Giant killers

The Stanley Cup champion had lost two games in regulation since the beginning of the season.

Make that three.

The Canadiens played textbook hockey for 40 minutes and hung on down the stretch to beat Detroit 3-1. Goals by Maxim Lapierre, Tomas Plekanec and Chris Higgins.

Johan Franzen undressed Ryan O'Byrne – who'd been great – to spoil Carey Price's shutout bid.

Price made 15 saves in the third period, 32 on the game for his 10th win of the season.

Great team effort.

No passengers on the bus.

Analysis by e-mail:

From my man, Pierre McGuire: Smart game plan. Took the speed out of the Wings game. Made it a tough game to play for the skill guys. Kostopoulos matters a ton. Make Koivu and Higgins play bigger.

Demers says:

Don't try to shut things down. Keep up the passion and intensity. No penalties. Bouchard says make sure the third man isn't caught deep.

3P 20:00:

Can the boys pull this off? It might be a season-saver

Stats:

Pleks and Higgins: four shots each ... Holding Detroit to 17 through 40 minutes is something ... Canadiens five giveaways, Detroit eight

Babcock plays Zetterberg against Lang

1P 19:30:

1P 19:59:

Hey, it's still a tie game

RDS vs. TSN:

I'm stickin' with my homeboys

Jacques Demers:

Compares Markov unfavourably to Lidstrom. Joël Bouchard says the O'byrne debacle can be a unifying factor for the team, which has played with so little emotion this season

Benoit Brunet:

Heaps praise on Saku Koivu and Andrei Markov; worries about the PP. Him and everyone else.

A W?:

Possible, if everyone in uniform minds his knitting and plays his ass off. Based on what we've seen to date ...

Footnote to Patrick Roy Night:

On his way in, Roy passed the seat that was occupied by Ronald Corey on that fateful night. This time, the person sitting there was Jean Beliveau

The outdoor game in Edmonton:

Red Fisher is still recovering from that one.

The last time Canadiens beat Detroit ...:

Andreas Dackell scored.

Chantal:

The boys are crackin' her up tonight.

Joël Bouchard:

Says Canadiens have to be very conscious of D because Detroit's transition game, with those puck-moving defencemen, is a killer. They're defence-to-offence, up the ice and threatening in a heartbeat

No Gui!:

Still nursing a bad shoulder

Lidstrom:

Best European NHLer ever? Could be. Checks nobody. Nobody checks him. Controls the game every time he's on the ice. Approaching 40 and as good as ever.

Wow!:

Wings have EIGHT STRAIGHT SEASONS of 100 points or better

Carbo on RDS:

Looking a tad testy

Contract years:

Impending FAs: Johan Franzen, 9 goals in 15 games; Alex Kovalev, 5 in 20, Tomas Plekanec, 4 in 20; Christopher Higgins, 4 in 14

Best 1-2 defence pairing in the league:

Lidstrom and Rafalski. No one else is close

Pierre McGuire told Melnick:

that Ryan O'Byrne is primed for a big game. A lot of support from teammates.

Ty Conklin:

to start

Cool stats:

Some  unusual and interesting analyses, compiled by Daniel St. Amand of La Presse. Example: Goals Against per 60 minutes played: Tom Kostopoulos leads the team with 1.23. At the other end of the table, Mike Komisarek: 3.86 GA per 60 minutes played.

Detroit just returned from a 3 game road trip in the west. They didn't have that usual extra drive to counter our Habs last night. We had more room in the Wings' zone too that other teams usually clog up. It was an important win, but not a defining win. Putting several of these games together consistently will define what is possible for the playoffs. We are still not designed completely yet for very deep in the playoffs. I really liked the grit & hustle, the fore & backchecking combined with the skill that we definitely have is the only way we will win consistently. Price would be even better if he did not go so low when in his butterfly. The book is to go high on Price. He flops to sit on his haunches, costing him 12 " of vulnerable vertical space. That was the first game in a long time where an effective strategic game plan was obvious from Carbonneau. The team, and Carbonneau, coming to the defence of O'Byrne was also inspiring and great to see. It showed TEAM character, and hopefully will be a catalyst to realise what has been obviously missing; character, chemistry and a backbone.

Hi guys!new reader here, just found out about this site,I can finally read some positive on the Habs. I really like to read the feed backs after the games.I can practice my english at the same time.Even underline my spelling mistakes, that's cool. About tonight's game.Probably the best effort of the season, felt like they were playing together, like they had a game plan.Maybe a bit early but this could be a turning point, tonight proved to the players that this system works against the best of them. Now imagine when our pp will kick in.I would try AK46 at the right point.but that's just me. Now bring on the Caps and OV,since our team seems to be a bit cameleon ,this will be another very exciting game for us to enjoy. And i love a week end like the one coming ,Friday a game and Saturday another game and I'm going to bell center on Sunday to see the bulldogs.(think i wont get to see D'agostini because of Tanguay's injury). So I'm glad I found this site, and I will come and read your comments after most games, and come on guys, like would say our dear friend Jaques Demers "You have to stay (coughing) positive ".I think we have a special team this year, and I feel very good about this win.Go Habs GO

Habsrule1's picture
Welcome Bowser.....couldn't agree more. There are alot of negative nellies here, but don't let them bring you down. I tend to be very positive, but love the difference of opinions on the site. What I don't like is the name calling, usually reserved for Breezer, Lats, and the coach. Disagreeing is one thing. A total lack of respect for people who have devoted themselves to trying to do what's best for our Habs is another. But that's just my opinion. "I can't hear what Jeremy(Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy Go Habs Go!! Habsrule

Anybody notices a pattern? Lats plays on Koivu's line it plays great. Tom K plays on that line, it plays great. This line needs a banger. Not necessarily a scorer, but a bunger to create space. Habs played a great road game and i gotta give props to Carbonneau, this was a great game plan. Wings thrive on puck possession so this was a classic take the neautral zone away and force them to dump and chase.

Habsrule1's picture
Great post timo. I could not believe how TK seemed to fit right in on that line...I daresay he looked even better than Lats, who I thought was fine there too. It's the extra energy, and the crashing & banging that these guys need. I just wonder if Carbo finally got his message across, or changed his delivery cause we know he's been preaching defense first and chances will come, but this is the first time the team seemed to get that message....or I guess you can say they've slowly gotten it over the last 3 games or so. Well played, well coached, all around excellent effort. But does Kovalev seem a little hesitant? Is he possibly injured?

Didn't seem too hesitant to lay that hit on Zetteberg. But I agree with you... he still looks off.

The Teacher's picture
Hmm, not to toot my own horn, but I did say we were going to kick their asses about 1 hour before the game started. Great team effort.

Habbu's picture
Is there a seat still available on the bandwagon?

Weren't you mad as hell and not going to take it anymore? Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

I don't think Carbonneau will fix a winning lineup. Latendresse won't play Friday.

Best news I have heard all morning I hope he never plays for us again he is useless.....Drive for 25 in 100....

Norm0770's picture
Just went over to TSN to see if the standings were updated and the headline is: "Habs Snap slide; Steal Victory from Red Wings" Is it just me or does that insunuate the Wings badly outplayed the Habs?

Kaptain K's picture
did you hear them b4 the game... they were pretty much saying Habs will need a miracle to win, yesterday i said habs show up against Top teams so we can easily win... et i was right. And during one of the breaks some TSN guy (dont remember his name, dont care..usually watch RDS) was saying how its thumbs down for hab fans voting for only habs in the all-star game. SaD... its our 100 year annivesary..sorry if we have something to celebrate. and then he went on to say thumbs up to fletcher for singing all the guys he did..oh yeah cuz the laffs are doing SOO well..sorry instead of last they are 11th in the east... what a joke --- "Sometimes i wake up in the middle of the night just so i can hate the maple leafs some more" - Bradley Powell = LOLLLLL

Steiner's picture
It was Dave Hodge on Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down that was talking about the Habs fans voting. That irritated me to.

'Steal' victory? Are they kidding?

likehoy's picture
or whoever wrote that only saw the third period. or the red wings are the cream of the NHL so any win against them is a steal.

Good fight, good night. Call the silver engravers in the morning!

LongIslandHabsFan's picture
In an otherwise perfect game, there was one glaring coaching error. How couldn't Carbo put out O'Byrne in the last minute with that open net? He would have scored for sure.

I thought OB was benched after that turnover that led to the goal? Don't remember seeing him the rest of the game.

OB did not get a shift after the turnover that resulted in a Spezza/Souray type of goal.

He's ruined on that one. OB will never, ever shoot on an open net again. Why risk it?

LongIslandHabsFan's picture
But after being spun around by Franzen, O'Byrne might have become so disoriented that he'd actually shoot at the OPPOSING net.

The Teacher's picture
It was more a matter of the puck taking an awful bounce then anything Franzen did, although the shot on Price was a beaut! My suggested overtime format and other sports talk

RudeMood19's picture
Proves we can play with the best, now we gotta keep it up

Ian G Cobb's picture
I thought Brisbois played a great game tonight, to bad he gets little respect from the fans.

Other than that turnover I thought OByrne actually played a great game. Although I cringed everytime I saw him on the ice at the same time as Datsyuk or Zetteberg. But he did great tonight. Way to go Ryan!

Ron's picture
Your right on the Breezer's game tonight. He plays damn well when there are no idiots taking runs at him, he gets the best first pass out of the zone all night. Stick to stick. Great game by him. Too bad he cannot take the hard hitting.

Why is it that he is the only guy on D who can get it through from the point on the PP? What does he see that others don't? (And, yes, he does make that nice outlet pass!)

likehoy's picture
wooden stick...only explanation

JasonM's picture
Hasn't had any since he came back. While I agree with you.... tonight, he was completely overshadowed by the collective effort of the team. Wish this came sooner but hey, I'll take it.

I was surprised how this game was all about skill - almost no hitting at all.

We are having fun tonight. Couple of things, Dandenault and Tom the bomb played strong on the puck and they had a great game. As well as the whole team. Poor O'Byrne being mainly responsible for the last two goals scored against us, but I have to say he also had a good game. But he sure scares me to death as he progresses in this league. Carbo had the whole team on the same page tonight. Georges has arrived as a quality journeyman. Tanguey took a elbow to the head that the league better look at. I hate head shots from cowards or from anyone. Get them out of this game. The Big O in Washington had a hat trick in the first 22min. of the game tonight. We will have to keep on him tight every shift on Friday. We played as a team with a mission tonight, it was refreshing to see.

The Teacher's picture
Kostopoulos was a force to be reckoned with tonight. What a game he played, especially in period #1 where he was all over the place. Carbo sure did. No slackers tonight from what I saw. Was that really an elbow? Seemed like a good hit to me, although we have had disagreements in the past with hits. My suggested overtime format and other sports talk

t1tan5's picture
"Georges has arrived as a quality journeyman." Do you mean BGL? or Gorges? If you mean Gorges, I'm not sure I would call him a journeyman anymore. He has solidified his spot on the team.

LongIslandHabsFan's picture
The way Gorges has progressed I'm not missing Rivet anymore. Good trade, Bob.

cjad just reported tanguay just has a sore neck and will be back on friday, as should be latendresse

Shiloh's picture
I'm glad that Tanguay will be back. Maybe Gui should take a few more weeks to make sure he's 100% - or a few months.

Never sounds good to me..our team is too fast and too skilled and Gui has neither...The AHL is where he should be.

LongIslandHabsFan's picture
Who do you sit to make room for Gui? Dandy, Tom the Bomb, Begin and Laps all played great. We'll need that kind of effort aginst Ovechkin on Friday.

Ian G Cobb's picture
Be nice Shiloh, but I'm with you a little on this.

Shiloh's picture
I'll try to stay nice Ian, where Gui is concerned - but I sure like the team speed we had out there tonight.

It didn't look that bad. Just got his bell rung. The same thing happened to me on Monday night at pickup. God damn hospital pass! Looking on the bright side of it, I can still take a check at the age of 47!

Ian G Cobb's picture
Yeats, 47, I always thought you to be a lot taller than that.

The guy who nailed me was about six inches bigger. It's not all that bad to get tagged now and then. Your getting up shows that you are still alive.

third well played game in a row. i like the effort. I thought lang played a fantastic game. he set up obyrne and kots jr for two great chances and he had a few good shots as well. if the habs continue to skate like they have been this should be fun.

Like I said in my first post of the night. "The Habs will take those Paper Champions to school............ Great game! The only thing that sucked was "PRICEBERG" didn't get his shut out..... Damn O'Bryne... LOL..... It's ok Kid U have a lot to learn, but it will come, Hang in there.....

showey47's picture
Loved the effort tonight, probably the best puck support game i've seen all season. I wish the hell t.k. had hands to go with his work ethic. Poor obyrne, had a solid game until he got undressed by franzen. Huge win none the less. Did we just find our 4th dman in gorges?

twocents's picture
It's great that Gorges is playing so well, but it still would be nice to have another solid D come spring. Our top five, plus one more would be awesome. Protects us in the case of injury too. Still need more offense from the D too.

Well, a gratifying effort overall. Koivu, Kosto and Higgins put on a clinic on how to eat up seconds with two shifts in the third. O'B had a very good game and has much to be proud of, especially coming back with his head held high....let's not define tonight's victory with a focus on one mistake.

Does Theodore start on Friday?.. Id love to see Price vs Theo.

likehoy's picture
it'd be very likely price v.s. theo + johnson theo gets chased regularly.

G-Man's picture
Great game for the Habs. Everyone showed up. O'Byrne was outplayed once by an excellent Frantzen who's scored 10 times in his last 16 games. Otherwise, O'Byrne played solid. Gorges is rapidly becoming our #3 D with a bullet. Love his nastiness around the net. 2 ugly goals and 1 beauty. Ain't hockey great when you drive the f'n net? Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

doug's picture
Is Malkin better than Crosby? Outscoring him and has in the past. I find Crosby to be overrated. . . other opinions?

I agree, but Gary feels he needs a "face man" for the sport. JT has a really good piece on H is Not for Habs that you should check out Doug.

drive for 25's picture
i hate crosby. he is a pansy he gets very few blocked shots and very few hits malkin plays a physical game gets more points scores more goals Malkin is better, hands down

likehoy's picture
crosby's a more intense player, but malkin has the size of lecavalier. in a pinch like a game 7, i would take crosby...but in the long-run i like malkin. crosby was just overhyped as a junior player all because of gretzky...pavel pure should have hyped ovechkin.

Ali's picture
HEY! you just woke up from the Matrix and can see the world clearly again. Ovechkin and Malkin both, I would take on my team before Crosby.

I'd build a team around Crosby before Malkin if I had the choice. Crosby less 1 dimensional.

Mr.Hazard's picture
Not to discount your view, which is valid, but: Malkin is a beast. Top scorer in league right now (ahead of Crosby), took over the lead last season after Crosby went down. Ex nihilo nihil fit

t1tan5's picture
Crosby is less good.

RH's picture
WOW! What a game. I'm drenched with sweat and I have no nails left. O'Byrne......solid effort. Although, I'm not sure why he's not able to use that long reach of his more effectively. He was doing quite fine at the beginning of the season. Need to keep this up against OV. He's getting hotter, with a hat trick tonight.

Bettr he got the trick tonight and not Friday.

likehoy's picture
i missed the first two periods but i've gotta say it's nice to pick up the W. confidence boost! we're going to win 5 straight. so realistically...right now we're letting OB off the hook cause we won the game...but that was another ridiculously poor play from the guy. He should have nothing to cheer about...if I were O'Byrne I'd go home and give myself a hard look in the mirror and figure out what I'm doing wrong (which is panicking under pressure) and work towards stopping it.

One reason the poor slob is panicking is because the Bell Centre fans are all over him when he makes a mistake. If this game had been in Montreal, would the faithful have been chanting "O'Byrne" mockingly after he got undressed by Franzen? How does that help a young player develop? And who wants to come here if the fans can turn against you so swiftly? If I'm Carbo, I'm going to focus on all of the good plays he made including those smart outlet passes. Let him know that I still believe he has a future. For Pete's sake, the guy has played 51 career cames. Gorges has played 186. That's more than 3 and 1/2 times as much experience - and Gorges is still considered a young player developing. It's one thing to want to play in a hockey mad environment. It's another to want to play in an insane environment. Montreal qualifies. _____________________________________ "Deserves" got nothin' to do with it.
