Worst of the season?

posted by Mike Boone at 13h41 EST on Feb 9

A total butt-kicking.

6-2.

41 shots on Jaroslav Halak, who deserved beter.

Two shorthanded goals by the Flames.

Canadiens PP was 0-for-4.

Not a great way to start the season's longest road trip.

3P 1:10:

That shot of the bench says it all

3P 2:30:

What would the score be if Iginla had a big game?

3P 3:40:

Wnning hockey: up 6-2, Dustin Boyd finishes his check on Hamrlik

3P 5:00:

5-on-3 and who's on Kiprusoff? Koivu. Brutal.

3P 6:00:

6-2 and Kovy's throwing moves. Second wave of the PP: Lapierre, Laraque, TtB

3P 6:45:

Why hold Laraque's stick?

3P 7:40:

40 shots ... and seven minutes left

3P 8:09:

hey, haven't allowed six in a while

3P 9:00:

No life on the bench. No life on the ice. They've packed it in.

3P 9:55:

Glum-looking CH jerseys in the crowd

3P Break:

So depressing. And they're running out of ideas ... and excuses

3P 13:03:

Lombardi beats Plekanec down the boards and no one covers Bourque.

Five goals allowed ... again

3P Break:

Did they win the first five minutes? The penalty didn't help.

3P 14:00:

First shift for Sergei, with Koivu and Higgins

3P 15:00:

Lapierre with the kids. Sergei seems to be benched

3P 16:00:

Halak makes a great poke-check on the PK. He is BLAMELESS tonight

BGL giving Franckie som fighting tips?

3P 18:00:

Higgins, lapierre and TtB

3P 19;00:

Am I having an acid flashback hallucination or did Plekanec just forecheck a defenceman?

3P 20:00:

Saku with the kids

Demers says:

Win the first five minutes of the third period. Then win the second five minutes ...

Joël Bouchard's chalk talk:

Lack of communication produces turnovers. And Demers says guys just won't pay the price. Pleks, AK46, Sergei, Kovalev ...

2P 00:00:

Horrible

2P 1:17:

Markov. Brutal.

Boyd 4-2

2P 1:50:

Huge save on AK46

2P Break:

Kovy sold that nicely. Big PP here. Think Sergei will be on the point?

2P 3:00:

2P 5:00:

Another shift when they couldn't get out

2P 6:20:

Pleks wasn't going to win that puck battle with Giordano

2P 6:45:

Koivu, Higgins and Kostopoulos?

2P Break:

Pleks had a littl;e brain cramp on the PK, but no harm done

2P 19:00:

Great PK so far

2P 20:00:

Shorthanded to start. If they can ride this out ... Halak will have to be good, which he has been so far.

Puck support:

That's what Demers is preaching.

Zach Parise:

32 goals. And Clemmensen gets a shutout. The Rangers blow.

The Brothers K:

Dressed tonight?

1P 00:00:

Period ends with some nastiness. What was Bourque so excited about? Not a dirty hit.

1P 1:19:

Kovalev!!!

He makes me crazy.

2-1

1P 1:40:

Halak looks really sharp

1P 2:15:

Good pinch by O'Byrne leads to pressure on Kipper and the first penalties.

1P 3:00:

Did Markov think a 60-foot cross-ice pass to a stationary Kovalev was going to work?

1P 3:27:

Four shots in 15 minutes isn't going to do it

1P 5:32:

1P 10:00:

Shots are 5-1

1P 11:02:

"Laraque en plein acceleration." Please.

1P 12;18:

Too many turnovers!! Brutal.

1P 12:40:

Pleks line pinned.

1P Break:

Tough shift for Koivu line. Couldn't get out of their end against tough forecheck..

1P 14:30:

RDS guys like Halak's last save, through traffic.

1P 15:00:

Love that Max-Pac. What a battler

1P 16:40:

Great chance for Higgins. Didn't score

Canadiens will have a tough time tonight. Games Friday and Saturday, practice and travel Sunday, playing at altitude tonight. He expects them to be better in Edmonton on Wednesday. slide will stop when the keepers steal a few games. that would restore some level of confidence in players and make it a little easier to come to work. i can only see this happening when Price returns he has the ability to shut the door regardless of how he is played recently. a coaching change, i can't see anybody else other then BG in the short term (rest of year). does BG want to get into the coaching carousel again probably not.seems to me we fire coachs and they move on and have great seasons elsewhere.should this not stop. trades..the other GMS are licking there chops and sharpening the knives. be prepared for them to rip us part if we do this. they know what is going on. we are in a very weak position on this front.that is reality. reality is the team works its way out (with some trades maybe)by itself. we will have alot of cap space in the summer and gainey will be forced to do something as alot of players will not be back. thats my 3 cents. dp

Going through a rough patch? Is your team on a losing streak? Haven't scored any power play goals lately? Need to bump up your shorthanded goals stats? The Habs are your cure for what ails you. Here is a testimonial: "You know, things were looking pretty grim for the past week, so I decided to give the Habs a try. What can I say? The results speak for themselves."- Mike Keenan. Remember the Habs, folks. The cure for what ails your hockey team.* *As always, consult a physician before undergoing treatment. Habs may cause drowsiness and irritability across the country. Do not operate heavy machinery after use.* Gilbert 2008/09 may not be the season of the Habs

This is a comment on Hab fans + HIO: the most comments are ALWAYS after the Habs lose. Are the fans a glutton for punishment or do we have to trade the team and fire management after every loss? Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

That's not all that strange. National Review, the Conservative/Republican magazine down here in the States, is always more meaty and entertaining when they are out of power.

I wonder how the team would respond if, instead of everyone hating on them all the time, we were all encouraging?

Montrealer2's picture
wow ........they are toast unless they pull off a real super effort ,for the rest of this road trip,& the year,....EXCUSE after EXCUSE... I don't think Gainey is the problem, but we certainly have some concerns about Carbo now,...I like Carbo & think that somehow it's not entirely his fault, but something is wrong & something needs to be done right now..... A Huge Trade, & maybe BG comes back behind the bench, with Carbo to see what the hell's really going on,....

Got my picture up buddy. Thanks again.

Only 2 games on the tube tonight... they need something to talk about.

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
yup - i don't expect much from Gainey regarding trades anyway.

Carbonneau looked sad during press conference... almost made me feel sorry for him (NOT!!!). They can talk in the dressing room, talk to the media, talk to each other in the shower, it doesn't matter and nobody gives a *** about their talking. Talk on the ice and win some games, for F sakes. Enough talking. I can't believe they are making all this ridiculous amount of money and don't have a shred of descency to even work hard for it. Disgrace!

You've got as much faith as a Leafs fan... "in sickness and in health..."? Oh wait...

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
Carbo spoke to the press? what did he say? i missed it.

Basically that they are afraid to play, and that it's bad. Dave Stubbs just posted a new article and quotes are there. But basically Carbonneau said nothing constructive as usual... and what can he say?

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
he can't say much - he doesn't have answers and it shows on the ice.

G-Man's picture
From your comments, you'd think it was the coaches on the ice. IT's the players. No heat, no leadership, no guts. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

BoomBoomMax's picture
CARBONNEAU IS NOT A BAD COACH! You folks have a really bad memory or something! He was the runner-up to the Jack Adams Trophy a year ago and you all want to fire him... This non-sense has to stop! So the team is going through a rough patch, we all know this! Tonight was a series of unfortunate events and yes, the moral of the troupes went from pretty good to "We're on the verge of disaster" within 32 seconds... But that's life!!! It happens at your work, in your relationships, on the golf course with your friends, etc! GAINEY HAS PUT TOGETHER A STANLEY CUP TEAM BACK IN DALLAS! He will do the RIGHT THING FOR THE TEAM and its future and you folks should quit it with the trade demands because THAT'S A BIG PART WHY OUR YOUNG PLAYERS (HIGGINS, PLEX, PRICE, HALAK, ETC) ARE STRUGGLING AND NO ONE WANTS TO PLAY HERE!!! Everyone talks out of their A$$E$!!!

Exit716's picture
Boom. Big difference between Dallas and Montreal. Gainey had Modano and Nieuwendyk as centres. Was able to sign REAL free agents like Hull and Belfour. Doesn't have any of that in Montreal. And if you think about it, the Cup win was tainted by the Hull foot in the crease goal that never should have counted. Tell me how he is going to give us a Cup with a team led by midgets at centre and Z list free agent acquisitions? Oh well, he can always get Red Fisher to tell us about the day Bob shovelled his own driveway in Montreal.

G-Man's picture
Speak, oh Toothless One. Gilbert 2008/09 is the season of the Habs

"Fire Carbo!" Who will replace him? Didn't we already do this with the previous three coaches? Is the coach to blame for all of the mental mistakes this team is making right now? Isn't Carbo the same coach who was behind the bench when the Canadiens had the #1 P.P. in the league? This team needs one thing right now...a few wins! I have never seen a team with such a low confidence level. They are really fighting every play right now! Goals are getting harder to score, saves are harder to make, and the P.P. personnel is moving the puck slowly and carelessly. I really though that Halak was in a great position tonight to steal the game and give the team what it needed to break-out but, two key unforced errors killed it! Confidence and the mental part of the game accounts for about 75% of a winning formula. They are hurting in this department! A coach can only do so much, juggle lines and line-ups, change the starting goaltender, and simplify the game plan. It is up to the players to execute. They are trying too hard as individuals and are playing outside of their limitations. This is why players like Kostopoulos, Lapierre, and Begin look good right now. They are simply playing their game. No pressure to score or carry the team. Markov and Komisarek have looked awful during this stretch because they are trying to do too much. These were the same two guys that we were all saying were the best pairing in the league. They still are a great pairing but, they need to stop thinking the game so much and just let their instincts take over. This is why Gainey is patient, he knows that the team will break-out of this slump. Why should he make a decision under these circumstances? I predict a big Habs win in Edmonton and we will see this team turn it around on the rest of this road trip!

BoomBoomMax's picture
Maybe they will turn it around and even if they don't, I still agree with you! These "Habs Fans" are going to kill the Franchise with their ridicule demands and contradictions!!! Let the Coaches and GM do their job, if you don't like it, some other fans will take your place and appreciate their knowledge and work!

WestHab's picture
Why did they get rid of Claude Julien? It was no where near this bad, we had less talent then. The goaltneding was shakey at the time that was it. We weren't giving up two Shorthanded goals in a game that's for sure. The coach is respondsible of taking individulas and moulding then into a team. I don't have that kind of skill, and I don't think Carbo has it, not now. ------------------------------------------- "We have them just where we want'em."

Oh yes it was! It was almost the exact same scenario...how soon we forget except we were fighting for our playoff lives. Carbo is a great coach for this organization. He has learned from some of the best, Gainey, Hitchcock, Pat Burns, Robinson, and Demers. He can handle the media pressure. The man is a winner. His approach with Kovy two seasons ago was wrong so he was smart enough to change it and last year Kovy had a career year. I've said before and will continue to say it, the players play the games and when you make mental mistakes in every facet of the game (shorthanded goals allowed, soft goals, unforced giveaways, missed opportunities) you cannot blame the coach! To me the coach is to blame when he refuses to change the starting goaltender, stops experimenting with the lines and line-ups, and gives up on any new ideas. He cannot execute the P.P. or battle in the corner or stop a puck from just inside the blueline. If we go back the last few games I am sure you will see my point.

Ok so now I think we have reached the bottom. So do we win our next three games against Edmonton, Colorado and Vancouver. Does Dandie play next game, does Price get the next start. How fragile is this team. Do they bounce back and show a little pride or do they continue this downward spiral. I have no comment on the game. I think enough has been said already. Good night.

Does anybody know the official address of the CH? I would like to write them a letter. Nice polite one, mind you.

The entire coaching staff must go. There's some deep doo going on now for quite a long time. Even games that the Habs won this year - many of those wins were undeserving. This team needs a no - nonsense approach of a coach. And who in their right minds rolls all four lines every game in the dying minutes and in other situations? How do one earn "playing minutes" when the coach doles out equal minutes to all four lines? Guy Carbonneau hasn't a clue on how to motivate this team and he certainly doesn't have any coaching skills whatsoever.

Kind of interesting, Micheal Farber of Sports Illustrated wrote an article on the NHL's struggling goalies and of course Price was included. The Interesting part was that he implied that their are rumbles(I'm guessing with people involved with the team) that Price's practice habits are leaving alot to be desired. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/michael_farber/02/09/goalt... http://5-10andagamemisconduct.blogspot.com/

So nothing from the dressing room? These guys must have snuck out throught he back door and hit the French Maid by now. After all, there is no point to dwell on just another loss.

Habbu's picture
I hope there were some fist fights; cause some of them need a good beating...one they will remember for awhile. In fact maybe that's what they need to bring them together...a good old fashioned bench clearing brawl...with police, fans, chairs, tear gas all over the ice...a few players hauled off to jail to face assault charges in the morning...Carbo fined 10 grand...

I can probably guess it word by word.

RiverviewCanadien's picture

don't bother with this guy - not worth it.

Habbu's picture
How about they bring up the Bulldogs to finish out the year? Apparently they show no fear and actually work hard. Or have Lever come up and have Carbo take a leave of absence.

Cape Breton's picture
A very easy team to play against, our Habs are. Just go on the aggressive and Les Boys will cave in. A pretty simple game plan, and the entire NHL knows it. Sad, Sad, Sad.

Habbu's picture
ya nailed it...the Bruins and the Flyers showed them all how it can be done last spring.

A lot of players are earning their walking papers. It's just too bad that they had to diminish their trade value like that. We all knew we weren't really contenders this year, but a lot of the pieces (Price, Max-pac, D'ags, Lapierre, Gorges) are here. That's a killer group if we can add a real stud (***cough, rhymes with Decavalier***). Komi is playing himself out of that 5 million dollar/year contract we all thought he was sure to get, but he's still part of the solution.

The problem with this team is, drum roll please....COACHING. I am not saying it is entirely Carbo's fault. Of course not. However, it seems like I am watching other teams have these great systems that players are buying into, and we continually look like we have no plan out there. That includes, in no small way, our putrid power-play. It has gotten so bad that we should decline penalties. Is it Carbo's fault? Is it the players' fault that won't sacrifice on every shift? All I know is that we really need something to shake this team up. A trade? Maybe. A coaching change? Not likely. A coach coming up with a game-plan and a bunch of overpaid players following the plan? ummmm....

When is Tanguay suppose to return? it would be interesting to see carbo put koivu and kovy together with someone like pacs. Maybe kovy will finally try so he can prove hes better then koivu... were in trouble...

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
Kovy has more pure talent - yes. disinterest, laziness, heartless play puts him far below Koivu, no matter who accumulates more points.

RiverviewCanadien's picture
You really have to start playing a different card other than the hard work ethic. that is just BS, you honestly think he goes out there and trys to suck on purpose!!! You think he wants to just retire after this year, open your eyes...

RiverviewCanadien's picture
I would actually love that, how about they put some bums with Koivu first and see how he does then, give Kovy and Pleks Pacioretty, I feel Pleks and Kovy were geling well tonight and the Kostitsyns were...I don't know where they were I only noticed Sergei give the puck up.

RiverviewCanadien's picture
-This team is better off without Koivu, they have already proved that. This team is not getting any better under his guidance and that should change. -They are better off without Higgins, they have already proved that. He cannot finish, thank to D'Ags great shot, he got a point. -They are better off without Price for a while (ride the pine my boy). Halak proved once again he is a great goalie and should be the number 1...Price has done nothing people except cry when he loses. -They are better off without Komi. He is a big dead weight on the ice that makes a good move once in a blue moon (he made one great play tonight) -They are better off without Carbo. He couldn't coach the Red Wings against a series with a team from the juniors.

RiverviewCanadien's picture
You guys come on here are trash talk Kovy and have nothing to back it up with. Check the stats guys, if it was not for him...oh man I don't even want to think about where this team would be right now.

TheMock780's picture
They are better off without Kovy. When your most talented player by a mile has taken an entire month off(minus the all-star game) and pretty well decides turns off and on the effort whenever he feels like it, you aren't going to win. http://5-10andagamemisconduct.blogspot.com/

RiverviewCanadien's picture

TheMock780's picture
Hey I won't argue with the fact that the team has really turned up the suck since the injured players have come back. I think Price came back to early just so he could make his all-star start. Koivu looks plain physically weak out there, the injuries have taken their toll with him but he still tries. Higgins is just plain soft and couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. But Kovalev has no excuses for not trying out there and he clearly isn't trying outside of his all-star appearance http://5-10andagamemisconduct.blogspot.com/

Gr8stFranchizEvr's picture
Mock, don't bother with this guy - no matter what you say, he's blinded by his "Kovalove"!

RiverviewCanadien's picture
I honestly believe he is trying out there, he is STILL geting points so he must be doing something. I think it has alot to do with the other players, he and Pleks seem to be geling, AK46 not so much, I would like to see Pacioretty play with Kovy again.

Gary320's picture
There was a team meeting apparently. Since the team is supposed to let in the media after 10 minutes, but let them in after 30 minutes instead (RDS)

Habbu's picture
Where's the pride? An organization celebrating 100 years of hockey and these guys show no committment at all. Something went missing in the playoffs last spring and it has never come back. A prediction - BG will be back behind the bench within 2 weeks to try and salvage something out of this gigantic mess. Another prediction - the press conference at post season will start with something like - "Obviously we are very disappointed by the results of our 2008 2009 season". And thus begins another 5 year re-building project....

Chuck's picture
This is essentially the same team that started the season 8-1-1, so we know that they have the talent to do it. Now they've got to put in the hard work needed to right the ship.

I wish we had signed Claude Lemieux. He can't be any worse than Sergei or half the other forwards and he wouldn't put up with this heartless play.

It would be nice if HabsI/O would install a general IQ test while creating a login name. Then we might be lucky enough to miss out on posts like this.

He's not my boy. I criticize Carbo as much as I criticize Kovy, but I don't sound quite as stupid as you when I do it.

Right so the guys who actually lace up the skates and go out on the ice harbour absolutely none of the blame for this mess? Come on http://5-10andagamemisconduct.blogspot.com/

I'm not saying Carbo shouldn't have some blame cause quite frankly everyone deserves blame for this mess. But I don't want the Habs to turn into the Ottawa Senators, firing coaches left right and centre. Every coach deserves at least one major roster move to try and turn the team around. So at least dump Kovy and if then it doesn't work then we'll talk dumping Carbo http://5-10andagamemisconduct.blogspot.com/

-Right now there are too many aspects of the game that we are poor with. Not one player or line is weak. The whole thing is out of control. I don't like saying it but Carbo must go. I was very excited about him coaching here because I loved him as a player but that does not make him a good NHL coach. He has no respect from the Vets. Perhaps he should have been assigned to Hamilton a few years ago before taking this on. ------------------------------------------ "We have them just where we want'em."

Dump Koivu

It wasn't funny the first time, either.

The optimist in me says we played a bad game and that we're capable of better. The realist however counters with are we really that good a team? I don't think so anymore.

and the pesimist says.....

So did Carbonneau share his wisdom with the press yet? Did the press politely ask our great coach yet what is happening?
