3P 4:00:
The Olé chant rings out.
3P Break:
What a set-up of AK46 by Kovy! They're running an offensice zone clinic out there.
3P 6:45:
dandy saves an icing and Kovy hits the post. It's shinny now.
3P 8:20:
Lang, Kovalev and SK74
3P Break:
Jamal Mayers jumps Kostopoulos. This is the kind of crap that won't be going down once big Georges is playing.
3P 9:20:
Halak has been sharp. Not easy in a game like this.
3P 10:00:
RDS for the last 10 minutes. I've missed them.
3P 00:00:
Very impressive!
3P 1:24:
How are you liking Tanguay tonight?
3P 16:50:
What's that, three posts? And nearly a third for SK74
3P 16:13:
Carbo can't be liking this defensive zone play. Tough to stay focused in a laugher, but still ..
3P 15:45:
Dominic Moore: what an idiot! Harvard man ... and brother of a guy gooned out of hockey. Simpson second-guessing Carbo for keeping his foot on the gas.

A Savardian Spinerama by Hamrlik

"Hey, it's a new Olympics, Al. Get over yourself." Pop him, Mike!
Hot Stove:
All about Michael Peca. Team Canada. I'm off to RDS.
3P 10:45:
Hughson calls Markov and Komo "as good a defensive pair as there are in the NHL"
Pierre LeBrun:
A treat. Really knows the league. And I like Milbury ... Malkin for Gaborik? ...
3P 20:00:
Cujo in. This is over. Let's hope no freak injuries.
3P 17:33:
Good call. C'mon. Obvious.
2P 7:02:
Another PP. Grabovski trying to check Kovy.
2P 5:00:
Tanguay a bit better than he was in Buffalo: one goal, three assists.
2P Break:
I can't remeber Canadiens beating the Leafs this badly in recent seasons. This is an ass-kicking. It could be 10-1.
3P 17:33:
That shouldn't count
2P 1:55:
C'mon, Bob. Smile.
2P 8:52:
Good that Halak is geting some work. And Antropov scores. Ruins the PK perfection run.
5-1
2P 8:53:
GUI!!!!!
Koivu makes a great pass.
6-1
2P Break:
AK46 is just on fire. And he's not alone.
2P 2:40:
The PP is better than last season's ... and that's saying something.
2P 11:43:
The kid goes for delay of game.
Have you ever seen a more dominant PP?
How many completed passes? 15?
Sergei again.
5-0
Over.
2P 10:37:
Brief Leaf furry. Plekanec turns it over and chaos ensues.
2P 3:30:
"Ron Wilson has seen his team get a little bit rattled" Duh!

Me to friend who is a Leafs fan and sitting in
platinum seats tonight: I know we're only half-way through the game,
but it's not too late for you to abandon ship and cheer for a team that
actually knows how to play hockey.
Friend who is a Leafs fan (with glowing optimism and desperation): It's not over yet! ...It's a team-building year!
Sad thing is (for him obviously), he's been telling me this for as long as we've been friends.
3P 18:54:
Anyone sorry they traded Grabovski? That's an undisciplined slash by Lapierre
3P 3:00:
They paying Cujo per shot?
2P Break:
Great night for Canadiens, rough night for the blog. Please bear with me while I try to figure this out.
1P 9:00:
What a play.
Hamrlik trails, takes perfect pass from Gui!
1-0
1P 00:05:
Very alert save by Halak.
1P 1:30:
AK46 is on fire, and no Leaf can handle him
1P 2:00:
No comparison, talent-wise. Not even close.
1P 3:30:
Kostopoulos outmuscles Antropov on the PK. That's 7-for-7 on the PK
1P 12:09:
Canadiens are 8-3 on faceoffs
1P 11:20:
Tough sequence for Gorges against Leafs top line. Antropov way too big for him
1P Break:
"Kovalev evades Luke Schenn" Yeah, that'll happen.
1P 7:22:
Canadiens strike first in both games. Pleks line looking great and then Kovy makes it 2-0, outmuscling Frrogren on the goalmouth.
1P 5:37:
First penalty of the game. Leafs need a momentum change, because the Canadiens are brutalizing their D. Too fast. Too skillful.
2P 17:08:
Sergei makes it 3-0 on a one-handed tip-in. Great play to keep the puck in by the Captain.
2P 18:00:
Leafs trying to go high on Halak? First PP

Oof! The wardrobe. Sows Detroit highlight. Says it was last night (it was Thursday). Minute examination of Leaf play. Defends Martin Gerber ... A weak shot at Milbury ... long sequence on that NHL superstar Eric Godard ... Predicts Ovechkin will get hurt ... NOT A WORD about the Canadiens ... Big promo for John Tavares ... Big promo for the O, slamming the leafs for drafting 18 "foreigners" in the last five drafts ... Who are "us people"? ... Accuses McClean of being "against Canadians"
What a waste of air time!

Starting Halak:
Demers says it's an excellent decision. Four games in six nights. Kid needs work. Price has to be paced. Stick that up your ass, Michel Bergeron. Bouchard's keys:
First 10 minutes.
Patience with Leaf trapping.
Third man in the offensive zone can't get caught.
Lang:
Brunet likes him. Also likes Roman Hamrlik being the "grand frère" of Ryan O'Byrne
Vesa Toskala:
For me, the best player ontheir team. I'll be watching Luke Schenn. I don't know how an 18-year-old can play D in the NHL unless his name is Orr.
ACC scoreboard:
Gee, it looks small
Bilingual announcement at ACC:
Right on!
Olympic athletes:
When you think of what they sacrifice ... man, I love those men and women
Anthem challenge:
Anyone give a rip? I don't.
Pedneault on RDS:
But it's Sylvain, taped in Roberval last month
Simple Plan:
Up next on RDS. Elliotte Friedman, whom I really like, talking to Ron Wilson on the CBC. Hey, that SmartBoard is cool, eh? They miked him for practice, which is cool. "Each guy has to focus for 10 or 15 minutes. I don't think that's too much to ask." Wilson is said to be "brutally honest." "The players always know where they stand day-to-day with me." "I don't want nyone to think I'm a miracle worker ... It's going to take some time .. When we get there, I wan to be able to open the door for the team" Interesting guy.
1P 16:55:
Halak robs Blake after Komisarek is beaten and Leafs have a 2-on-1.
1P 17:40:
Hughson and Craig Simpson are really good. Forecheck on breeze creates a chance that hits the post.
1P 19:15:
Kovy gets an early chance. That new guy Frogren didn't look great. Hughson says the Leafs have faceoff trouble.
1P 19:40:
I'm on CBC for a while ...
1P 00:00:
Great game in prospect. Leafs will be tough. So many young guys ... what a contrast to the lusy teams with McCabe, Wellwood, Tucker and, yes, Sundin.
Brilliant idea:
The crowd sings O Canada. This whole ceremony has been way cool and unToronto. Things are changing up there.
HNIC pre-game:
Mike Milbury and Kelly Hrudy talking about the Senators ... then we're off to Vancouver. Marc Crawford will be a good commentator
From poster doug, watching CBC:
Did Ron McLean REALLY just say that Habs'
offense looks strong but then ask Hrudey and Milbury will they miss the
defense of CRAIG RIVET (gone for long time), SHELDON SOURAY (gone all
last year and not defensively strong), and MARK STREIT (PP specialist)?
EMBARRASSING!!
And from moser:
"But what about the loss of Lyle Odelein and Chris Chelios? That should
hurt them, too, it seems, without their grit and power. And losing Mike
McPhee's solid two-way savvy is a real blow to the club. And when is
the hockey media going to start talking about the Habs losing Craig
Ludwig? It's been pretty hush-hush, but you have to admit, it affects
the team greatly."
Funny stuff, guys. I'm hearing footsteps.
2P 19:33:
Early 2-on-1. Jarvis told Friedman Canadiens are playing chip and chase
Pre-game:
I'm on RDS, for now. Jacques Demers is saying nice things about Ron Wilson and the changes in Toronto ... Joel Bouchard heaps praise on special teams, says 20 per cent on the PP, 84 per cent on the PK are doing well. Canadeins were a unheard of 24 per cent last season ... Chantal is back! Interviewing my man, Robert Lang ... Benoir Brunet talks about the ridiculously busy pre-season schedule. A lot of vets missed most of them, and the rustiness showed in Buffalo. Pierr Houde says Leafs are where the Canadiens were at in 2000. Ron Wilson: "Eight years sound about easonable" to become a contender. Wow! Realistic, but ... not much to cheer at the ACC.
1P Break:
Whew! A track meet. Surprising it's still scoreless. Gotta like the new Leaf style.
1P 14:20:
Great fourth-line shift.
1P 15:15:
Toskala robs Gui! That was Canadiens best chance. Great up and down game.
2P 15:40:
Tanguay makes it 4-0. What, four red jerseys in Toskala's face?
I'm not usually a betting man:
But I've jumped on this one, proposed by Earl Knipfel, who posts to Habs I/O as ebk:
Ryder
20-24 is a wash, for every goal Ryder score over 24, you owe me two pints, for every one he scores under 20, I owe you one.
Gui
16-20 a wash, I owe you 2 for every goal above 20 and you owe me one for every one under 16
Hey Mike, why is your live blogging all jumbled up? I enjoy reading it the day after but it's bizarre following you from 2P, to 1P, to pre-game... Especially when I havn't even smoked yet ;)
On another note, great game... What was with Blake doing the fist-pump after scoring? You're down by 5 goals buddy, have some class and skate to the bench quietly... What a douchebag.

HAHAHAHAHAHA
Oh man! that's what I said about Blake to everoyne watching the game with me. It's like.. dude.. you're down by 5 goals and are acting like you just took the lead or tied a Cup match... lol it was hilarious.
This results demonstrate the fact this sport, although all the so called experts have recently made their predictions for the season, is quite impossible to predict on a game per game basis. How can the Leafs beat Detroit in their own building and be so dominated when they come back home?
www.sportsirens.blogspot.com
I watched the Leaf/Detroit game from about the 2nd period on, and like everyone else I talked to about it, said Detroit was playing at about 50%
Made Cherry look like the usual clown on the post-game proclaiming how the Leafs are "gonna be knocking on the playoffs." Bahahaha

Good game, although it must be taken with a pretty huge grain of salt: it was a contending team coming off a disappointing loss playing against a team that we all know will be out of it by November 1 coming off a surprise win. This one had Leafs letdown written all over it.
Latendresse had a strong game last night...I've noticed that a few of his detractors are writing that off as being due to him playing on Koivu's line last night. That has always been somewhat of the point: Latendresse is a player with good offensive potential, but he has not been able to grow into it playing 8-10 minutes per game on the 3rd line. In some respects, I'd almost like to see him stay with Koivu, on the threat that he goes back down to the 3rd or 4th line if he doesn't park his butt near the net. I'm not completely convinced that Higgins is better on that line than Gui would be, as both Koivu and Tanguay need the puck to be effective. I love Higgins as a player, but his one huge fault is that he quite often gets tunnel vision when the puck is on his stick. He might be a better fit with Lang and Sergei Kostitsyn.
As for the new CBC Hot Stove, I think I'm going to carve my eyes out with rusty spoons next week during the second intermission instead of watchign that drivel. Mike Milbury is absolutely worthless...there is a reason that he is on TV now, and its because he demonstrated very little as a GM over his career. His idiotic comment that its a no-brainer that you choose a kid from Ontario instead of some European with a 5th-round draft pick demonstrates his lack of judgement when it comes to player evaluation. I'll just point out that Detroit didn't do too bad ignoring Mad Mike's advice: Datsyuk (6th round), Holmstrom (10th) and Zetterberg (7th). Montreal has fared alright as well: Sergei Kostitsyn (7th), Markov (6th) and Halak (9th). That's a pretty good power play unit there. :P
Chris - I agree and with Higgy on the 3rd line it gives other teams that much more to think about but for this to happen #84 has to be more consistant which he hasn't shown especially against good teams but that would really be a plus to get Higgy away from Saku. When #84 was on the 3rd line he got a lot more than 8-10 minutes and only sat when we went in defencive mode in the third minute. Lets hope they will try it.
You are correct that the ball is in Latendresse's court. If he wants to make the jump to the next level, he's got to improve his consistency. I'm impressed that he worked on his skating this summer, and I feel that it has made a bit of a difference. But his problem has basically amounted to desire: if Saku Koivu can stand in front of the net, so can Guillaume Latendresse. And as he hopefully found out last night, standing near the net with Koivu and Alex Tanguay ready to feed you seeing-eye passes is a good way to pot some cheap, easy goals.
Excellent post.
You The Man!
Coming home from the bar after far too much to drink, this is a welcome addiction to my night!
just mentioning again how happy i am that this site exists.... since i moved back to europe this is the only way of keeping up to date with what's happening to the habs (in detail) plus all the extra information. so keep up the good work, and hey, thanks a lot to all of you!

Nah, Crawford was annoying me so I switched to watch something besides hockey, but then I put the game back on right when the Cannucks tied it up at 3...good game though

Sooo take this for what it's worth:
A friend of mine says his mom is very good friends with Dave Mulder, the habs doctor. According to him (my friend), he says that the doc says the habs got the screw job with the laraque deal because he is REALLY injured and the habs are looking at negating his contract. Apparently his initial physical missed some seirous injury, which has now been identified, and he is nowhere near hitting the ice...
Again, this is from my friend...
Wow sounds like the "i know a guy who knows a guy who knows a guy that knows" You would think the journalist would have Mulders hot secretary or the parrot give out this info. In a nutshell do you think that they miss things in physicals on players that command Millions of $??? I dont think so. The papers would be all over this! I think your friend has nothing much to say so he makes things up!
Just my 2 sense!
yes, absolutely I think things can get missed on physicals. I said at the start of the post "take it for what its worth. chill out. no one is making anything up. Stop being so antagonistic, I was just passing on information that I heard that I thought people might find interesting.
jeez.
dude its not antagonistic, its being real ok. Information and rumors "hello" Information is a fact rumors is what YOU printed. Im a habs fan as are you. They showed good charactor on the win tonight in philly.
Uh, what ever happened to doctor-patient confidentiality?
Your friend's mom must be REALLY (nudge, wink) good friends with the team doctor to have that kind of access to the info in his medical records.

See below. We are not talking about some kind of private, intimate details about an acquired STD or something. We are talking about a career-impacting injury that is affecting a brand new contract. This is a legal issue, not a health issue. She is a lawyer, not a physician.
It could be. It might all tie in with why the Penguins only offered Laraque $750,000 - as per BGL on CKAC two days ago. As he told it, Pens GM Shero wanted him to take the cut to make room for Hossa, but there could be more to the story. A month later, it cannot still be a pulled groin muscle - unless the dude really has inches! :)
yeah, i agree, it is suspicious. but i really hope it is not true!
the other thing is that the doctor would not exactly be involved in contract talks with any player. this is just hokum
Nowhere in the post does it say that Mulder is renegotiating the contract. But if you think the doctor doesnt advise the management on the health of the players, then you sir are out to lunch.
There is no such thing as doctor patient confidentiality when it comes to the legality of a pro sports contract. The health status of players, as we all know from injury reports, is made public, and their contracts are contingent on them be able to perform.
yip, agree with that one... hard to believe such a story would leak out in that way.
Lat's will fill in for Rock.
Is that a serious comment?
I hope your wrong...
