Montreal singer, songwriter, entertainer, Habs fan and Inside/Out regular Dan Iorio offers this minute-long musical tribute to Vinny Lecavalier, sung to the tune of the Rolling Stones' Angie. As always, brilliant stuff. Thanks for sending it along, Dan.

Just food for thought, if BG was prepared to throw the money at HOssa & BRIERE (apparently 8 million/yr), he would pay that kind of $$$ to Lecavalier.
But the question is, what's the price in players to get him?
If what we hear is correct, that is too much.
If it was Lecavalier & Recchi, I might consider...

and screw Farber, what do Americans know about hockey.
Alright lets boycott Farber and the censoring, patronizing Gazette blog. Guys put your links up for your blogs so we can have a grown up conversation over there

Wow!!!
Looks like Mike Farber don't want Montreal to win another Stanley Cup. That's way he don't want "Dirty Vinny" to go to Montreal.
DAVE, you may have known Mike Farber for 30 years, a Big Whoopty Doo!!! I'm sure that there are more than enough people in here that are more than qualified to sharpen his or your pencil........
Now that was the most Bone Head comment that you have ever made in here Dave.....
While we're at it, let's get Martin St-Louis too. RDS desperately needs more players to do interviews in French. Tanguay and Laracque were a good start. We can get a Giguere or a Lalime for a good Price.
Bring les boys home, I say.

Farber is a pretentious fop (hopefully that won't stop me from being able to sharpen his pencil).
I used to admire a lot of his SI writing, but far too often lately he seems more concerned with crafting overwrought prose to display how clever he is, as opposed to offering actual insight.
The basic premise of his article is idiotic. It's almost as if he wrote it knowing we'd all pile on him, thus justifying the fiendish fan response he desires (isn't he just too crafty?).
Suggesting a franchise player stay away from the glare of the world's best hockey market is absurd. If Vinny's half the player I think he is, he'd welcome the challenge.
In a year where we have a shot at a Cup and can give up underperforming assets (Higgins, Plekanec) plus futures from a deep system to get a proven superstar - you do it.
We haven't had a Cup in 15 years. That's the longest break in my lifetime and I freakin' hate it (maybe Farber can insert some flowery musings to help me better express myself). Every single one of us would trade a Cup this year for four or five years of average performance. Don't deny it. You would.
We're not likely to resign Koivu and Kovalev. If Saku comes back at a reasonable rate and we have Lecavalier, that's an upgrade for not much more cost.
Vinny: we'd welcome you with open arms.

This article just pisses me off. It suggests Montreal is so bad to its stars. I can think of a few whose lives became better due to the pressure to win, and the feeling they get from a standing O from 21.273 fans!

Farber doesn't seem to get that the deal makes sense to the Habs in 2008-2009, but not for the long-term. Lindros would have been a big problem for Flyers in era of salary cap had they signed him for that deal when he was 28. Same goes here. For such an astute hockey writer I'm disappointed that he doesn't see how tumultuous the future could be if we did this: it's not all about the 100th year. This centennial crap is killing me: don't we want another hundred successful years or is it supposed to be our grand finale? I think too many people are unintentionally positioning us for the latter for hoping for this no-holds-barred fireworks and then exit.
We've SUCKED for ten years. This is our ticket to potentially sucking in 4-5. Give me NJ (not the team, but the constant contending) over TB's one hit wonder any day of the week.
TB - you made you bed, now sleep in it. Stop bothering us with your fiscal responsibility. Montreal fans - calm down and stop pressuring Bob to do the stupid "star" thing: he's human and he's tried in the past with lesser talents like Briere. We get this and we've got problems: stars don't win hockey games - teams do.
You're right, doug. Suffering with a crappy team for so long gives the young guys no perspective. I was talking with a few fans at work who were prepared to ship the 2 Kostitsyns, along with Gorges and Subban and Higgins. Must be something in the nicotine in their cigarettes. I love Vinnie, but not at 7.7 for ten years with a bum shoulder. I might love the player, but I'm not blind to his baggage. Check his stats, folks. Lang's looking better and better.

Great stuff. I hope Vinny hears it. He'd get a laugh too.

The trade is probably not going to happen because BG is way to cautious for this type of contract, but for the fear mongers to act like the deal would spell the DOOM of the Montreal Canadiens is a bit melodramatic.

When you not only gut the team for 1 player, you shove it hard against a shrinking cap you do DOOM the team. Look at Tampa Bay's history. The fire sale started with Richards, but the morons keep signing players to unrealistic deals.

Having one player at $7.7 million does not shove you against the cap. Many successful teams have at least one player making about that much namely Detroit, Boston, San Jose etc. Also if the price is higgins, pleks, and gorges, a prospect and a couple of picks it hardly guts the team especially since Paul Ranger is rumoured to be part of the deal. I don't like the length of Vinny's contract which is why I'd be hesitant to accept the trade. He'd probably be a good value player until the last couple of years of his contract.
Everyone keeps saying he has a bum shoulder as if it's a fact and that it'll never heal. He's already starting to pick it up after a slow start and is almost back to point-per-game pace.
Personally though i'd rather see Kovalchuk come here because he's younger, faster and a better goal scorer. He's also a right-handed shot.
Submitted by Bob Barker on Tue, 01/13/2009 - 21:07.
He's got 11 points in the 9 games since the Christmas break
If this Vinny trade goes down as proposed by the pundits then you can kiss Komy goodbye. He goes to the Rangers or the Islanders. We will not be able to afford him given Vinny's contract. Additionally you can kiss one or two of Kovy, Koivu, Tanguay or Lang goodbye because we will not be able to afford them.
Hey why not throw Price into the deal. If we want to wreck the team let's go for it. How about Vinny for Higgins, Pleks, Komy, Price and AK46. That seems about fair - we really need that big center with a bum shoulder.
Please Bob , do it, please wreck the team
I really want Vinny and some role players as a team - can't wait.

He was very ready to sign Briere for more money, so don't start with "the sky is falling" BS...!!
The difference in cap space with Vinny here and Plekanec & Higgins gone is a little over $3M. you don't think there's any way to unload $3M?

Breeze is half of that at 1.5mil - and he will be gone next season (fingers crossed)...and Dandy will be gone, so there is almost your 3mil right there.

HUGE difference, You didn't have LAng and Tanguay in the team.. and Komisarek at that point, no one thought he would be 4/5 million$ worthy.
Now you've got Lang, Tanguay, Komisarek, Kovy Koivu who are free agents this season and Carey PRice next season.
It's not a good idea IMO

About Dave Stubbs has been a sportswriter since 1976, which was roughly a decade after he wore the first of many holes through the knees of his jeans playing nets in road hockey (using a modified butterfly popularized by Hall of Famer Glenn Hall). He still has the welts to show on his shins from that rotten, frozen orange ball.
Stubbs kept thick hockey scrapbooks filled with game summaries and Gazette and Montreal Star stories, collected dozens of Bee Hive Corn Syrup photos and put a fortune of hockey cards through the spokes of his bikes. First book ever owned: Scrubs On Skates, the classic by Scott Young (Neil's dad).
Stubbs's fantasy is to travel back in time to the 1950s and watch the great Canadiens dynasty that won five consecutive Stanley Cups. Or a decade earlier, to watch Elmer Lach centre Rocket Richard and Toe Blake on the fearsome Punch Line. Or at least to get Rogie Vachon into the Hockey Hall of Fame – where he belongs.
