Enough!:
No more Swedes! Get Gary Roberts out there for an interview.
too cute!:
Kris Draper's kids
Bob's last gaffe:
"Five players from Sweden" Uhh, let's see: Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Franzen, Holmstrom, Kronwall, Lilja and Samuelsson
Pittsburgh fans:
Staying to applaud. That's some class. They'll see a Cup or two down there.
Lidstrom:
First European captain to win the Cup ... but not the last.
The Cup:
Oh shut up, Bettman, you tool.
3P 00:00:
INCHES!!!!
What a series
3P 00:33:
How valuable is Draper?
3P Timeout:
I don't believe this
3P 1:27:
But wait!
Gonchar scores!!
What a series.
3P 3:20:
Malkin got up slowly. I think it will come out that he was hurt by the Mike Richards check in the Philly series.
3P 4:00:
Reverse jinx nothing, the Wings are champions!
3P 5:00:
Hossa's last game as a Penguin? Bob's last final?
3P 8:00:
Detroit is just killing them. The best team in hockey. Not even close.
3P Break:
Their only hope is shortening the bench and double-shifting Gary Roberts.
3P 10:00:
The Cup is out of the box.
3P Break:
I don't think we're in for OT.
3P 12:00:
Did that win the Smythe for Z?
3P 12:24:
What a weird one!
3P 13:44:
Cleary heroically dives to clear the zone, gets a stick in the face. Bob doesn't notice.
2P 15:00:
Smart to play Malkin with Crosby and Hossa.
3P 17:00:
I watch Orpik and remember how he nearly ended Erik Cole's career. Dirty player.
3P 19:59:
Who's that beside Bettman? Boots Del Biaggio?
3P 20:00:
Please let it end in regulation.
2P 00:00:
Should be a great third period.
2P 3:47:
Brilliant penalty on the team leader.
2P 4:34:
Bob had it right: great play by Crosby, Great shot by malkin. Game on. And Osgood is shaky.
2P Break:
I love the guy, but that's a bad penalty by Datsyuk. And he's one of the PK guys. Pitsburgh goal here and they're back in it.
2P 7:00:
Only a matter of time before Gary Roberts takes over the game.
2P 10:00:
I thought young legs would be the difference tonight. As has been the case since Canadiens opened the season in Carolina, I was wrong.
2P 11:53:
Speed kills. Filppula goes right past Orpik to jump on a big fat rebound.
2P 12:07:
Crosby is back, but he's not himself.
2P Break:
After a dominant Detroit shift, Roberts sticks Samuelsson on his way off. The guy is a lock for the Conn Smythe.
2P 15:00:
Lebda and Lilja or Detroit's Breeze and Dandenault.
2P 16:50:
Crosby hurt by Stuart check. Bob doesn't notice.
2P 17:54:
Huge PP for Pittsburgh.
2P 19:00:
Lidstrom is having one of his cerebral, totally dominant games. He checks no one. No one checks him. And he totally controls the tempo just by making smart passes.
2P 20:00:
Pittsburgh has to get some O going. Tough when Detroit plays as smart as it did in the first period. But Osgood is the weak link.
Coach's Corner:
Shows the "famous Detroit criss-cross" without explaining it. "I talk about Roberts because I know what's goin' on. You don't know what's goin' on." Cherry figures Roberts somehow engineered Talbot's goal the other night. Please, let this be the last edition of the season.
1P 00:00:
Very good period for the Wings, but only one goal. So we've got a game.
1P 00:48:
What a move Cleary put on Malkin.
1P 1:18:
I misread the number: it's Sydor who's awful. But so's Scuderi.
1P 2:30:
Scuderi is just awful.
1P Break:
Detroit has had better chances, but Pittsurgh is hangin' around. Each game has gone this way.
1P 4:30:
What a set-up by Datsyuk. Another favourite Russian of mine.
1P 6:45:
Good PK, but Malone got away with tripping Kronwall.
1P 8:45:
Again, Bob misses high stick Hall delivered on Lidtsrom.
1P Break:
5-on-3. And Pittsburgh still can't score. Millen points out five lefthanded shots on the PP. Pitttsburgh looks sluggish.
1P 11:32:
Dumb. Drake gets frustrated and takes an idiotic penalty.
1P 13:00:
The Ex-Leaf Jinx: the goal went in off Gill.
1P Break:
Detroit has the early legs, to my great surprise. They're off to another dominant start.
1P 14:00:
Osgood makes me nervous.
1P 14:07:
Beautiful passing. And Rafalski threads one through a crowd.
1P 15:43:
Jeez, Bob, when Osgood skates toward the bench it means Pittsburgh is getting a penalty.
1P 17:00:
Did Cherry love Roberts missing everything and crashing into the end oards while Detroit calmly wheels up ice?
1P 17:48:
Horrible giveaway by Kronwall.
1P 18:30:
Staal, Hall and Talbot have become a great line
1P 19:55:
Therrien plays Crosby against Filppula
1P 20:00:
Crowd is into it. Should be a great one. The series has become a bit of a classic, eh?
Cherry:
The Gram Parsons jacket again. And hey, Babcock's McGill tie is now 3-1. Cherry ass how much gas Fleury has in the tank. Is he kidding? The kid is 21. He can play triple overtime and go home with three lingerie models.
Brian Rafalski:
A good, intelligent, cliché-free interview
Marc-André Fleury:
No matter what happens, this kid has arrived. And it will be expensive for the Penguins.
Ryan Malone:
I can't believe he's playing. Will he wear a cage or something?
Wow..it must have been a miracle......a team with GARUY ROBERTS (who came down from a higher level, you know)didn't win the Stanley Cup. Every team he's played on HAS won, haven't they??????????????????????????????
Please, God, let CBC make some changes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From NHL.com:
"11 – Total Stanley Cups won by the Red Wings, the third-highest total in NHL history behind Montreal (23) and Toronto (13), and the most by a team based in the United States."
Montreal (23)
Ex nihilo nihil fit
Montreal (23):
Yeah, I know Mr. Hazard, it looks weird eh? We're so used to 24. It's 'cause they're counting Cups won in NHL history. Our Cup win in 1916 was when Montreal was part of the NHA, so it doesn't tally when they're counting just NHL wins.
Best of all is that having won 4 cups in the last 11 years must make their fans feel pretty secured about the immediate futur of their team and franchise because all of their recent successes have been the result of their present day organization.
"The Montreal Canadiens are the Greatest Organization In the world"
After all your comments lately, don't you think it's time to remove this from your signature?
Gilbert
And how do you propose to change the system, which is in its infancy and is probably modelled after Detroit's?
Montreal lost a good five to 10 years of competitiveness thanks to the mistakes of the mid 1990s.
Things are moving ahead, but obviously not as quickly as some would like or expect.
Wow, Cherry left the building quick. Guess he was too heart broken about Roberts not getting to hoist the cup.
3P 5:00: Hossa's last game as a Penguin? Bob's last final?
yes and yes. Gainey will take a good run at Hossa this summer and Hughson is now the man at Hockey Night in Canada.
ebk - All eyes will be on the Pens to see their moves this summer as they try to stay under the cap with a little bit of breathing room , it should be interesting. Hossa impressed me with his defence.
Hossa is a stud
NM49 - I just took a casual glance and Pittsburgh should be OK for next year in terms of the cap, assuming they don't re-sign Hossa. It's the year after (with Malkin) that will be a challenge. Sounds familiar.
The Original 24 Cups
24 - Sounds familiar , no your not going to get me going on that one again as you know I'm not worried , In The Rocking Chair We Trust + Julien Brisebois. Damien Cox's article today claims Malone has played his last game with the Pens likely which is a surprise to me cuz of his name and he's a hometown boy so Hossa may be signed. It all depends which avenue there going to take and without a 1st and 2nd round choice this year it's their problem and it's fine with me as they are one of the mountains we have to eclipse. If they can't afford to sign Hossa it will certainly put a smile on Gainey's face , or at least a smirk , and will make that sad day (Feb/26/08) for the Habs at least digestable.
NM - I can't believe that Shero won't take a serious run at the Cup again next year seeing that he has tons of cap space and already has Gill and Sykora coming back (Sykora was less than brilliant in the playoffs). Shero's on the clock and he knows it. I would be surprised if the Pens signed Hossa over Malone, but if they do, then Malone will do just fine in a Habs uniform. If I were Mario I'd offer Hossa a one year contract equal to Crosby's with the idea that it would be his best bet to win a Cup. He could then walk after next year. I'm also waiting for Catherine Zeta Jones to return my call. Shania is also an UFA these days.
I'm keeping my emotions in check this month - we've been burned by UFAs before and there also won't be any 'can't miss' prospects at the #25 spot in the draft. Looks like more of the tried and true building block approach. I'll construct the scaffolding and you start to mix the cement.
The Original 24 Cups
you are right, 12 goals, 26 points in 20 games. He sucks.
Just as Hossa so did Malone funny guy ...
Hossa was a must have for the Penguins to be what they where during those late series ... he scored 12 goals for them ... thats twice as much as Crosby did and more than anyone else on the team .... 26 points total ... one less than the captain himself.
Malone had good series too ... just dont compare him with Hossa.
Hossa : 12 goals, 14 assists, 26 point.
Malone : 6, 10, 16.
...no wonder your arguments didn't convinced poster abk below ....
oups !
like I said, he sucks! you convinced me.
You're bang on Mike, Koivu to hoist the next one? Enjoy your Saturday, you've gone above and beyond the call of blogging duty this year.
Thank you! I've loved every minute of it.
On to the draft.
Come on Mike give us one of your '' about last night " blog or something ... one last time ... pleazzzzze !
FIIIINNAAALLLLYY!
Ex nihilo nihil fit
nice to see the Wings win, what a hockey team. Pen ain't to shabby either. Habs have their work cut out for them getting past these two teams.
Think the Don Cherry's of this world will have enough balls to eat a little crow about all the crap they dump on European hockey players. Nope, I don't either. Nice to see Lidstrom be the first European born and trained captain hoist the Cup.
Three of the last four Stanley Cup winners have been highly skilled hockey teams. Tampa, Carolina and Detroit. Hope this signals the end of the crap that passed for hockey before the lockout.
Earl - well said. My only complaint with the 2008 playoffs was that there were quite a few series that lacked high drama and intensity. Oh well, that's life. The focus now turns to Gainey and the off season. Don't hold your breath!
The Original 24 Cups
Steve, I agree, Detroit and Pittsburgh blasted through everyone fairly easily.
hahaha! Bettman is a tool
I like that, another Boone Classic
Wow what a series! What a season! Thanks to everyone here for making it so great!
LOL, I thought Harbor Grace was a warship...good grief I've been in Halifax, Toronto & Vancouver, that's it. All of my travels have been out of Canada & the US.
Interesting thing that came to mind...
Scotty Bowman and Bob Cole are the same age. How is it that Bowman is still so sharp and Cole is... Cole?
/\\ike
GO HABS GO!
LOL The Great Bob Unmistakeable Cole says there are 5 Swedes on the Wings roster. Yeeeeaaaa ;)
Bettman, get your hands off that beauty.
