3P 0046:
Perfect!
Kovy on the PP, from Pleks
4-0Â
3P 2:00:
Dare I suggest this is over?
3P 3:18:
We're up to 71 total shots ... and only three goals.
3P 4:42:
Another PP. I'm losing count. And Kovy on first wave.
3P 5:27:
35 saves. Huet's positioning is just great.
3P Break:
Huet 33 saves ... many of them sick!
3P 7:30:
Sergei playing the point withh Hamrlik on the second wave of the PP.
3P 9:00:
Ryder: The unKovalev
3P Break:
Another PP. Washongton is hanging on ... literally. And Kovalev, the old man, is flying through the third period.
3P 10:46:
Save puts an end to shaky defensive shift by Koivu lline. Not the best in their own end.
3P 12:00:
Haven't seen much of Brashear. Not that I'm complaining.
3P Break:
Caps have two shots tis period. Canadiens 6.
3P 14:00:
Shots are 30-30. Crazy.
3P 15:00:
Great puck control on the PP. But ffew shots.
3P 17:00:
Spectacularly hard-working shift by Chris Higgins. And another PP.
3P 19:00:
One forecheck, two back at the blueline, two D back and five red jerseys strung across the blueline when Caps have the puck.
3P 20:00:
Carbo must have told them to tighten this @#$%er up.
Between periods:
This might be Sergei K's best game. I hope the brothers get a shift together during the third period ... Kovalev is the God of the Bell Centre. The place comes alive every time he touches the puck ... Huet is on pace for 42 stops. Exciting, but not good.
2P 00:00:
Red light went on on a Canadiens' shot.
2P 2:11:
Huet's 27th save ... through a screen.
2P Break:
Christopher Higggins is bbatttling heroically on the PP tonight. That lline has been pretty good.
2P PP:
Sergei on the second wave. But no sustained pressure. 40 shots and counting.
2P 6:16:
Another PP. Delay of game again on Washington.
2P 9:00:
Kovy was icing hhis thumb, but he's back out. And that line is on fire.
Tough crowd:
They booed the Kiss Cam winners
2P Break:
Ages between whistles. Canadiens gettting odd man rushes as Caps open up even more. Shots are 23-19. That's a whole game in Florida or New Jersey.
2P 12:00:
Big hits this period.
2P 14:00:
Kovy is running a one-man Skills Competition
2P 16:00:
Huet: 21 honkin' saves!
2P 17:00:
Lovely set up of Lats by Sergei, whho gets bbetter and better.
2P 18:40:
My mman JG, big game tonight. And Ovechkkin jjust rattled one off the post.
Between periods:
Nyah-nyah! Our Russians are better than their Russians ... so far ... What a great skating and passing exhibbition. This is like the fourth period of the All-Star game ... Canadiens can't give up 15 shots in every period ... Canadiens have 16 hits, Washington 9 ... Max Lapierre is 3-0 on faceoffs, all other centres even ... Ovechkin played seven shifts, 8:14. What a horse!
00:00:
Huet's 15th save was a beauty.
1P 1:35:
Break up the Canadiens!
Begin skates it down, feeds Koivu in the slot
3-0Â
1P 2:30:
Huet clears the puck!
Huet clears the puck!Â
Caps PP:
After Sergei low-bridges Semin. And then Steve Bégin takes down Semin and it's a 5-on-3.
And then Pleks breaks away with Sergei for a spectacular one.
2-0
Wow! That's a highlight reel special.Â
1P 5:39:
I thinks Canadiens D looks for the cross-ice pass too often. And Markov is the only one who hits them on a consistent bbasis.
1P Break:
Huet gets run and his teammmates take umbrage. That happens a lot ... the running part, that is. Umbrage is hit-and-miss.
1P Break:
Huet: six stops, and lookin' good. Canadiens hhave 10 shots on Johnson, and a few good chances. Thatt Backstrom id can play.
First PP:
First wave falters a bit, then gains control and Mark Streit smokes one. Higgins may have distractted Johnson.
1-0Â
1P Break:
Great shift by the Smo line. Crowd eats it up. Then bbig pressure by KKovy and the game's first PP. Shots, which were 4-1 Caps, are 8-5 Canadiens.
1P 15:00:
Seeing-eye passes by Kovalev and Plekanec set up Hamrlik for hot shots.
1P 15:27:
A little Kovy magic on Jeff Schultz. Wonder if he gets up for Ovechkin.
1P 16:30:
Nicklas Backstrom is kiling Smolinski on faceoffs.
1P 17:00:
Ryder on the Koivu line. I thought it would be Sergei.
1P 18:00:
"Ovechkin is the most exciting player since Bobby Orr": Michael Farber of Sports Illustrated
1P 19:00:
Good pinch and hit by Francis Bouillon.
Ovechkin on RDS again again:
Listening to his iPod while suiting up.
Brent Johnson :
starts in nets for the Caps.
1P 20:00:
Seems like ages since Canadiens played here. Crowd should be into it.
The guy from the Washington Post:
Says Huet would look good in a Caps' jersey. Washinngton has some goaltending talent in the system but Olaf Kolzig will be 38 in April and the Caps could use a mentor who'll be good for the next two seasons. Thing is, that may be the situation here.
Watching Ovechkin:
on RDS. All-Star weekend footage. What a pleasure to see a happy, smiling professional athlete. He'd never make it in baseball.
History lesson:
François Gagnon, who's great at mining these nuggets, writes in La Presse that the last time Canadiens were within six points of the conference lead at the All-Star break was in 1998. Alain Vigneault was the coach and Andy Moog was his goaltender. Canadiens ended up in seventh place that season, 20 points south of first. They then won their first playoff series against Pittsburgh before they were eliminated by Buffalo.
