TSN weighs in

The Toronto Sports Network likes Montreal's hockey team. The season preview, written by TSN closet Habs' fan Kelvin Chow, concludes:

This season may be Montreal's best chance to make a run for a championship, only because there could be considerable changes to the lineup next summer. Kovalev, Tanguay, Lang, Komisarek and captain Saku Koivu will all be eligible to test the open market, while Higgins, Plekanec and Guillaume Latendresse will become restricted free agents. Depending on this year's performance and what the salary cap looks like next July, next year's team could look quite different with one or two key players out of the equation. But that doesn't mean Gainey isn't prepared. In five years as general manager, the former Habs great has done something that hasn't been seen in Montreal since the days of Sam Pollock and Frank Selke - assemble a legitimate Cup contender while developing a rich pool of young players waiting in the wings. Fourteen of the team's 23 projected regulars were drafted by the Canadiens, with ten of them selected since Gainey took over in 2003. And thanks to great scouting, the team also boasts an impressive stable of prospects that include Matt D'Agostini, Ryan McDonagh, Max Pacioretty, P.K. Subban, Yannick Weber, Ben Maxwell and Pavel Valentenko. With or without the Stanley Cup, the Canadiens appear ready to deal with long-term challenges if and when they arrive.

• Stephanie Myles on the roster cuts.

• François Gagnon looks at the prospects who are left and assesses who might have a realistic chance of making the team. Hint: The initials are KC

• Pierre Durocher writes Yannick Weber has been the surprise of training camp, Pavel Valentenko the disappointment.

Sergei Gonchar gone four to six months.

•  Raffi Torres hurts his shoulder in a fight, out for six weeks.

• Is Nikolai Khabibulin on the trading block?

• How the Wings recruited Hossa

• William Houston in the Globe and Mail on how newspaper staff cutbacks affect hockey coverage in the U.S.

• Terry Frei remembers Paul Newman

Everybody likes the old jingle, Kris. And rejoice, for it lives on, on RDS and TSN. As for the new jingle, well, the first contender anyway: I thought it was pretty good! I say that WITH nostalgic biasness, mind. Does it sound like Celtic Football? A bit. Well, really, only if you have soccer on the brain. (I'm not saying YOU, Kris, just something's that's come up). Point I'm making is: If you picture hockey-play in your head while listening to it, should go fine. I chose moments when guys are freakin' out over important goals or victories and fans reactions in the stands, especially kids. It seemed to go well with the tune. Only problem is...there are 4 more to listen to, which I assume will be just as good. I liked it! But you know what? When my Boys are winnin'? A broken tuba would sound good too. Peace Out. _________________________________________________________ Lord Bugs Potter, esq. Earl of Fluppitburg, Baron of Flopshlupshire and Knight of the Flannel Republic.

"• From Robert L.: the HNIC theme song finalists. " I still like the old HNIC theme song... CBC should just suck it up and pay the royalties for the old one. All the finalists really suck in my opinion and will only re-enforce my watching of the Habs on RDS :D It's a lot more intense in French!

laffs made Pitch for Schneider and Bobby Ryan of the Ducks , i thought they were re-building .. TSN.ca ..... http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=251254&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_nhl

Bobby Ryan, drafted 2nd behind Sidney Crosby....definitely qualifies as rebuilding. Admittedly, Schneider doesn't qualify as rebuilding, but it states that TO "would have aggressively tried to trade the veteran defenseman for a draft pick"...I fail to see why you would object to this type of move (except for it being by the laffs).

Reb - The laffs were offering an unconditional 1st round pick and if that's rebuilding then i'm wrong and Ryan though decent hasn't worked out and their are questions about his dedication and past.

Robert L's picture
It was conditional. It could be no higher than 6th. Still though, it's not how you would tend to rebuild. I guess the Leafs evaluate fat Ryan higher than next seasons prospects. Oh, who am I kidding. The Leafs don't evaluate. They guess and play spin the bottle. That's how they messed up with signing the wrong Finger. A rumour I heard is that they asked for negotiating rights for Hamilton assistant coach Ron Wilson, then hired the Sharks fired Ron Wilson. At least they haven't drafted any dead guys yet...figuratively speaking, at least!

The TSN article is fun, I agree with almost every point except for the "expendability" of Halak. He's signed for two years. That suggests that he and management are both happy with his role as #2. Every time he has stepped in, he has excelled. Marc Denis is in Hamilton and there he will remain unless an injury brings him up- and even then, I think I'd rather see Desjardins.

... any article which is positive towards the Habs is a good article. But in this case, it is just so very discouraging when corporations, such as TSN, are so blatant in promoting their product as something good for the consumer, when the reality is that the promotion - such as the TSN article - is so self-serving. The fact is they ran the Habs piece today for the simple reason they are featuring the Habs tonight, and they want to increase their market share. It's all so transparent.

Was Price in nets for the entire florida game? Seems like both goals scored where over his shoulder when he was down on his knees. It has Melanson written all over it... I am afraid that if Rollie continues with Price's development he'll end up like Theodore. Habs have addressed their scouting need a few years back... perhaps they need to look at a new goalie coach.

Timo Melanson didn't ruin Theodore as a goalie. Theodore took care of that all by himself, along with certain members of his family. As for Price's performance the other night, he allowed 2 goals on 36 shots and he never saw the 2nd goal. And the first goal was a bullet. If people are looking for 100% perfection, they won't find it anywhere in sport or in life. That's just the way it is.

Timo, that is an interesting point. Though I have not heard much criticism of Melanson over the years. I have always heard he is an excellent teacher when it comes to positioning and lateral movement and that has shown over the years. I personally think Price is ready to have a killer year and he has looked good overall so far. But those two goals the other night were similar and I wonder if he is, as you suggest, being schooled to drop into butterfly a little too quickly. The one thing that has always struck me about Melanson's situation is that he is the only remaining coach that Gainey inherited and I have been expecting him to bring in his own man. Moog would seem to be a natural fit. Though Patrick would be a consensus favourite, I think he may not make a great assistant coach. His um...ego and mouth might be a bit much in that role. This is, of course, useless idle speculation because if Gainey has decided to start the season with Melanson there is very little chance he will change course during the season. However, if Price consistently shows this propensity throughout the year, maybe Bob will come to a similar conclusion.

Thinking more about this, it is one of Gainey's strengths to evaluate individuals. I like that he is not a clean the house kind of GM. He kept Savard and Julien around and evaluated them before he dismissed them. Elsewhere, he has retained Timmins who preceded him and look what a good call that has turned out to be. If Gainey has stuck with Melanson thus far there have to be solid reasons. Of course that doesn't mean he's perfect. As Jim pointed out Theodore had lots of distractions and weaknesses off-ice that contributed to his fall. Not to mention that even at the peak of his career there were aspects of his game that concerned people. I am sure the whole hockey world will have its eyes on Price and we'll all see if there are any bad long-term habits. As I said above, I believe he is primed to have a great season, he seems very prepared. Time will tell.

Khabibulin on the block? I just died of not surprise. As great as it is to see Huet land a nice fat contract with an improving team (and out west, praise be), Hawks management has made a royal mess of things by signing him. A great young team, returning fans, a couple of the best young players in the NHL... and all we hear about is the goaltending controversy. It must be a huge distraction in the room as well, and I'll bet they're missing Lang's 'quiet but solid veteran' presence right about now.

Have to agree with TSN about this season. It is a very good chance that may be some time coming again. However, they do like to take shots at Serge Savard don't they. From 1984/5-1993/4, the Canadiens had the second-best regular season in the NHL after Calgary, made the second most Cup finals (3) and won the second-most Cups (2). Gainey would do well to match that, never mind the Selke and Pollock years.

Where did our duck pics go on our summit site. And Rejean can not set up for us until we have tour #s.

Poor Gonchar. Ex nihilo nihil fit

TSN's assessment of the Habs is right on. Through great drafting and careful trading, Gainey has done a tremendous job. Not only do we have an elite team, but we have a whole pipeline of talented young prospects that should keep us that way for years. It's good to see Gainey being given credit for his genius and hard work. I'm thrilled by how much excitement there is around the Habs even before the season begins. I even see quite a few cars flying the flag. Expectations have not been this high in at least a decade and a half, and the players seem determined not to disappoint. All reported to training camp in great shape, some worked hard to lose weight and increase their speed; and with the excellent training camps shown by some of the youngsters, the veterans will have plenty of motivation to do even better than last year.

St. Louis and Pittsburgh are both desperate to replace injured defensemen, and Pittsburgh is particularly hurting with its top two D-men out. (Hal Gill and Brooks Orpik aren't exactly a top 2 pairing.) Our Dandy might be an inexpensive temporary fill-in for Gonchar, Whitney or Johnson, and when they return he can play as a winger on a forward squad that's thinner than ours. And we know Gainey is a master at buying low and selling high... Maybe we land a 3rd-round pick? 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

I doubt there is much desperation before the season even began. Maybe ones they lose say 10 in a row they might get worried but at this point I doubt they are worried enough to give anything decent in return for dandy. Maybe some cash to compensate for the new ridiculously expensive (albeit nice) scoreboard.

Pittsburgh has 2 Up And Comin offensive defensemen in the works, they will be using Kris Letang and Alex Goligoski in Place of Ryan Whitney & Sergei Gonchar...I highly doubt Pittsburgh would try and take on Dandenault... I agree with TSN's view of our Canadiens... this is an exciting year for us Hab fans... just hope the pressure doesn't prove too much for our boys... I hope Latendresse steps up his game this year... he's been given many chances to prove himself but if he doesn't produce this year, I think Willy will end up as a bouncer in Club 'Super Sex' (not that there's anything wrong with that) On another note, I heard on the news this morn that Janet Jackson cancelled her 1st Montreal show at the Bell Centre, after a sound check (LOL). So what, did it finally dawn on her that she's sounding more and more like her brother???.... or did she happen to pass by a 'real' mirror on the way to the stage. She kills me...
