As the Canadiens prepare to start the 2008-09 season, the Habs Inside/Out crew got back to business for the first Puckcast of the season.

PuckCasters Pat Hickey, Dave Stubbs, Mike Boone and Kevin Mio have clipped on the microphones this week to preview the coming season, the 100th for the Canadiens. Among other things, we examine the long preseason schedule, the impressive showing of the team's prospects and how the Canadiens will manage the increased expecations after last season's performance.

Nice to see the puckcast back! I think the idea that Higgins needs to adjust his expectations of himself is exactly right. He's never scored thirty goals in any league. I don't know why he suddenly thinks he's going to score forty in the toughest league in the world. If he were to set the bar at twenty-five goals with a really good plus/minus and a strong performance on the PK, I think he'd be much more likely to reach his goals, and not as unhappy with himself.

By the way, I liked last year's theme music better. :)

Sound glitches on not this is a great format guys.

Great to put the voices to the words.

Kind of astonishing how seldom anyone ever talks about Tomas Plekanec. I think we really tend to overlook the value he has to the habs. He is the starting centre for one the league's top offenses, not to mention one of its best lines.

J.T.'s picture

I was going to post that...but I'm one of the people who thinks he's great and I have to be careful not to talk about him too much! It amazes me that he's still under the radar, but I guess that might be good when it's contract time. I expect thirty goals from him this year, to go along with lots of assists as Kovy works on his contract year and AKost breaks out.

He's the Canadiens' best kept secret ;D No one suspects Super Pleky!

RDS reporting that if Higgins is a no-go on friday, lats takes his place alongside el capitaine and alex tanguay. Thats a move that weakens both our second and third lines. If it were me, I would keep at least line 2 reasonably talented with SK74 up with koivu and tanguay...and leave lang and latendresse together.

I think you hurt 2 lines with this move. Latendresse cannot skate with the likes of tanguay and koivu. What a waste.

yathehabsrule's picture

I thought that Latendresse's skating was far improved over the off-season. Regardless I think this is his make or break year to prove he belongs in Montreal.

I think injuries could be a real concern for the habs this year. They lucked out last year, but luck only goes so far. I believe we will have cosiderable injuries(tho not hoping) and some of our young prospects like Pac and Weber, could end up playing a major role as a result. I can see these 2 players up with the team as early as December. If that happens we won't skip a beat!

Gainey should grab McClaren, who was put on waivers by the sharks today. He's much better than Dandy, and Dandy is in the last year of his contract anyways. 2.5 mil for McClaren is a bit more than Dandy's at (1.75) but much more worth it.

What is wrong with Dandy, can someone tell me? I don't see it. He always plays a solid game, very defensive.

saskhab's picture

We don't have room for him under the cap, and quite frankly, we don't need him at all. If we're think of adding any D down the line, they should be puckmoving types. We're woefully short on those, and it's a big reason why Weber got such a long look in camp.

If we don't need him, which I don't disagree then why doesn't Bob move him?
Forget the money he makes, when he plays he does a good job. Everyone forgets that last year we had little to no long term injuries. Assuming Dandy is a better than Breezer then Dandy becomes #7. So Dandy walks at the end of the year, it makes sense to keep as the player that will fill in for a long term D injury and Weber comes up to play a few games. It is a great situation. I have yet to have anyone show me Dandy is not a good player on the ice, he is simply an odd man out but we need him as an excellent in/out player who can fill in up front of on the back end at any time.

I wish the people on this board spent as much time worrying about the performance of the front 6 forwards as this team was poor at even strength scoring last year and the PP magic dried up in the playoffs.

Is not the performance of Higgins, Koivu and others up front a bigger issue? With Markov, Hammer and Komi the back end is solid if it stays healthy, we need scoring at even strength, that is what we need, not worrying about the fourth line or the 7-8 D. Come on people.

saskhab's picture

I didn't say we don't need Dandy. I was saying we don't need McLaren. Sorry for the confusion.

2.5 million for a fill-in defenseman? Yea right.

Hello ALL

I have not said much during this off-season, but very happy about the prospects of this year. I love what Gainey has done and I cant wait to go to Montreal this November to Patrick Roy night! I just scored some tickets to that game. It costed me an arm and a leg, well worth it. GO HABS GO!

Man, I missed the Puckcast, but c'mon guys, technically this one was awful. Recording 4 voices (properly) into a computer is not that hard.

Having said that, I'm looking forward to more of your insights as the season goes on. GO HABS GO!!!!!

Schaefer and McLaren have been put on waivers. Brule has been sent to the AHL - Price sure is looking good. Thank you Mr. Timmins!

I am happy to hear that Pat Hickey shares a similar perspective with me on Higgins. If he had a clearer sense of his own skills he would have realized long ago that he would make a great next installment in the Gainey/Carbo line of Habs players. Even his leadership skills would be more prevalent if he wasn't busy trying to be what he is not naturally, a 30-40 goal man.

But as somebody noted, when you stick Higgins on a line with Koivu you are placing him in an offensive role.

The Habs don't know what to do with Higgins either.

twocents's picture

Certainly the fact that we had very few NHL caliber offensive options when Higgs came up didn't help his identity crisis. But, I don't believe Gainey or Carbo would be unhappy with him producing 20-25 goals a year, using his speed defensively and being a great penalty killer, even if he is on a line with Koivu. It is Higgins himself who wants to be the 40 goal sniper. Carbo and Gainey were thrust into offensive roles at different times in their career and they were very useful but they knew their capacities and where their greatest value lay. As someone said (Hickey?) the problem is that Higgins beats himself up when he produces what his skills honestly offer. Having said that, he is a very determined man and he may yet find a way to be more of a finisher than his natural skills present. We'll see this year, with Koivu and Tanguay he won't be able to say that he wasn't provided chances. Not that he shot totals don't show that already.

Anybody else getting static during playback when they're talking?

Yep, it ain't just you.

Ladies and gents,

I should have posted this up top, but we had some software glitches today that ended up corrupting the audio file. We tried to clean it up as best we could, but know it's far from perfect. We hope to have these issues resolved by the next puckcast.

We apologize for that.

twocents's picture

Thanks Kevin, no worries there was still lots of good, audible, stuff in there.

Good listen, was unaware that it was a recurring podcast. All over that now haha
