds. Also several trips to Europe to compare these.Amazing...

The question is with the salary cap, could they afford me? Living in MTL vs. NYC is gonna cost you a bunch of Quakers!

They might have to play an extra exhibition game but that and travelling with the team should be enough to cover it.

I am married with a pair of 12-yr old boys and, get this, I am a basketball coach. It will cost them some decent coin. (Karate, not hockey, took with the little guys. Go figure?)

21,000 seats at $125 average (Canadian dollars).Mind you the taxes would suck big time.

Send an offer letter to me and we'll see if we can work something out. The dudes running your economics right now leave a lot to be desired.

Ah! alias,if only dude.

Moey's picture
One thing about it always being sold out is because a large number of the seats are corperate owned, which is a drag for fans who just want a couple of tickets to see a game. I turned down tickets on Friday and I know those seats would be empty that night, so "sold out" still means empty seats, it's just that they've been paid for.

what you on about? i at no point brought up why there are empty seats.

Moey's picture
Translation: You're complaining about the price, it's irrelevant, the regular fans have a hell of a time getting tickets period. There are empty seats and its a bloody waste, but not for Gillette. GET IT?

i do get what your talking about. but i'm not really complaining about empty seats, that happens every game it inevitable. what im on about is the principle of charging full price for a game that everyone else charges half price for.

The positive side to all of this is that it has been a boon to minor league sports across North American. I grew up in the Bronx and have been a Yankees fan all my life. The wife wanted to have the little guys experience a game there before they close the old Stadium. I had not been there for two decades and almost bust a vein when I found out what four decent tickets would cost. I ponied up, but think the kids would have had an even-better time seeing the Yanks or Mets AA squads play in a smaller venue. You're much closer to the game and the kids don't care, They're just there for the cotton candy and Kracker Jacks.

It's business. Nothing more, nothing less.

yes it is a business where he wants to make a profit. but when the business standard is to charge less for pre-season games it could be seen as not very responsible on his part.

Got to pay for that new billboard, dude.

Getting back to Sunday morning on the 26th before we head back to Ontario. There is always the mountain if not old Mtl. We could all go over to Stubbs place for breakfast!

I'm seeing a new pic of you, Ian. Try refreshing the page or rebooting your PC. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

Gord Miller asked me how many people mistake me for Uncle George. I don't dress as well or have as much money. On the other hand, I don't owe quite as much either.

Both links are working for me.

Must be me ,can get the first but not the second still.Sorry Bryan

Frank - It must have been the ghosts from the HockeyBuzz, com article that had Vinnie coming to Montreal for Lats. Not on hockeybuzz but reality Danny Kristo had a goal and an assist as his Omaha Lancers won their final exibition game 4 to 1.

Not sure about ghosts but certain that a fair amount of "spirits" were involved in that one.

The latendresse bros should get lots of time playing together this year if Olivier can make the bulldogs.

Ian Cobb's picture
Still cannot upload picture. Need a break!

Well ,you did get rid of the old one.Als are playing at 1pm.When was the last time you were in Salisbury?

Ian Cobb's picture
Seven years ago. And I will be watching the Als, Grey Cup and Stanley Cup all in one year. If they got their politics together, I would love to move back to the greatest city in N.A.

showey47's picture
Ian, are you going to the al's game on the sunday after duck hunting saturday night?

Ian Cobb's picture
I was, and had tickets lined up, but I thought we might hang out with some of us on Sunday. And if it is a nice day we might brouse around the city somewhere. Breakfast or walk around old Mtl. before heading back on the 401. What are you going to do.?

showey47's picture
My best friend is a scout/player personel for the al's, so the wife and i go to games for free(sitting with the players families) a couple times a year. The extra tickets i requested for the summit was for him and his wife. We are staying at his place saturday night but i would like to meet up for a morning after breakfast with the group. Of course after our saturday night victory celebration. Then probably head to the al's game or walk around downtown montreal before the football game.

The TCH exit area at Salisbury is really building up .Was in NB last week and on Wednesday, while passing through towards Fredericton, was meeting a guy there for supper at the Big Stop (truck stop). His earlier ETA was 30 minutes later then mine, so thought I would go down into Salisbury and check out your barn. However upon arriving there ,found him only 5 minutes away, so didn't get the chance. And yeah, I hear you.Miss her myself, but don't believe it will ever be the same again. And life goes on.

It hurts me to say this. I'm not even sure if I'm allowed to post this here so if I'm not, please delete this post. Anyways, I badly sprained my ankle yesterday playing basketball but I have 2 tickets to the game tonight. I'm looking to sell them. Section 113 Row P (Seats will be disclosed to buyer) $250 Nothing will be discussed on this site. Email me at ow_hellguns@yahoo.ca for details.
