Canadiens defenceman Ryan O'Byrne was struck in the face by a puck near the end of this morning's practice in Verdun and went to a local hospital for stitches and further evaluation.

Maxim Lapierre's shot deflected off O'Byrne's stick and hit him in the face, forcing him to leave the ice bleeding from the cut.

O'Byrne wasn't the only one dinged this morning. Goalie Jaroslav Halak was cut beneath the right eye by the stick of Robert Lang in a goalmouth scramble, Lang's stick piercing Halak's cage. A trip to the bench and quick repairs by athletic therapist Nick Addey-Jibb sent him back into ation.

Christopher Higgins and Mike Komisarek did not practice, undergoing a little preventive maintenance back at the Bell Centre. Both are expected to skate tomorrow. Georges Laraque was unable to skate, according to head coach Guy Carbonneau. The doubt increases that he will be able to play in Friday's season-opener as hoped.

Kyle Chipchura filled in on a line with Saku Koivu and Alex Tanguay, though very little line practice took place, while defenceman Alex Henry, on waivers, skated with the team, his first full-team practice in a few days as he rehabs a back injury.

Is it just me, or does Sergei Kostitsyn look freakishly large in the picture?

Rooster's picture

That's what i was thinking... but it kinda looks photoshopped, cause everyone looks so much bigger than koivu

~Listen to the rooster! He knows what he's saying!

Howard Berger dis's his Leafs...http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?post_id=17093&blogger_id=3...he keeps it up and I may start to like the guy.

Switched to Firefox but damn security system...oh well ,you know where to look.

Down at the bottom it says Price received retro-looking goalie pads that he's going to wear when they sport the vintage sweaters. Now THAT I gotta see...!

Nightmare ,noticed that as of tonight there are only two teams over the cap .However, 11 teams do not have a 23-man roster and in fact several have only 21 players .Will be interesting if injuries hit these teams hard. Also wonder how the NHLPA feels about this ,losing membership and all.

Washington Caps send Alzner(D) ans Bourque(F) to the minors and put Quinton Laing(F) on waivers, down to 22. More on Afternoon Delight by Richard Pollock ..... http://www.illegalcurve.com/2008/10/06/afternoon-delight-12/

Puts them under the cap(no pun) but leaves them with only 6 defensemen .

H - Federov has played some 'D' this pre-saeson just in case.

Yeah ,saw that too. You have to be creative in this cap world.

i think his defensive skills are a little weak considering he couldn't hold onto kournikova

yeah but he scored several times on a single pass from Bure!

That act is almost ready to take on the road!

Very well played, both of you.

Must confess that at first thought SF had misspelled Kovalchuk's name and was puzzled by the fact that Fedorov and him had never played together. However did clue in and as punishment spent 15 minutes looking at Anna in a bikini. If that doesn't teach me a lesson ,nothing will.

leafs put mark bell on waivers. kinda embarrassing to be waived by the leafs, don't you say??

We don't need Gaborik. Hes an injury prone, over priced bum. Let some other dumb team pay him 10 mill a year and the habs will continue being the deepest team in the nhl with all the prospects coming up.

If a healthy Gaborik is a PPG player for 10 mill, why not sign Kovalev and Koivu for the same price as just Gaborik. Gainey is much smarter than that, besides the fact that trades would have to be made in order to get Gaborik and be under the salary cap means its very unlikely. We saw how hesitant Gainey was in the Hossa trade, this is a man of patience and he'd rather give Higgins more time to progress than to give his potential away for an older, temporarily more productive player.

On another note, I've never thought Higgins was going to be our next captain... Infact I can see him being trade bait eventually just not yet as our epth is our primary weapon. Thats why teams like Tampa still pose no threat to us as once you get past center ice, you have a good opportunity to score...even more so when its our 3rd and 4th line that are still stacked with 50+ point getters.

The Hamilton newspaper is reporting that the Bulldogs have sent Latendresse, Beauregard, and Lacasse along with a couple of try-outs down to Cincinnati.

Eklund is reporting multiple reports out of Montreal that Gaborik is going there....NOW CUT IT OUT...you guys know he uses us as a "source".

H F - Eklund going to be working OT in the crap department in the next 24 hours or so as all teams must have their 23 man roster in by tomorrow, so you like hockeybuzz.

Nightmare ,don't even know if he is or not.Just me being sarcastic...non!! I do like his team salary Cap section and occasionally will read some of his other contributors but him... only if bored.Akin to standing in a slow moving grocery check out and looking at a rag mag.

Actually went over and checked (your fault) and he has him going to everyone but us,LOL .Think we hurt Eklund's feelings over the summer...ahhhh!

is price the next captain for the habs?

Only if Koivu plays here for another 5 years, and Markov, Higgins, Komi and Kovalev don't.

1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat
2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

captain markov? ya right.

Major building blocks for the future:Price, Komi, Patch, and the Kostitsyn brothers. We could use a #1 centre with a complete game and that type of player will be very difficult to find in a trade scenario because there are 29 other teams who could use that type of centre. Through the draft or free agency Gainey might be able to find the right fit. If Gainey really wanted more fire power (Gaborik) I think he could more easily and economically pick up Havlat. As for that elusive centre....what about adding Peter Forsberg in January?

Drive_For_25's picture

Add Forsberg in January, lose him in February. Nuff said.

Put your pipes down about Gaborik... we're only $115k under the cap as of right now (this number includes Carle and Bouillon on the IR, who count in full against the cap). We couldn't even call Weber back up without sending Chipchura down right now. Trading for Gaborik would be impossible wihtout them taking back, at bare minimum, Kovalev AND Higgins in terms of salary.

In short, your Montreal Canadiens are currently not in a position to take on salary. And, it is imperative that at least 20 of the 25 players still with the team remain healthy for Friday and Saturday's games.

If Carle can be sent down (which I'm not sure if he can because its a concussion) then that frees up room for a callup. But like I said, I'm not sure if he can be sent down while still suffering from a concussion. He might need to get cleared to play by NHL doctors before he can be officially sent down.

Les-Habitants's picture

When a player is placed on IR, that player no longer counts towards the cap or towards the NHL 23 man roster limit...I'm pretty that's the case...which is why Chipchura is still here.

So, I think we're well under the cap right now...Cube's 1.8 mil doesn't count against the cap until he's re-activated off of injury reserve. When he's taken off IR, Chip and his 900k salary will be sent down so the team doesn't go over the 23 man limit.

At that point we'll have about 2.008 mil in cap space, give or take.

Carle cannot be sent down until he is medically cleared, but that doesn't affect the team's cap or roster situation as he is on IR. Carle will be paid his NHL-level salary until medically cleared, at which point he'll be assigned to Hamilton.

As for who will be playing, it appears all our forwards except for Laraque are healthy and thus we'll probably see the same lines that were in the game against the Wild.

On D, Breezer will take Cube's spot. If OB can't play, and from all reports he seems to be fine, Dandy will take his spot.
Chipchura has been kept in Montreal since we face 3 games in 4 nights (or 4 games in 6 nights) to start the season. He'll see some ice time as a means of throwing in some fresh legs.

No ,injured reserve does count against the Cap.There is a special category in which a team can petition the commish, if a player will be out an extended period of time due to injury or illness,to declare that player "unfit".This cannot take effect until after 24 days or 10 NHL games have passed since injury or illness start. There are other conditions but main points and his salary counts against the cap during that waiting period.

You are right concerning the 23-man roster.
