Great game!
• • •
Nice move by Beauregard to draw Welch into a penalty.
• • •
Price: 33 saves ... and counting
• • •
GLOVE SAVE!!!
to preserve the tie.
Ignore previously posted doubts.
• • •
Great PK
• • •
A double-minor to Markov? Hooking and unsportsmanlike conduct
I didn't see it.
• • •
Big night for Weber.
He doesn't look out of place on the PP.
• • •
Shots are 31-30 Canadiens.
Wide-open, entertaining game.
• • •
Subban has some after-burners, and the crowd loves him.
• • •
Round III: Max Lapierre, who was criticized for not dropping 'em last season, outwrestles Keith Ballard and calls it a night.
• • •
You know it's pre-season when Tom the Bomb is on the PP.
• • •
Scary: Someone named Mike Duco got a big hit on Markov.
• • •
Big cheers for Impact and Alouettes wins on the big screen.
• • •
This DeBoer dude coaches a more entertaining style of play than Jacques Martin did.
• • •
Mike Komisarek makes it very clear to one Kendal McArdle that Price is off limits.
Then Ryan O'Byrne goes with Horton.
What's with him and the Panthers?
• • •
The new, thinner Price looks quicker and more agile.
• • •
YANNICK WEBER!!!
This kid is going to be very good.
• • •
Round I: Frankie the Bull, a spirited draw with Anthony Stewart, who gets the extra two minutes, and a misconduct.
• • •
Ooh, that first-wave PP is as sweet as your first kiss!
AK46.
• • •
Gregory Stewart, who's been good tonight, pasted Ville Peltonen.
• • •
Desharnais makes a lovely goalmouth feed to Aubin, but Vokoun is a wall tonight.
• • •
Penalty shot: Horton, save.
Crowd comes alive.
• • •
Kovy puts a sick move on Horton and the Canadiens get another PP.
• • •
AK46 on the PK?
Not a good idea.
Anyone else nervous about Price's glove side?
• • •
Another sellout, but many empty seats in the Reds.
• • •
I love Thomas Beauregard.
And if there's anyone I love more than Thomas Beauregard, it's Mathieu Aubin.
Together, they enhance my appreciation of Ryan Flinn.
When does real hockey start?
• • •
Anyone else nervous about Price's glove side?
• • •
Entertaining first period. Shots were 12-11. Canadiens had better chances.
• • •
Love that Weber kid on the point. His shot is always on net.
• • •
Ian's boy Shawn Matthias goes for hooking.
More first-line magic on the PP.
Kovy has lost weight and looks quicker.
Some vintage Kovy magic on their last shift.
• • •
That first-wave PP was brutal for a while, starting with a faceoff loss, then P.K. Subban and the kids brought it to life.
• • •
Alex Kovalev OWNS this crowd.
• • •
R.J.F. Umberger?
No, Anthony Stewart.
• • •
If only he were bigger: David Desharnais. Terrific skater, always around the puck.
• • •
Carey Price vs. Tomas Vokoun
And Jassen Cullimore, who's still counting $640,000 against the
Canadiens' cap in the So-Long-Sergei deal that unloaded Samsonov to
Chicago, is starting on D for Florida.
• • •
New pump-the-crowd music: Baba O'Reilly.
Guy Carbonneau indicated today we won't be seeing Georges Laraque make
his CH debut any time soon – and certainly not Wednesday night, when
the Boston Bruins and dastardly Shawn Thornton come to town.
Laraque's groin tweak, sustained even before the intra-squad game in
Pierrefonds, may be more troublesome than initially thought.
Because of injuries, the Canadiens will keep 30 players around for games against Detroit and the Bruins.
This could be last hot dogs at the Bell Centre for most of the kids.
François Gagnon predicts Max-Pac, B-Max, Yannick Weber and Gregory
Stewart will stick around for a while.
Stewart would seem to be competing for a roster spot against Mathieu
Dandenault and Kyle Chipchura. But a prolonged Laraque absence perhaps
favours Stewart sticking around.

MIA: Brock Trotter

Wish me luck spelling this guy's name:
Florida is dressing centre Janis Sprukts
For tonight and for the remaining games of the exhibition season:
One game post, which I'll update through the course of the evening and top with room audio after the game.
This will be the one-stop shopping place to post Comments on the game. I won't do confusing multiple posts.
And then once the puck drops for real in Buffalo on the 10th, live game blogging begins.
Ça va, mes chers partisans?
Excellent decision from coaching staff. The only deception in my book is Valentenko.
Cut list
http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/260711.html
Am I right in assuming that Ryan Stewart should be Gregory Stewart?
About who we were expecting, no?
From the few games I did get to catch, the biggest preseason performances among this group came from Desjardins, Subban, Trotter. We'll see them on the big club eventually. Maybe not this year, but soon.
Disagree, good buddy.
Weber. By FAR.
Weber.
Peace Out.

Book Preview: "Honoured Canadiens"
http://wwwrealitycheckeyesontheprize.blogspot.com/2008/09/sneak-book-pre...
The 242 page testimonial to Habs greatness is a beautifully packaged and well written accounting of 54 individual careers.
If you have been following the Canadiens centennial updates, these profiles within are the 54 players, managers, and builders about to be honoured in the Habs "Ring Of Honour".
The book is chronologically paced by year of Hall Of Fame induction, beginning with Howie Morenz and ending with Patrick Roy.
Haven't seen enough of Webber to gauge him defensively, but he seems to have a clutch shot. Gotta remember that kid has zero NHL experience and seems really comfortable.

No, I won't help you find the Holy Grail!
Huh. Off topic: the report out of Boston is that Ryder and Savard aren't meshing well.
L.M.A.O.
Ryder has been better with Bergeron.
If I have digested the games I have both seen and heard, and the reports I've read, right, despite all our overall organizational depth on D, we remain a little thin in NHL ready defensemen. It seems Valentenko still needs work, Subban is making it fun but he is still going back to Junior, Carle is injured and so hasn't really been evaluated. Players like Belle and Henry, who some here speculated this summer might push for a job, are not. Which leaves us Webber, who seems quite ready offensively and not quite defensively.
So while there will be forwards who will be very hard to cut, I don't think Carbo will struggle with his defense decisions. This is not where we want to be. If someone gets hurt, for an extended period, I was hoping Breezer would essentially remain 7th D while a youngster, who we hated to send down, would be on stand-by ready and chomping at the bit. It's not looking like that will be the case.
Which raises again the idea that we are one more quality NHL defensemen short of being ready for a deep playoff run. If Lang proves to be the balm for our centre needs look for Gainey to be on a constant vigil to pick up a D-man who can play top 4 minutes when needed. I bet he would be willing to sacrifice any of our bottom 4's ice time to accommodate such a player, if he can be found for the right price. This might be where some of these young forwards, who do seem ready, end up going.
I agree with you twocents, I am not entirely confident in our defence at the moment. Sure we have 6 guys who can do the job, but as you said injuries can always happen, and we were spoiled in that respect last year. Secondly it is OB's second year and sometimes players take a step back. I hope this isn't the case, and Schneider would have looked real good here. Valentenko's development was hurt I fear by his shoulder injury last year, and doesn't seem to have a shot at this point anyways making the big club.
http://www.barragecafe.com/sports/
I would have liked to see Schneider too, but even half his waiver-reduced salary wouldn't have fit under our cap unfortunately -- at least not without dealing Dandy, and even then we'd be right up against it. The additions of Lang, Tanguay and Laracque have brought us about $11M closer to the cap, with only Smolinski's and Grabovski's salaries cleared out. I think Gainey wants to leave a little cap breathing room, especially at the beginning of the season.
1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat
2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."
You're probably right and I'm just jumping the gun a bit. I seriously don't understand the fact that Dandy is still with us, but do consider the possible benefit in keeping him around and treating him right. Players talk about different teams and organizations, Gainey's way of treating players with respect can pay off in spades over the long run. I would also rather carry Dandy than a prospect who will never play.
http://www.barragecafe.com/sports/
It's hard not to jump the gun when we're on the cusp of what promises to be a great season! I think Dandy gets dealt, and either Maxwell, Chipchura, Pacioretty or D'Agostini pushes Laps into the pressbox and eventually out of town.

I agree with Dandy, but somehow can see him staying now...ughh.. The only guy who would replace Lappy in my mind would be Chipchura, since the other guys don't really play the style of game we need from that slot? I'm keen on giving Maxwell and Pax time in the A to play a lot of minutes and get a shot if we get an injury to a player on the first two lines.

2cents - Many have talked about this all summer , some wanted a puck moving 'D' while others like me wanted a proven shutdown type for this important year but Gainey has said that he is satisfied but with Carle's setback and a disappointing Valentenko his thoughts may have changed. I'm not worried about our 'D' but as you say they must stay healthy and a major injury could really hurt and it may be depth by committee that solves this till the trade deadline where this could probably be Gainey's priority for the run. The signing of brittle Brisbois who was injured 4 times last year , though mimor injuries , does not make sense for a 7th 'D' who brings certain things but will never be used as a shutdown. The Sundin saga may have cost us a Teppo Numminen who signed cheap in Buffalo and would have been a true backup to everything our team needs as a 7th 'D' for the run.
nightmare, I know several people have been saying this all summer but, with camp playing out the way it has, I think the situation has changed some. I am sure your right that the hapless laff saga cost us other opportunities and Numminen right now would look really good. But, with the hope of Valentenko and Carle and the promise of Webber I don't think Gainey would have been shopping even if he wasn't occupied with the dithering Swede. He may be starting to feel a little different now. I wonder if there might be some interesting cap trims out there next week. But, as you point out, this can wait some.
2cents - Gainey usually sticks to his guns and with 24 players now he has to do a little tinkering and having Breezer and Dandy as your depth on 'D' and both right handed you wonder , why was it so important to sign Breezer right away cuz he wasn't going anywhere and it's not as if he competes at training camp lately due to phantom injuries so it was probably to please the french press and Carbo. Will Gainey pick someone up on waivers is questionable but when your managing a cup contender you may have to be a little more flexible than in the past and be more pro active as we all know the price at the trade deadline is high unless your looking for a 1st string goalie (Huet), lol.
'' to please the french press or Carbo '' ?? .... I dont know about Carbo but the french press doesn't care about wether Brisebois plays or not.
'' to please the french press or Carbo '' ?? .... I dont know about Carbo but the french press doesn't care about wether Brisebois plays or not.
That's a little harsh on Brisebois -- Gainey's too classy to leave a loyal, serviceable, no-complaints Hab out in the cold with no contract in what is likely his final year. Plus Brisebois's making pretty near minimum wage, and he's more solid defensively than anyone in Hamilton. He's decent insurance and inexpensive too, and I'd definitely take him over Dandy, who makes more than twice his salary.

2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."
It will be interesting to see how it will all play out. Gainey has already shown to be more pro active during this off-season and you have to think something will give with Dandy before opening day.
2cents - I'm quiet happy with Gainey's moves this summer and i'm sure this camp has changed their minds about hesitating to bring up prospects during the season for a smell like 29 other teams do and i agree Dandy is of no value now so his departure is eminent to free up bucks. Can't wait for the season to start and we should have a good run and making the playoffs is our prime objective and we'll take it from there.
Yeah, I am really looking forward to seeing this team play some real games. Can't wait.
Right now:
Markov- Komi
Hamrlik- O'Byrne
Gorges- Bouillon
Breezer #7
#4 is O'Byrne- why the kerfuffle?
Gilbert
2008/09 is the season of the Habs
G-Man, If everyone stays healthy I am happy with the top six. But, the chances of that happening are fairly small. Breezer is ok for spot duty or to cover for 4 or 5 games at a stretch. But, if someone goes down for a couple of months or a sequence of a couple of players for several weeks each, I am not comfortable having Breezer play long stretches. As I said, I was hoping camp would show that one or two of Valentenko, Carle or Webber were ready to go and only held back by the backlog.
I am not trying to stir up a kerfuffle, I am just saying that along with all the positives coming out of camp, the fact that we are a little thin in NHL ready D is showing it self to be true. If our 7th D was someone other than Breezer I might feel differently.
