Great seems somehow insufficient.

Four goals – including the winner in overtime.

Canadiens came back from 3-0 and 4-2 to steal a point in a game Washington dominated.

The Brothers K scored in the same game for the first – but not the last – time in their careers.

Guillaume Latendresse had two.

But on this night in his home rink, the NHL's most exciting player was not to be denied.

OT 1:26:

Wow!

Four

OT 3:27:

The Brothers K against Ovechkin. Very entertaining

OT 00:00:

Ovechkin?

Or Latendresse?

3P 00:00:

My date can wait.

19 shots: four goals.

A team of destiny or what?

And Ottawa is being shut out by Boston at home

3P 30:00:

Caps bench looks like they've all thrown up in their mouths.

3P 00:33:

THEY STOLE A POINT!

On the worst day of Guy Lafleur's life, GUI! GUI! GUI!

4-4

3P 2:25:

Kolzig makes a game-saver. Ouf!

3P 4:00:

The Max line is on fire.

3P Break:

Shots are 34-15. And it's a one-goal game. Absurd.

But fun to watch, eh?

3P 6:10:

But wait ...

Gui! Gui! Gui!

On their 15th shot .

4-3

Crazy game

3P 7:30:

What's there to say?

Best player in the  league.

A monster.

4-2

3P 9:00:

Huet has been really good. This would have been over.

3P Break:

Caps' fourth ine has wreaked havoc in the Canadiens' end.

3P 12:00:

Good shift by Smo line produces an icing and some good pressure by Koivu line until Brashear, of all people, clears the zone.

3P Break:

No OT! No shootout!! I've got a late date.

3P 14:00:

Last brothers to score in the same game for Canadiens: Frank and Peter Mahovlich in 1974.

3P 15:00:

Canadiens are playing them fairly even. Caps are a one-line team. But that one line is something else.

3P 17:39:

Tom the Bomb: great team guy. Went after Ovechkin after the hit on Gorges (Ovechkins fifth check)

3P 18:30:

Not great night for Ryder, Higgins or Hamrlik

3P 19:30:

That Backstrom can play.

3P 20:00:

This would be the comeback of the season. Caps have to be getting tight collars.

Between periods:

The fat laedy was standing at the microphoe after Ovechkin popped his second. She was clearing her throat. Canadiens were down and nearly out. But Sergei and Andrei decided, what the heck, let's make this a hockey game.

2P 00:00:

Koivu misses an open net, then Andrei K gets a buzzer-beater.

Amazing.

3-2

2P 1:18:

Big PP. Andrei K kind of sold that, eh?

2P 2:30:

Latenresse got slashed. No call. Shots are 25-9.

2P 5:00 :

Signs of life from Pleks line. But it's a long climb back

2P 7:16:

Maybe not over.

Sergei.

It's Russian night.

3-1

2P 8:06:

Over

His 41st.

3-0

2P 9:00:

RDS guys wondering if Jaroslav Halak will get a start this weekend

2P 9:30:

Kolzig is getting great protection in the slot. A sea of red jerseys for the Canadiens to fight through.

2P 10:00:

The Kostitsyn brothers had a quick shift together.

1P 12:00:

Ovechkin seems determined to hit everybody in a white jersey. Shots are 19-8

2P 14:00:

Blue bridge chairs in the penalty box. They should serve party sandwiches in there.

2P Break:

Another penalty. This one is slipping away. Washington seems to want it more.

2P 17:00:

Koivu is playing hard. But Washington is winning the physical battles.

2P 18:00:

Not quite the Kovy show tonight. Caps are doing a good job of jamming his passing lanes.

2P 18:50:

Maybe Carbo is doing too much line matching.

2P 19:00:

Is it me, or is the camera having trouble following the play?

Between periods:

Great up-and-down intensity. Like a playoff game. Ovechkin is on fire ... Some blown PP time ...

1P 1:00:

Nice hit by Sergei on Semin. Huet is doing a lot of flopping around.

1P 3:00:

Markov is huge tonight. So's Kolzig.

1P Break:

Three straight seasons of at least 40 goals. What a pity he's wasted in D.C.

1P 6:54:

Now that, my friends, is a one-timer.

That's 40 for the Big O

1-0

1P 7:27:

Another PP, off a bad-break play by Bégin. But Semin high-sticks Komisarek to even things up.

1P 8:30:

Great skating and skill game, like Tuesday night.

1P Break:

Bégin splits the defence and Markov nearly cashes. Canadiens are over their early-game jitters.

1P 11:00:

Ryder and Higgins both muffed their captain's fine feed.

1P 11:30:

Ineffectual PP

1P 13:00:

I like it when Pleks line is first wave of the PP.

1P Break:

Canadiens best shift was by the fourth line: Max, Latendresse, Sergei.

1P 14:40:

Yiles! Who had coverage of Steve Eminger?

1P 15:00:

Shots are 6-0. If Canadiens withstand this initial onslaught, they'll be OK

1P 16:00:

Caps trying to crowd Huet. And Ryder runs Brashear!

1P 17:00:

Best play of the PK: Francis Bouillon foils a one-timer.

1P 18:28:

What a hit! Ovechkin on Bégin.

1P 19:00:

Kovalev goes off after inadvertent high stick on Ovechkin. This will be a big PK.

1P 20:00:

Kovalev against Ovechkin to start

1P 20:00:

It will be interesting to see how Bruce Boudreak keeps Ovechkin, Backstrom and Kzlov away from Smolinski, Bégin, Kostopoulos, Markov and Komisarek.

Saku:

gives Luc Gélinas some intelligent reaction t this "lack of respect" BS from the last game.

Christopher Higgins:

One goal and minus-1 in his last 10 games. He'll bounce back.

Communism is well and truly dead:

Alexander Ovechkin wears a gold cross. Seems to work better than an Order of Lenin.

Sheldon Souray:

Back on IR. He's missed 27 games – and counting – this season.

Yvon Pedneault says:

... this is Alex Kovalev's team. No argument from me (but maybe one from Saku Koivu) ... Pedneault predicts Canadiens will recall Carey Price before Feb. 26 to get a good assessment of the team's goatending situation before the trade deadline ... Benoit Brunet says the dager of going pedal-to-the-metal late in a game you're winning is guys like Jarkko Ruutu taking runs at your star players if they're still out there ... Brunet says Canadiens' defence corps is as good as Ottawa's.

Heartbreaking:

There isn't a sadder story in Montreal than  what Guy Lafleur is going through with his son.

Where would Washington be without Ovechkin???? Not in last night's game! WOW!!! What a display of grit and talent! Not to take anything away from the Caps, but he singlehandedly beat us on the score sheet!

On the other hand, what an awesome show of determination by the Habs to make it a game late in the 2nd and into the 3rd. This team really has heart. Ottawa, I'm sure, is looking over its shoulder... (especially with key injuries to slow them down)

I totally agree that Hamrlik was not in this one, and I think Kovy was a no-show or was blanketed by Caps coverage. Higgins was disappointing, too. Nevertheless, others picked up the slack and stirred up things to steal a point.

Way to go, Habs! Bring on the boys from New York - we could be looking at a 4 point weekend.

enjoying the high's of being a Habs fan

The Teacher mentioned below, we are ahead of CAR in points (by 7 or something) and yet we are still behind them in the standings, I agree this is stupid, very stupid. The NHL needs to dump 2 teams (1 from each conference) and only have 2 divisions...that way GOOD teams will make playoffs, it would make it more exciting...lets start a petition to make this happen

Cable Guy's picture

Boone, where is your 'Last night' column for last nights game? some of us depend on that each morning after a game.

Ed's picture

Boone had a late date last night. That might explain why there is no column yet. Maybe he can't decide whether to write about the game last night, or his date last night.

showey47's picture

well we can only hope boone has finish like ovy and not like ryder or higgins, lmao

I just hope he didn't slip up and call her Josh Gorges.

showey47's picture

LMAO

Ed's picture

I wonder if Boone knows we are commenting on his love life. That will teach him to tell us when he has a date.

Blitzen's picture

Honestly, I'm not sure why everyone talks about the Koivu line as the #1 line. It's the #2 line in reality.

The SerGuiMax line worked wonders last night. I think that Lats and Laps should be allowed to play more together to develop their chemistry. They were pretty good with Dandy as well and that line got broken up when Smokes came back.

G-Man's picture

Seems like Koivu can't do it anymore. The more I watch him, the less he does succesfully. He's too small to be physical, plays lousy D and doesn't have a big shot. Higgins and Ryder are lost out here with him. How many wingers have to play with him before we realize Koivu is the problem? Posters always say "we need someone to play with Koivu". His career is almost over. Time for a new #2 center. Good luck trading for him.

OldGrover's picture

Koivu's been the heart and soul of this team through some rough times for the past few years. Now that we're doing well, we can be patient and see if he's going to make it work. We need to replace Ryder on his wing - preferably with someone new, since I REALLY like the kid line of Lats-Lap-SKost and we definitely don't wanna see AKost-Pleks-Kovy split up.

Speaking practically, we CAN'T trade Koivu (no trade clause), so let's just focus on getting him a sparkling right winger. Maybe we'll end up with a kickass grinding line (Beg-Smo-Kostop) and 3 scoring lines.

RGM's picture

What a game. This team showed a lot of character and spirit after falling down 3-0. For a brief moment after the 4-2 goal, I thought it was over...and then Lats scored. And then he scored again. Top to bottom, this team is playing with heart and they're not giving up when it looks dark. In order to beat the Habs, you have to play a full 60 minutes, there is no ability to let up against these guys or else they'll make you pay.
Amazing performance by AO. What can be said? 5 points. He made the decision at some point after skating off the ice on Tuesday that he would make up for that performance, and boy did he ever. He's so fun to watch, even when he's terrorizing my team. And you can tell that he's loving every moment out there, whether it's that beauty goal that secured the hat trick or when he took a run at Komisarek. A very special player that we're all lucky to be able to see.
One last thought: 5 points back of Ottawa now, game in hand and two against them next week. Is it possible that by next Saturday our Montreal Canadiens will be sitting in 1st place in the East?

Wops's picture

Hate to lose but great loss in a way...

Ovechkin beated us single-handly!

great show, great game, I can sleep ok.!

It was definitely Ovechkin's night, he was pretty fired up after losing the last game, but there's a lot to cheer about, namely the determination and never-say-die attitude of the Habs. They had an off-night, and came back twice to get a point. I'll gladly take that every now and then.

Klondike Habs Fan's picture

Hey All,
This wasnt all bad, a loss in a game we should have lost will keep our heads out the clouds.

To all the Ryder bashers: He is having a bad year goal scoring, and looks out of place on his line, but he works hard and hits and plays decent defensively. So lets cut him slack, sure trade him if we can, but I still think he is good Hab all round.

Mr. higgins on the other hand seems to have tottally lost his game. Maybe Koivu is rubbu g off on him a bit, but those two seem lost.

Maybe we shoudl trade Higgins, not Ryder.

Your joking eh,lol

VancouverHab's picture

One great thing, two average bad things:

1.] Great: the comeback(s) were evidence of exceptional character. This is much much more important that a win here.

2.] Did Koivu play in OT? If not, why not?
3.] And Smolinski was on -- and the highlights show me him picking his nose while Ovechkin scores the winner.

OldGrover's picture

Yes, he played with Higgy

VancouverHab's picture

Dear OldGrover: Thank-you kindly!

Even Strength Goals
Latendresse 12
Plekanec 9
Kovalev 9
Kostitsyn,A 9
Higgins 8
Ryder 7
funny that two of this sites favorite whipping boys are among the team leaders, especially the AHL 3rd liner.

lol.

Man, loving some of the posts...
just a few reminders:

We did beat Washinton...2 days ago...utterly, 4-0.
anyone remember that?

Oh yah, we're 2nd in the East....no biggie...

We have a young team, yah, but unless a couple of you guys forgot, Gainey had to re-build the team...you tend to do that through drafting and playnig young players...

So, yah, Alex the Great put on an amazing show, but the Habs are still a good team.

To all Bandwagon fans: don't hate, celebrate...that or at least don't change your opinion EVERY game...ugh.

Does anyone know when O'Byrne will be back? Hes been out a while and no word on a possible return.

Great Question ,I was wondering the same thing!

Ian G Cobb's picture

We are OK # 12, One superstar in a playoff series of best of 7 can be taken care of no problem. Our young kids just gave him to much time and space. It is all a learning curve for them right now. by play off time, we will send them to the golf coarse. One superstar does not make a team.

likehoy's picture

blunt assessment

Gorges and Bouillon are too small to be paired together, which magnifies the need that we need O'Byrne or another big dman. Gorges and Bouillon got ran all night by the bigger capitals forecheckers

side note

does this mean dandeneault is going to make his comeback??

P St. Pierre's picture

Boullion is tougher than Gorges or Dandenault, in my opinion. I know he isn't the greatest passer or shutdown D-man, but he's a hell of a competitor. Apparantly he broke Ovechkin's nose tonight.

Timo's picture

The key to Franky's play is positioning. He has low center of gravity which helps him, but he needs to ensure that he is always in the right spot whether getting ready to hit, take the hit, or make a play. Gorges held his own tonight, i think he did alright against Ovechkin. Not sure why he was on ice at the same time as ovechking, but he did alright.

Gorges needs more ice time and a bit more body mass. But I think having O'Bryne there tonight would have helped.

ebk's picture

have said that all year. I'll give the two credit for competing, though. They play hard every night, especially Frankie the Bull.
