A win and some cuts

posted by at 21h59 EST on Oct 1

As you read these words, Bob Gainey and Guy Carbonneau are meeting the players who won't be making the trip to Mont Tremblant.

Matt D'Agostini.

Ben Maxwell.

Gregory Stewart.

Never a pleasant task, but that's hockey ... especially with a loaded team like your Montreal Canadiens.

"Nobody feels comfortable," Guy Carbonneau said, summing up the training camp's Darwinian nature.

"When we started camp, we had 52 players. All of them want to be in the NHL. That's where 21,000 people are yelling. That's where they make the money."

For some, the roar of the crowd and ka-ching of the bank balance will have to wait.

But maybe not for long.

Headed up north for bonding: Yannick Weber (Francis Bouillon was injured tonight), Kyle Chipchura, Max Paciorett.

Still a Canadien: Mathieu Dandenault, who played more than 18 minutes on D, showcased, perhaps, for a pressbox full of pro scouts.

Audio from the room and Carbo's press conference:

The coach

• The Captain, Parts I and II

Christopher Higgins on line chemistry

Jaroslav Halak on a solid start

Alex Tanguay (in the mellifluous language of Molière)

Very nice win.

Great cycling by Koivu, Higgins and Tanguay.

Could be a great line this season.

•  •  •

Tabarnac! Boston has 33 shots.

•  •  •

Gregory Stewart is an NHLer ... but maybe not here.

•  •  •

Not a good O-zone penalty, Gui.

•  •  •

That PP is somethin' else with Weber.

•  •  •

That Bruins D has more statues than Dominion Square.

•  •  •

Nice goal.

Chara had an open side on the PP.

3-1

•  •  •

Savard and Ryder both belted.

Big thumper Weber penalized.

•  •  •

My new fave: Robert Lang.

Super-smart player

•  •  •

Excellent PK.

And Halak is sharp.

Re Ryder:

Look, it didn't work out. End of bloody story.

Not my favourite hockey player. But a good guy. And to his credit, he's
has never trashed management or bitched about what happened here.

•  •  •

Bruins will start the third period on the PP.

•  •  •

Ron Reusch points out Canadiens have scored 20 pre-season goals, 11 on the PP.

•  •  •

Pierre Durocher of the Journal de Montréal: "Can you smell the Cup?"

Oh yeah, it hangs in the air like weed at a Grateful Dead show.

O'Byrne rescues a Weber giveaway by tying up Ryder.

•  •  •

Weber stepped into Kobasew on a goalmouth scrum.

•  •  •

I'm torn between wanting a shutout for a Halak and a goal for Ryder to shut those clowns up.

•  •  •

Two additions who are VERY good at passing: Tanguay and Lang

•  •  •

Canadiens are skating them into the ice.

Hey, is Patrice Bergeron playing?

Marc Savard?

•  •  •

Shot right on by Tanguay, Lats cashes the rebound.

That PP is sick!

3-0

Time for Julien to start a goon show.

•  •  •

Another PP, created by the line of Kovy, Koivu and Higgins

Wow!

Dandenault flew to catch up to Lucic and negate a break. Great hustle.

•  •  •

Lovely rush by D'Agostini. Nearly finished off by Stewart.

•  •  •

Does Kovy work this crowd?

Goes for a skate on a delayed penalty.

Pavarotti at La Scala.

•  •  •

I like Chara.

He is a tough, honest hockey player.

If he had Pronger's temperament, half the Eastern Conference would be on the DL.

•  •  •

Weber whips one off Fernandez's pads, Breeze buries the rebound

2-0

•  •  •

What a blast!

Kovalev

1-0

•  •  •

Second period will begin with two Bruins in the box, and Jeremy Reich off for 3:49 or less.

So lots of PP practice.

•  •  •

Lang 4-1 on faceoffs. Chipchura 1-3.

Chara played 8:34, Dandenault 7:15 (!!!)

The book must be Belt Yelle. O'B buried him.

•  •  •

Halak sharp on Kobasew.

Chara and Ryder on the PP: makes the booing easier.

•  •  •

No penalties through almost 15 minutes.

•  •  •

Pleks line is flying against the lead-footed Bs

•  •  •

Weber: two giveaways on one shift. He'll learn to play D in Hamilton.

•  •  •

AK46 buried Yelle on the boards near the Bruins bench and they didn't like it.

•  •  •

Shots are 7-2. Fernandez is solid.

•  •  •

O'B playing the left side again, with Weber

•  •  •

Great sequence starts with Tanguay scooting down to negate icing. Then he and Koivu and Higgins had the puck on a string.

•  •  •

Pleks stoned on a great feed from Kovy.Shot right at Fernandez.

•  •  •

The guy who yells KO-STO-POUL-OS! is in mid-season voice.

•  •  •

Man, that Wheeler is a big one.

•  •  •

OK, booing Ryder I can understand.

•  •  •

Booing Chara.

The point eludes me.

•  •  •

Saku Koivu will play his first pre-season game tonight when Boston visits the Bell Centre.

Koivu will centre Alex Tanguay and Christopher Higgins.

Last season's top line will be reunited: Tomas Plekanec between Andrei Kostitsyn and Alex Kovalev.

The other lines are Robert Lang centring Guillaume Latendresse and Matt
D'Agostini and Kyle Chipchura between Gregory Stewart and Tom
Kostopoulos.

Yannick Weber gets another start on D, along with Mathieu
Dandenault, Francis Bouillon, Josh Gorges, Ryan O'Byrne and Patrice
Brisebois. The Top Three, Andrei Markov, Mike Komisarek and Roman
Hamrlik, have the night off.

This lineup would appear to punch Max Pacioretty's ticket for
Hamilton. No surprise to anyone who knows how this organization
nurtures and develops its talent.

It's an important game for Chipchura, who was very solid against
Detroit but was overshadowed by Pacioretty. It's also a big game for
Stewart, who may have to step up and provide some muscle against the
Bruins.

•  •  •

Zdeno Chara is expected to make his first pre-season start for Boston.

The Bruins' likely lineup: Marc Savard centring Michael Ryder and P.J.
Axelsson; Patrice Bergeron between Marco Sturm and Chuck Kobasew; big
horses Milan Lucic and Blake Wheeler flanking Stephane Yelle, and a
rock-'em/sock-'em trio of Jeremy Reich, Shawn Thornton and Vladimir
Sobotka. Chara will be paired on D with Dennis Wideman. The other duos
are Andre Alberts-Matt Hundwick and Mark Stuart-Shane Hnidy.

Manny Fernandez to start in nets, backed up by Tuuka Rask.

Had to go to http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/mellifluous to understand what you meant when you wrote "Alex Tanguay (in the mellifluous language of Molière)".

The correct term should have been dulce and not mellifluous according to the English language Wiktionary "dulcet from the Latin: dulce (sweet). (Mellifluous is more likely to be applied to a person's writing style while dulcet would only be appropriate for describing audible tone, voice or tenor."

Now onto to Chaucer.

Good for my edumacation, Georges Drouin

"When we started camp, we had 52 players. All of them want to be in the NHL. That's where 21,000 people are yelling."

umm, yes, only for the Montreal Canadiens! where else do they sell out a 22,000 arena ... and even in preseason?? it always confuses me why free agents - especially "quebecois' don't want to sign here cuz it's the BEST hockey city to play in ... oh yeah, most players can't handle the stress. i find it rather sad that guys like briere, lecavalier, or any other francophone would not want to put on their resume that they played for the greatest hockey franchise in the history of the sport, where it's in there home province ... pussies! we have more yanks who show more proudness wearing the CH than any of the so called proud quebecois. i say "F" them.

Bugs's picture

I wholeheartedly agree as a Frenchman myself. I was DISGUSTED that Brière turned his back on us. All of us. I think the word "pussy" in that context, is perfectly justified.
However,
The québécois who are BROUGHT UP as Mtlers NEVER want to leave. Their pride in wearing the CH cannot be disputed.
So, in that context, Vinny was drafted by TB, raised in TB, given everything in TB, lives in TB, family and friends in TB.
He's a TBer. Nothing wrong Vinny's choice to re-sign there.
As for Brière, let's face it: in hindsight,
Brière or Plecky?
Brière or AK-46?
THAT turned out ok for us. Turned out ok because the hockey-gods agreed with you too, SanFran: You turn your back on Your Nation?
And ta hell witya.
Rot in Philly, Danny-boy.
Peace Out.

I whole-heartedly agree, Mike. Uh... not that I'd know... from experience... um... that is... um...

I can't for that Buffalo game next week. Let's kick some A$$!

Go Habs!

The whole Maxpac scenario is reminding me of last year, where I felt that Carbo wanted Price to play alot in Hamilton rather than back up Huet, and Bob overruled him. I would not be surprised at all to see the same thing happen this year, but I'm not fussed either way. I think a year in Hamilton will see Max just bursting to make the big club, and next year there will be no stopping him.

cautiousoptimist's picture

I think one of the reasons Bob wanted Price to get some NHL experience was that he had already decided to deal Huet if at all possible, since he was been in line for a big raise at the end of the season. He knew he couldn't afford to give big raises to both Huet and AK46 and still sign all the impending UFAs at the end of 08-09.

Maybe we see Pacioretty in Higgins's spot next year for the same reason?

1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat
2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

Here's my unsolicited two cents: too many posters on the main page at HIO this year. Makes for a confusing and disjointed read. I'm not worried about Boone and Stubbs, but I nearly slit my wrists when Stephanie Myles posted every three seconds about her trip to the exhibition game. . .

I'd stick with Stubbs, Mio, and Boone wherever he wants. You got to dance with the ones that brung ya. I'd hate to open access to every Gazette writer and then get redundant posts on the same things (e.g., the back-to-back cuts announced 20 minutes apart).

End of unsolicited rant.

coutNY's picture

It might beneficial in organizational sense to separate out the columnist into a separte section and reference it on the side from the main blog that support the BIG three (Mio, Boone, & Stubb). Not to disrepesct the columnist but to encourage blog strings and discussion among the users without worring everyone has moved on to a more recent post otherwise the blog Habs I/O is just another news source that has morphed into informational media such as a "Kuklas Korner" or "Spectors". By far this site is the MOST fan friendly site and should not discourage interaction by bombarding us with new threads.

The Teacher's picture

LOL Doug, I love it! You make very good points that traffic is way up there, reaching end of season levels from last year and waaaay above the year prior to that.

"I'm not worried about Boone and Stubbs, but I nearly slit my wrists when Stephanie Myles posted every three seconds about her trip to the exhibition game. . ."

HAHAHAHAHAHA now this was funny. I would harbour a guess that Stephanie is still getting used to all this. She certainly loves to take up space, but is it intentional?

I also think she submits her articles at the wrong time. Stephanie, submitting something new during live game play is not ideal IMO as it will receive the least attention during that time and will quickly be forgotten in the craziness that is post-game blogging on Boone's spot. In my case I usually refresh the page and don't check what is new until later. My advice is to save pieces for the evening on non game days after people have yakked themselves out on Boone's "about last night" and before Stubbs releases his article setting up the next game, those seem to be the downtimes and where I think people would react positively to new things. I do like your reports after the game though, they add a new spice to the site.

Just a reader's suggestions, don't kill me for it people ;)

Just an opinion. Been here for two years and love it. I certainly respect your right to disagree; the openness of expressing dissenting opinions regarding the site's operators and each other is what makes it a great place.

twocents's picture

That and the free Habs tickets.

Bugs's picture

As well as the free wings.
Peace Out.

twocents's picture

Bugs, I am not trying to be a jerk. I am only looking for a sign. Are you a big fan of Springsteen?

Bugs's picture

What, what, what? I thought you were asking me the joke I made after the 2nd period. I didn't realize I had misunderstood.
Springsteen, what? Do I like him? Sure. Is he my idol? No. Why?
What? What?
Peace Out.

Ahhh, Ok, never mind... I thought you were someone I recognized. I guess not. I'll stop with the left field questions. Pardon me.

LOL?

Why do you keep asking and why does he seem to not want to respond?

http://www.barragecafe.com/sports/

twocents's picture

I am not sure why Bugs doesn't answer but I am trying to ask something without asking it openly. You know, I have a hunch I am trying to verify. But, I mean no harm or offense. If my hunch is right, I would be happy for Bugs.

The Teacher's picture

How was Seattle Bugs?

It was nice.
But I still prefer MY hockey team to theirs.
Peace Out.

Can I just say, again, that I'm CRAZY excited for this season? 20 pre-season goals? 11 on the PP?

Also, ummm, Kovy-Pleks-AK46 with Markov and Tanguay on the point?

Just makes me smile the kind of smile i haven't smiled in a while.

moser17's picture

Is Tanguay an effective point man on the PP? I didn't know that. Nice.

Count up to almost 600 bro.

i wasn't aware that playoff games counted, that's why i was curious Latendresse couldn't be sent down. gee too bad we made the playoffs.

as for stewart, we'll see him around

Bite your tongue.

I heard Bouillon was injured. What's the injury?

Mike Boone's picture

They wouldn't say.
And by jive-ass rules of the un-NFL, they don't have to.
