Okay, goodbye everyone.  Well, alright, it's only sort of goodbye. I've been a fan of Habs Inside/Out since its inception in the 2006-07 season, and it's usually the first site I check in the morning to see what's happening with my beloved Habs. I've had a lot of fun writing The Other Wing this year. But things have changed for me over the course of the season. I write here as an unpaid volunteer, and I've been having some serious second thoughts about what that means for others. I've noticed the increase in ads supported by the site, and earlier this week Mike Boone posted stats on the number of site visits, which are up more than a hundred percent over last year. In short, the Gazette makes money from HI/O. So, in an age when my professional colleagues in the newspaper business are struggling to keep their jobs and keep their papers viable, a site like Inside/Out could be an important source of work for them. Therefore, I believe it's wrong for me to undermine the work they depend upon for their livelihoods by providing content for nothing.

Mainly for that reason, I am withdrawing from The Other Wing. So, thanks to all who've read my stuff, and who provided interesting argument, insight and commentary of your own in response. Those of you who chose instead to make rude personal comments while hiding behind your handles...and you know who you are...can go to H-E-double hockey sticks.

I still love the Habs of course, and I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I didn't write to vent and to celebrate the team's exploits.  So I'll continue to write about hockey on my own blog. And I'll still be coming here first thing every morning to get the latest Canadiens news. So, thanks again for reading and...Go, Habs, Go!

JT-- I want to thank you so very much for more than you really know. Because of our passion for this game and our club we met here. My great gal Andree bought me this computer and started to show me how to sound out words and formulate sentence structure on it. For the first time in my life I started to learned how to communicate with the written word. Your articles were the best and easiest for me to follow. The way you put words together was just wonderful for me to pronounce to try and immulate. Your choice of vocabulary challenged me to look up the meanings and drive Andree crazy asking her, a french Canadian. I read all your writings for two reasons. One, you sure know and have a passion for this game and our club, and secondly you showed me how to construct words into sentences in a more meaningful way. You have been a wonderful mentor for me. My mind and my soul carries you with me every day. Thank you for being a great part of my new life my friend. Look forward to seeing your great intellectual posts in the future. HUGS to you and my spell check, Ian Cobb

Too bad but completely understandable. There was always something funny or interesting and most of the time the commentary was spot on.

Writers are losing their jobs because newspapers business models are outdated, and because they were too late in adapting to the changing ways that people get their news. You writing here is not taking a job away from anyone. If that is what you have been told then just lol. The Gazette has been a steaming pile of *expletive deleted* for quite a few years now. I am not just talking about the sports section either. How many writers do they have under 50? under 40? under 30? The old boys club was never that good, and they are out of date with the younger generation causing the younger people of Montreal to have 0 interest in the Gazette. I am not saying this to be demeaning to the existing sports staff, but they know it is true. The internet is the young persons tool, no efforts were made to adapt and get the youth interested in the paper. If you only use ideas from the past, the past is where the business will stay.

nice JT, excellent post, the very best in a long line of outstanding posts.

Good for you J.T. It's nice to know that solidarity is not dead. Recently when there was labour uncertainty at the Gazette the Gazette management sent an e-mail to all the Journalism students at Concordia and McGill offering them unpaid internships in the event of a strike or lockout. These students would have gotten a great opportunity, but at the expense of being scabs and providing for free the content the gazette didn't want to pay its writers for. Not one single student accepted the offer and the gazette was roundly pilloroed by Jounalism Profs and journalists. J.T.'s principled stand is not unlike these students. As long as the gazette is profiting from this site they should pay their contributors. Anything less is exploitative. This isn't about J.T. wanting to get payed, but her wanting to ensure that she didn't make someone who is payed (like Chris Aung-Thwin for instance, whose excellent articles seem to be becoming more and more infrequent) redundant. Workers should be payed for their work and anyone taking the job of a skilled worker for free is damaging their profession. Finally, I had no idea ads had been increasing because I use Firefox with AdBlock Plus (available on the mozilla page under firefox add-ons) which prevents ads on any page from being displayed. I highly recommend it.

Solidarity sister.

I'm going to miss your sane voice of reason on this site. All the best to you. And...go Habs go!

Weird, my previous post has disappeared into the ether. First of all, I wanted to express my sadness that J.T. has decided to relinquish her Other Wing posts. While I don't always agree with her posts (I think we disagree somewhat on Tomas Plekanec, particularly! :P ), her writing was always well-constructed, witty and informative. I unfortunately don't have time to read all the blogs out there, so it would be great if you continued posting at Habs Inside/Out like you did before your stint on the Other Wing, as you were always one of the most colorful and respectful contributors here.

I for one will miss your articles, but I agree with your principles. Thanks and good luck!

I really enjoyed your writing .Pretty damn good for a girl...I hope this isn't a pout because we're in for some serious hard times.Sometimes, principals can be very handy when you get a little tired of something.Anyway , good luck and I hope you come back at some point.

Thank you for your inspirational writing. I have been reading H does NOT stand for Habs since you started writing it and haven't stop reading it after you started writing here. So I guess not much will change for me, though i think this site will miss one if not the most insightful writer. All the best

J.T. - thanks for all your insights. I totally understand your decision and support you 100%. Best of luck. Hope to see you around here again when the dark clouds pass.

JT, Sad to see you go, but as we all know, Bob Gainey never negotiates mid-season. Hopefully you'll be back next year with a decent contract, unless you're shipped off to the west coast for three journalism students and future considerations. Go Habs! I will totally miss reading your posts! Thank you for all your contributions!!

Good for you J.T. I can't believe the Other Wingers here are volunteers. That is disgusting. This is informed commentary that requires research and talent and not paying for it is exploitative. As a fellow Journalism grad - and one who is looking for work at the moment - I commend you. See you on The H is not for Habs. I'll be blogging myself about this on my site: randboro.blogspot.com I don't think I want to hang out here anymore.

TommyB's picture
Well I had my first good laugh of the day, nice and early this morning when I read someone post that maybe you want to get paid for your writing. This site has a couple of the most knowledgable and entertaining writers around when it comes to hockey and more specifically, the Habs. One writes most of the articles presented on the Main Page, another writes articles on a page mostly dedicated to live game blogging, and a third was here on The Other Wing. With your departure, we're back down to two. Oh, and a note on the increase in the number of posts...three or four posters who have virtually nothing else to say other than "Carbo/Gainey sucks" does increase the number of posts considerably, but more so like the class clown continually raising his hand in the back row of class, jumping up and down. So, numbers can be deceiving. They only show quantity, not quality. Your spot here will be missed. Stick around as a regular poster, though. That in itself will help to upgrade this site.

linp's picture
You are a very good writer and a passionate Habs fan. Thanks for all your posts. The reason I come to HI/O is the same as going to the game at the Bell Center. That is my passion. I want to share my passion. It didn't bother me whether anybody agrees with me. If I don't like a post, I just skip it. Good luck to you and enjoy the spring.

Garbo's picture
That's very backwards thinking. By contributing for free you are not only making the site better, but helping bring in more money to support those who are getting paid. Sounds to me you have other reasons for this, which you are entitled to keep to yourself, just don't lie about it.

Dave Kellerman's picture
Garbo, I wish you could take your hate and anger somewhere else. You are a miserable grouch who for some reason seems to take pleasure in injecting this site, which is supposed to be a forum for amicable discussions. with vitriol. For you to attack J.T. with more of your flat-line attacks is just another eloquent demonstration of your automatic lust for character assassination and bottom-feeding rage. Just go away. Go hate the world somewhere else. Actually don't. Hate it by yourself because nobody is interested in hearing about your senseless tirades. We all actually have a life we're trying our very best to enjoy.

Naila Jinnah's picture
Dude. Take that thought and reverse it. As someone who is in journalism, I completely get where she's coming from. I don't provide other media outlets with free content because that's undermining my profession and preventing me from actually getting a paying job in the industry. Did you know that when you submit photos or comments to news sites, that outlet owns them at perpetuity and can reproduce them in more or less any shape or form... for ever... without EVER paying you? Even if your pic spearheads a national ad campaign that ends up bringing in a whole lot of money. How can J.T. justify providing free content to the Gazette when her job might not be safe from people providing free content to her place of employment? Her decision is one of integrity and actually practicing what you preach. And I completely support it. PS: There's a difference between providing free high-quality content to someone else and doing it for your own purposes (ie, YOUR blog, website, twitter feed, etc). That's personal branding. Just FYI. http://starshinediva.blogspot.com

Chris's picture
A second thought regarding your post-script: you mention that personal blogs, websites and twitter feeds are personal branding. This is true. However, it can be a slippery slope: one could also argue that you are giving the milk away for free, so why should I buy it? To a certain extent, the declining fortunes (and opportunities) in the media industry are heavily tied to the proliferation of free online content. Why should I pay to read a professional columnist in a newspaper when I can simply load a website and get a slightly less polished and well-researched opinion for free from a blog? In my case, I will continue to visit this website because it represents the work of talented journalists who are paid for their work. I refuse to visit the various blogs out there, partially through a lack of time but also because I feel that blogs and websites contribute somewhat to the pressures on the media industry. Those are my choices, and I respect those who differ in their choices. Just wanted to throw another couple of pennies into the discussion. :D

Chris's picture
One thing you are perhaps undervaluing regarding providing free content to a media outlet like the Gazette is the exposure you receive. Blogs are a great way to express one's opinions, build a portfolio, etc. But a blog that receives no traffic is not as useful as one that does. One way to build a reader base, as we have commonly seen here at this website, is to contribute a lot of thoughts and comments to a "mainstream" site while also linking to one's own blog. Readers that like your comments will want to read more, especially if that contributor slowly begins to scale back their input to the mainstream site. I think it is fair to say that most of the posters who include their blog address in their messages are here first and foremost for the community and the content provided by the Gazette staff, but I also think that those same people are hoping to siphon off some readers towards their own content in the process. So there can be a give and take, especially for aspiring journalists who may need to demonstrate that they have the talent to sustain a reader base as they seek paying jobs in that industry.

True, but there is a difference between providing comments and being a featured (published) poster. As the latter, there is a greater benefit to the publisher, and it competes in the same space as paid professionals. Add to that, J.T. has a professional career in media. Content from a pro like herself has added value based on her training, abilities and experience. For her to be expected to provide free content is no different from you or me expecting a plumber to fix our pipes for nothing more than positive word of mouth - no matter how much the plumber enjoys the work.

Chris's picture
I don't want to try to guess what J.T.'s motives are: she stated them in her farewell post and I am sufficient to leave it at that. The only rebuttal I would give is that your plumber analogy is not quite applicable, because she is leaving this website (where she was a volunteer contributor) for her own blog (where she is a volunteer contributor). The material will still be provided free of charge, it will just be available to a smaller audience. I applaud that she has thought about the matter and decided she does not want to continue in the present way, I just wanted to point out that sites like Habs Inside/Out often give us posters (even those with featured poster status) as much or more as it receives from us. Habs Inside/Out will be diminished by J.T.'s departure, but I think it is fair to say that she would not have anywhere near the audience for her own blog had she not been posting here regularly in the first place.

With all due respect, J.T.'s motives have nothing to do with it. On her own site, she makes the rules. She can benefit directly from building up her audience there herself and get revenue from ads, rather than letting the CanWest corporation reap whatever benefits her well-researched and professional work brings to them on their site. If they are relying in part on her contributions to build and maintain readership (which is the determinant factor in setting ad revenue), then she deserves to get something concrete back from it; otherwise it's completely exploitative. The quality of content is like anything else: you get what you pay for. If this site is diminished by her absence of stand-alone copy, then they should either take her on the payroll, or give some existing sports writer at the Gazoo (like say, the highly competent and witty Stephanie Myles) the work. Suppose the Gazette chooses to layoff some staff reporters while J.T. slaves away here for free. Then she's undermining her whole profession - a conclusion I completely agree with. That's J.T.'s whole point.

Chris's picture
From the point of view you express, one could extend it to say that every single one of us who post on this website are being exploited. The success of Habs Inside/Out is based on a two-pronged formula: contributions from experienced, award-winning professional journalists (supplementing the columns and articles that were previously available for free before the inception of this website on the Montreal Gazette website) and a forum with some very knowledgeable, passionate hockey fans. People come here for the community, for the ability to converse directly with journalists that have direct access to the Habs, and for the ability to spout off on all things Montreal Canadiens during games. As somebody else pointed out before, a site like this has perhaps helped the Gazette maintain its sports department, as newspapers are struggling with the economy and the changing way in which people seek out their information. A site like this, servicing as many people as it does, does not come cheaply: the Gazette may or may not be making scads of money off of the ads that are now running here and the increased traffic. I do know, having been here since its inception, that what began as a small little website has exploded into what we see now, with numerous server upgrades along the way and vastly increased bandwidth to pay for. The Gazette staff have rarely stepped in and curtailed the proliferation of advertisements by posters for their own blogs, many of which generate money for their authors through ad-revenue and/or financial compensation (such as Blog Nation). In fact, they have actively helped many of those people along the way by adding them to their "Sites We Like" bar on the side. My point is that many of the comments in here have been a little critical of the Gazette for exploiting the Other Wing contributors, criticism that I find to be a little unfair. From the outset, the Other Wing was a spotlight for some of us fans to get a bigger spotlight for our comments based on whatever criteria the HI/O powers used, comments that were being made before in the general comments section prior to the creation of the Other Wing. J.T. worried that her Other Wing contributions could potentially be closing the door for some aspiring journalist to get paid work in the media or that her volunteer contributions could make those of current bloggers (like Boone, for instance) redundant: that is completely fair and I applaud her for her principles, as I stated before, and I can completely understand her point of view. I just simply don't see any exploitation here, simply a nice gesture on their part to one of their most prolific and entertaining posters, and a nice gesture on her part to make a principled stand, something that is somewhat lacking in society today.

Looks like someone wanted to get payed but didn't. Good luck J.T. Although I won't really miss your posts, I know you were appreciated from a lot of posters on this site.

>Although I won't really miss your posts, I know you were >appreciated from a lot of posters on this site. With a backhand like this you really should be playing pro tennis. Or at a minimum staying away from sharp objects like keyboards. It's the lowest form of class to post a comment just to slag someone on a last post. Right wrong, agree, disagree - don't act like a 8 year old. (And I apoligize to any 8 years olds that might see this and be offended by being lumped in with this twit.) JT - Thanks for your work and let us know if you start writing elsewhere.

ReverendJim's picture
I think you are trying to add a 2nd degree to what I posted. Where actually, there wasn't. It had to be taken literally because that's what it is. Will I miss J.T's posts : No. Was she appreciated by most posters here : Yes. No 2nd degree. But, since you are ssssooooo smart and all philosophical. You sir, should stay away from forums if you cannot read a post for what it is without transforming it in YOUR OWN WORDS. So technically, by posting what you did, you offered the back hand, my friend.

Naila Jinnah's picture
Uhm, she does write elsewhere. Look up "The H does not stand for Habs" in the right sidebar. http://starshinediva.blogspot.com

Thanks - I was not aware of that. Will check it out.

itpf's picture
I don't understand your logic at all. The site makes money, and that money goes to hiring/paying journalists. Having volunteer writers allows for more content, and the salary saved and extra cash can go to someone else who might not be hired were it not for a volunteer working for free. Anyway, bye bye. For all your work that I absolutely hated there was an equal amount that i enjoyed or gave me a good laugh. don't take that as an insult... it's kind of like Sean Avery - you love to hate him. Good luck!

I see your point and I agree with you. There's something else that bothers me too, I am a Gazette daily subsriber and have been for years. What irritates me is the sports articles being posted here the night before. I like to bring my paper into the office and read it at lunchtime. I'm paying for it yet anyone who comes on to this site sees it the night before free of charge. I just might cancel my subscription. I read your blog regularly, I prefer the smaller blogs and sites now. HIO has a 100 percent increase in posts and 100 percent decrease of quality posts. Ciao. http://moeymusings.blogspot.com/

TommyB's picture
Moey...your point is a very valid one. Some us us, though, would have a real problem with getting the "up to the minute" news on the Habs. I know this site has tons of Montrealers reading it, but many of you fail to realize that you are not the only ones who come here looking for Habs news. Sometimes I honestly have to wonder just who really thinks they live in the centre of the universe. I can't go down to the corner store and grab a Gazette in the morning. I would only find the Toronto Star or the Toronto Sun. So I find this site absolutely essential, and the almost immediate posting of information as it comes available keeps me sitting here in front of my computer most days for many more hours than I really should. So, although I see your point...I'll call, and raise you one. If HIO became a subscription service, I would gladly pay for it. This would address your concerns, and it might help to eliminate some of the garbage that goes on here between posters.

Moey's picture
Tommy, I have no problem with people getting free Habs news here, I just wish that Dave & company would wait until the morning to post their articles, to align with the newspaper delivery. I think it must be just a coincidence that I didn't receive my newspaper this morning??!! First time ever. Too funny! http://moeymusings.blogspot.com/

Chuck's picture
Hey, I've got an idea! Perhaps they could still post the sports articles here, but leave every third word blank. It could be the HI/O equivalent of a scrambled pay-per-view channel. :) Ok, enough of my attempted humour. J.T., you are a wonderful word smith whoso contributions will be missed. Hopefully you'll continue to post your knowledgeable points of view in the regular comments. Best of luck, Chuck

The Teacher's picture
Agree 100% I love reading the paper and it infuriates me to see the articles posted here the night before. What's the point of buying the paper, like you said.

Naila Jinnah's picture
Easy solution? Don't read HIO at night! I mean, for post-game stuff, sure. But if you know you're gonna read the paper on the train ride into work or at breakfast the next day, skip your late night HIO stop. Or better yet... Read the REST of the paper! http://starshinediva.blogspot.com
