Dealt to Carolina for Erik Cole yesterday, Joni Pitkanen signed a new contract with the Hurricanes today.

Three years, $12 million: $3.5 million, $4 million, $4.5 million.

Pitkanen, who will be 25 in September, was Philadelphia's first-round pick, fourth overall in 2002. He was dealt to Edmonton last summer in the trade that brought Jason Smith and Joffrey Lupul to the Flyers.

Pitkanen played a shade over 24 minutes a game last season, second on the Oilers to Sheldon Souray. He was making $2.4 million.
