For the first time this season, Canadiens head coach Guy Carbonneau was able to ice his complete lineup against the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night as the Canadiens wrapped up a five-game homestand with a 3-2 shootout win. But that healthy lineup might not last as Roman Hamrlik left the game with a leg injury. The win over the Hurricanes gave Montreal a 4-1 record on the homestand and they are 6-1-1 on the season despite not playing their best hockey, especially on the power play, which is struggling after being the best in the NHL during the past two seasons. The Habs play their next four games on the road starting in Minnesota on Thursday night.

PuckCasters Pat Hickey, Dave Stubbs, Mike Boone and Kevin Mio review the just-completed homestand and look at the play of certain players including Alex Tanguay and Tomas Plekanec.

What happened to the Puckcast? It's been nearly a month now!

When will the next PuckCast come out? It is now 3 weeks and counting from the last one, and I'm looking forward to the newest release.

Dave, I don't think Koivu being in a contract year has much to do with his impressive play. He has proven throughout his career that he brings the best he has, regardless of contract situation. He had a career year 2 years ago with a new three year contact in hand. The difference between his really good years and his merely good years has more to do with other factors: health, line mates, team chemistry and the normal fluctuations in an athlete's career. The fact is, he has been very consistent throughout his career. His point per game ratio tells the story. Entering this season he had a .81 points per game. In his 14 seasons with the team he has only dipped below that ratio twice, if you don't include his rookie season, when he was establishing himself. This may seem a bit defensive but, the point is, if there is one player that has proven he doesn't just show up when it benefits himself most, it's Saku Koivu. While where on the subject of stats, with regard to Tanguay being a marksman. It should be noted that Tanguay has a career 20% shooting percentage. For perspective Kovalev's is 12%. Notes on last night's game: -Koivu played too many minutes for maximum effectiveness, likely because the game was on the line. - Kovalev had his best game of the year.

Twocents, the career year comment came as a result of a conversation I had with Saku at the start of the season. We discussed it; he said it wouldn't be a big deal. The fact remains, Bob Gainey said during training camp that any new contract would be dictated by his play and would have nothing to do with his longevity or status as team captain. I'm not suggesting he's playing well because there's money on the line ... he's played well in the first year of multi-year contracts. I've never believed that contract status has been a factor in Saku's performance. He's too proud a guy to be motivated by that. Dave Stubbs

Dave, Thanks for clarifying. I am glad we see the same thing. I know you are a fan of his and I loved the interview you did with him this year and shared with us on the site. I thought it was excellent on both your parts. Saku takes so much undeserved heat from some of the press in Montreal, you are certainly not included in that group, that I worry about propagating negative opinions. If he tops his career best this year, the last thing he needs to be accused of, is playing for a contract. But, you know, if he does put up a great statistical year it will likely be inevitable and that's sad. On the matter of Gainey's comments: Mike Boone posted audio of that scrum on here and I heard something in there that gave Gainey's esteem of the captain away. If I remember right: he made his comments about Kovalev first and made it clear that if Kovy performed like last year he would be more than happy to resign him, leaving the flip side plain to the attentive ear; if he plays like two years ago... see ya later. When discussing Saku he began by saying that with a player that has been with the organization a long time and has proven his value and dedication there is "another element" added to the considerations. He then made it clear that Koivu's play on the ice this year would dictate his own approach. The thing is, of course play this year would dictate his approach greatly, only foolish GM's operate in a fashion other than that, especially with a 34 year old. I think Gainey had to add that point because of what he had already said about Kovy. He knew a controversy turned on the omission of that point. By Gainey standards that small reference to 'another element' speaks volumes. I believe his point is that barring a disaster of a season Saku will be resigned, Saku willing of course, however, the contract will reflect his play this year, as it should. Whereas with Kovalev the gauntlet has been thrown down and he is challenging him to maintain his performance or else further investment in his career will hold little appeal. In other words, Gainey isn't in the market for Kovy's b or c game yet would likely take Koivu's at the appropriate rate. I know it may seem that I am reading a lot into this but Bob is a very deliberate speaker and words, and their meanings, are hardly ever wasted by him. When there is a variation in comment regarding players the variation is usually there to indicate a real difference.

last year when our PP was working well, aside from Streit, was anything different? I think we just need a good accurate shot from the blueline, and to be constantly moving and not staying still. I used to like that disgonal pass and the 1 timer from Kovy. How come they don't do that anymore? maybe other teams have caught on so we need to be more creative.

What do you guys think of this: Tanguay - Koivu - Kovalev S. Kost - Lang - A. Kost Higgins- Pleks- Latendresse ...and then come combo of the 4th line. But decrease the time of the first line. And make it 1A 1B

Really,Lats with our 2 fastest forwards

jimbo He could always be the trailer on the play.

linp's picture
There are a lot of discussions about changing the point man of our PP. I think more important is we don't have someone planting in front of the goal and deflecting the puck. Even when we have someone there, he doesn't move into the shooting lane as if he is afraid of the puck or he is only waiting for a rebound. The goalie always has a clear view of the shot. We need someone who has good reflex and quick hand to tip the puck. Another observations, most of our players try to get rid of the puck too quickly instead of trying to make a good pass. We end up giving the puck away more often than not. We are rushing the play too much. We really need to practice a lot breaking out of our zone just like what the Duck's do. If you can anticipate where your teammate will be, it is easier to make a good pass.

I know alot of hab fans think this is the year to win it all. But I believe it's next year. Here are my reasons. We'll have Pacioretty playing(big power forward), and if we can find a way to get Emelin here from Russia. I saw him on Utube, and he's the real deal, unlike any defenceman we currently have. big, strong, great shot, great defensively, can hit, and good offensively. As well, looks like Koivu is going to have a good year, so Gainey will resign him and Kovalev to a 1 year deal, and Weber, (offensively gifted),will man the PP, with his booming shot. we'll also go get another D man. I'm not so sure Komiszarek will be resigned, because he'll ask too much. Besides if Valentenko is ready, at a relatively low cost, we don't need Komi. So we'll have at forward: Tanguay, Koivu, Higgins, Kovy, AK46, Pleks(maybe), Pac, Sergei K, Maxwell, and Weber(on the 4th line) say bye bye to Latalentless. his new home will be another city, probably Hamilton, or maybe leafs, where all losers go. On D: Markov, Hamrlik, Komi(maybe), Gorges, O'Byrne(maybe if not traded), Valentenko, Emelin(maybe), and another unnamed Dman. I think Bouillon will be traded. in goal, Price and Denis. Halak will be traded. there you have it, my team for 2009-2010.

Mattee.'s picture
Ya. I pretty much disagree with everything you said. Especially with regards to Komisarek. Everything else was also wrong, but the Komisaurus statement was, if possible, more wrong. I don't care if he asks for one of Gainey's Stanley Cup rings, we'll sign him.

SlovakHab's picture
Sorry mate, I absolutely disagree with absolutely every sentence.. - Komisarek is not spelt Komiszarek - "if Valentenko is ready, at a relatively low cost, we don't need Komi" - only you think so.. There is a HUGE difference between the two. HUGE! - Pacs, Weber, Valentenko, Emelin, Maxwell etc are not our saviors - they are young, unexperienced, will make many mistakes. Do you really think the team with 5+ rookies will win us the Cup? - I am getting sick of your Latendresse bashing. You have presented your opinion for at least 100 times here. 21 years of age, third season in NHL... This guy is gonna have a heck of career. I can't imagine how good he's gonna be when he's 27 and learns his true role with the team - Denis as a backup goalie in a SC contender team?? - you mentioned Lats, O'Byrne and Halak traded, plus you reckon all UFA's will be probably resigned. Have you ever heard of a little thing called Salary cap? How do you wanna accommodate all of them? Those players would not be traded for another <1M salary players.. - you basically suggest to get rid of these sophomore players, and start over again with rookies, because you've seen/heard of them from pre-season games, You tube etc. - The best player on Bulldogs - D'Agostini is not mentioned at all. What about him? All together, I would give your suggestion 1.5 point out of 10. Nothing adds up there, there is no conception, no strategy, just get rid of players you don't like and bring half of Hamilton (the city of losers, as you called it) over to MTL. Peace out.

the only player I suggested getting rid of, is Lats because he's lousy. the others will be UFA and not returning, plus they'll be some trades. don't put words into my mouth!

Have you ever watched a Montreal Canadiens game because it doesn't sound like you know too much about hockey...

I probably know more about hockey in my little pinkie than your entire body!I think 35 years of watching the habs gives me some insight as to this team! And you think we're not trading Halak? trying reading some NHL columnists opinions, you'll learn I'm right! And you think Bouillon is coming back at the expense of weber or Valentenko? The only reason Weber and Pacioretty are not here now, is because THIS YEAR there is no room. But some players will be UFA at the end of this year, and won't be returning, ie. Bouillon, Dandy, Breezer, Begin, etc. and there will extra $$$ as a result to resign Koivu and Kovalev. Want more facts? I'll be happy to elaborate.

Roman Hamrlik skipped practice with a leg injury that he suffered in Tuesday's third period. He was hit on the side of his right knee by a Joe Corvo point shot, requiring a few stitches to repair. He will travel with the team to Minnesota and Long Island this week, hoping to skate on Thursday morning. He will be a game time decision. - TSN Drive For 25 Is Alive!

Losing Hamrlik would be a major blow - agreed. But I think a little more credit could be given to Josh Gorges. Every time I notice him he's playing solid defensive hockey, and while he doesn't come close to Hamrlik in terms of physical play or offensive potential, I think he might still be considered a legitimate #4 defenseman.

Best line of the podcast: Dave Stubbs. "Why don't they just call him (Jancevski) up and see if anyone complains." I laughed. I completely agree with moving Markov back to the left side on the powerplay. He's so long a set-up man, the shooter's role is a foreign body language to him. I think it was a mistake to remove him from the role he'd performed better than anyone else in the league in the first place. Sergei Kostitsyn, or even Gorges or Hamrlik can shoot. Sure, Sergei might make mistakes in his inexperience, but he's got a cannon, and better to have a few mistakes coupled with a few goals than no goals at all. On the other hand, I completely disagree with moving Plekanec to the third line. The problem I see with his line is that he and Kovalev are both holding the puck too long and trying to do too much with it, rather than using each other with a set of quick, short passes like they did last year. If they play another eight or ten games and don't find their groove, then it may be time to shake things up. But to that end, I wouldn't put Plekanec between Sergei and Lats. He's not proven to have much chemistry with Latendresse in the past, nor really with Sergei either. If the line is split up, I'd like to see Kovalev moved to play with Lang and Higgins moved to Plekanec's wing. That Pleks/Andrei/Higgins line was great a couple of years ago...no reason not to try that again. http://habsloyalist.blogspot.com

Fant-HAB-ulous's picture
I think if Pleks is going to change lines...i see this: Tanguay - Koivu - Kovalev S. Kost - Plek - A. Kost Latendresse - Lang - Higgins ...and then come combo of the 4th line. I say this only because in the pre-season, the brothers with Plek seemed to mesh well, and adding Kovalev to an already great combo can only make things better.

"...Roman Hamrlik left the game with an injury to a leg injury. Last season the team was lucky enough to stay very healthy all year. This year they have injuries to their injuries... So would that be a sprained bruise? Concussed groin pull?
