Canucks put Kyle Wellwood on waivers - That didn't take long, did it? - But the cruelest insult of all came in this CBC release : Never the most toned player even at full health - Check out the picture and article .. Two Line Pass ..... http://thetwolinepass.com/?p=845

Thats too funny...my buddy has a leaf wellwood jersey. When i bought my Lats jersey he would make fun of me, Lattendresse sucks! haha...now who sucks...stupid leaf fans. I need new friends.

Oh my GAWD, this is the best news ever. A friend of mine thinks Swellwood is the player of the FUTURE, always goes on about what a short stick he got in hogtown. Wah wah. Welcome to the waiver wire, Brando.

When I read Carbonneau quoted in the Gazette about Lapierre...: "As for Lapierre, Carbonneau talked to him about slowing down. "I need him to be more than a guy who runs around after the puck," said Carbonneau. "If he wants to be successful in this league, he has to learn to play with the puck at lower pace than 160 miles. I told him to relax a little bit." ...it tells me that Carbo wants Lapierre in the line-up and to do so he needs to better measure his effort when on the ice. Sounds like a former centerman telling a current one how to solidify his playing time to BETTER contribute to the team's success. Also, yesterday I watched a video of Carbo on Lats. Essentially he said that 1) he has great hands to score goals and 2) that 30 of his 32 goals were scored within 4 feet of the net. Carbo lauded lats preparation in the off-season to be ready for the start of the current season. If I heard correctly elsewhere, Lats had 8 hits in the Boston game with a total of 12 in his first 4 games. Sounds like a pretty good ave so far. Obviously, both players are making signficant contributions and the coaching staff know and knew all along what they were doing from the get-go. Last year, Lapierre was sent down and Lats sat out at the end of the season and in the playoffs. I say good for them for embarking this season with a better preparation/attitude BECAUSE it is good for the team. I hope all players who aspire to play for or remain with the big team adopt the same attitude. Georges D.

I don't understand why Savard got fired yesterday. If he wasn't their man of confidence, why not simply replace him before training camp? What exactly is the point of letting him start the season and coach a few games and then suddenly give up on him? After a win at that? Now you have another coach that needs to pick up and go, on the spot, which isn't exactly ideal. This isn't fair to Savard, to the fans and to the players. Chicago is well known for having spotty management and like history, it repeats itself. They should have known better.

New regime, maybe he wanted a more experienced coach, coaches simply don't last too long in one place in this business, and you can't get 20 new players if you simply want to change your luck or send a new message.

Maybe Carbo is maturing as a coach: As for Lapierre, Carbonneau talked to him about slowing down. "I need him to be more than a guy who runs around after the puck," Carbonneau said. "If he wants to be successful in this league, he has to learn to play with the puck at a lower pace than 160 mph. I told him to relax a little bit." Like I have been posting, more isn't always better. He did have a great game on the PK where his reckless approach is more effective than on 5 v 5 .

Sure, he should learn, but can he? I hope Carbo doesn't think that Lappy is as talented in handling the puck as Kovalev. There are limitations to everyone's talent and I think Lapierre's end at about third line (at best).

Correct, 3rd or fourth line, no offensive prowess has been exhibited by this player so far as a HAB. Limited passing ability as well. The reality is there are plenty of NHL'rs who are not puck possession players but who contribute in other ways to their team.

JIMVINNY's picture
So Carcillo is suspended, and won't be playing in the game saturday night. Does BGL sit now?

Harani's picture
Higgins starts on the third line (RDS) http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/261795.html Lats hangs on the 2nd line...

I'm really glad to read that but i will not get to excited cuz as soon as one of those lines has an average game he'll go back to the Higgy and Saku show that doesn't mesh.

Chorske's picture
That is a great idea. Lats has been playing the best hockey of his career as far as I'm concerned. He's gone a long way towards silencing his critics, especially in the second game of the season. Higgins is coming back from an injury, start him off slowly. PLUS: that third line is now looking pretty friggin KILLER to me. It's likely to be as much of a threat as the top two lines. I really liked Lang when we picked him up- I like him even more as a Hab.

With Phoenix coming here on Saturday I can't help but look at them as the Canadiens a year ago. Young Team, Loads of Talent, Lots of Questions but tons of drive and energy. They have all the pieces to surprise like Montreal did last year. Agree/disagree?

cautiousoptimist's picture
I don't know much about the Coyotes, but I'd say the Blackhawks could be this year's equivalent to our boys last season. An original six team with tons of talent, good vets (Havlat, Campbell, Sopel), outstanding prospects (Toews, Kane, Sharp, Seabrook), Huet in net, Khabibulin as UFA trade bait at the deadline, and now a new coach to impress. This isn't an excellent team yet, but it will be. 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

I don't think phoenix has as much talent as mtl... especially at the veteran level. And personally I do not believe in gretzky's abilities as a coach. But i see where you're coming from. Perhaps in a couple of years with proper management they can be a force. Should be an interesting game on saturday regardless. Maybe Shane Doan will make sure he swears en francais this time.

DMAN's picture
I can't speak for you, but alot of people on here did not believe in Carbo before last year. I think Gretzky has progressed nicely as a coach and will be a coach for many years in the NHL. That is if he doesn't move to the Gm's seat at some time. I agree about the veteran presence though. Maybe if they do well enough they will trade for some at the deadline. As far as talent in projection terms Phoenix is very deep especially at forward. But you are right, probably not as deep as Montreal.

I liked the piece about the team being dissatisfied after the win over Boston. They are clearly aware that they have to break the pattern of sitting on a lead. They have to continue to be aggressive and forecheck hard. The article also said Carbo is working with them on puck protection and one-on-one situations with or without the puck. Hopefully there will be fewer games this year in which they take a comfortable lead, sit back, lose it and eventually lose the game. The three worst which come to mind from last year are the 5-4 overtime loss to Nashville and the game against the Rangers in which they blew a 3-0 lead and lost 5-3; and of course the last game against the Flyers, which they had no business losing. Pittsburgh did it last night, losing 4-3 after leading 3-0. When we get a lead, we have to know how to hang onto it. If we can do that, it'll be a big improvement over last season.

I expect we'll see Higgins start out on the Lang/SK74 line (I won't call it the 3rd line, it just doesn't seem right), to see if Lats can continue his roll on the Koivu/Tanguay line. I imagine if he falters, the swap will come quickly, but Lats really seems to thrive on being on a line with Koivu. __________ For anyone interested, there is an awesome hockey card show at Centre Pierre Charbonneau in Montreal Oct 24, 25, 26 (the weekend of the HIO summit). I have no affiliation with it, but I'll be there, as will Carey Price, Andrei & Sergei Kostitsyn and more!

It's good to see BGL is clearly on track to continue his integration into the team. I am happy the rumour I read here about a friend of Dr. Mulder saying he was seriously injured, has proved to be false. It's especially good he will be around for tomorrow's game. I am sure he was rushed into the lineup as much to prepare for Phoenix as he was to deal with Shawn Thorton.

The National Post says: "The Montreal Canadiens on Thursday assigned center Kyle Chipchura to Hamilton of the American Hockey League. Drafted 18th overall in 2004, Chipchura was a healthy scratch for Montreal's first four games this season. The 22-year-old native of Alberta recorded one goal in four preseason contests. The 6-2, 204-pound Chipchura made his NHL debut last season, registering four goals and seven assists in 36 games with the Canadiens." 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Poignant line from ESPN's power rankings: "although the Habs are 3-0-1, they've given up leads in three out of the four matchups. That can't become a regularity if Montreal dreams of a Cup." 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

saskhab's picture
It'd be relevant if it were accurate. We had a 1-0 lead vs. Buffalo 3 minutes in, it's not like we really gave up anything there considering the game was tied for about 55 minutes total. We beat Toronto handily and quickly. Same thing happened in Philly as vs. Buffalo, we scored first and didn't hold it. That's not a major issue. We even came back from 2 goals down vs. Philly for a win. Losing 1 goal leads early in games is not an issue that a team has to correct or worry about. Losing leads like vs. Boston is the only one worth any concern.

Mike Boone's picture
By "poignant" do you mean "pertinent" or "prescient"?

cautiousoptimist's picture
I meant "pertinent" -- and I certainly hope it's not prescient. Our players' and prospects' potential is palpable, but if these poor performances are a precursor to playoff play, we may soon perceive the pungent perfume of defeat. (I couldn't find another word for "defeat" that starts with P...) 1. www.flickeringpictures.com - not a hockey site, but still kinda neat 2. Josh Gorges on Montreal's attack: "They're comin', they're comin' and they keep comin'. Just line after line, wave after wave..."

twocents's picture
I don't know, I was nearly moved to tears.

HAB-PROFESSOR's picture
its not prescient as Breeze and Dandy will soon be replaced by Cube and PAX...those are the variables they fail to grasp.

Pax will not come to Montreal to play on the 4th line. "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Go Habs Go!! Habsrule

To get it right. Read Pierre Lebrun at http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/columns/story?columnist=lebrun_pierre&id=3.... Bowman was involved from the beginning obviously. Savard was never regarded more than as a 'junior' coach with not enough experience and capacity to compete. My only question is whether Quenneville is competent enough to deal with two starting goalies judging from the manner he mismanaged his goalie system in Colorado. Wonder if HE was competent then, how about now? GD
