The Habs Centennial season ended with a thud almost a week ago and the rumblings from media and fans has yet to subside as the team was eliminated by the Bruins in the first round of the playoffs after barely qualifying for postseason play. It was hardly the way everything was supposed to go as the team marked its 100 years. What happens next is anyone’s guess, with 10 UFA’s, the team could be drastically different next season.

Mike Boone, Pat Hickey and Kevin Mio look back at the season that was and look ahead to what the team could look like next season.

I enjoyed the puckcast and look forward to the next one post draft. Tanguay: I think he should be number one priority. Koivu: Sign him. Komi: let him walk. He'll ask for too much. Kovi: this is a tough call. Depends what he wants to stay. Dandy: try to sign him. Schneider: keep him Bouillon: let him go. the Bros.: give them another year to mature. Pleks: try to trade him Lang: too old to recover from injury. Let him go. Higgins: sign him. Laraque: buy him out. Tommy K: good role player. Resign. D'Agostini: Resign. Chipchura: Not sure what happened to this guy. Trade him? Stewart: Sign him. Brisebois: retire. Lecavalier: he would be a great asset if we could knock a couple of million off his cap hit. Let someone else pay his salary.

Mr. Boone, please watch all 5 games of the Flyers series again. Count the weak goals. Price made R.J. Umberger look like Pavel Bure. We outshot and outchanced the Flyers in EVERY GAME. If Price had played as well as Biron (or Biron played as bad as Price), we would have easily won the series. The weak goals let the team down and when the players don't have confidence in their goaltending, they don't have a chance. Why did he get pulled for Halak for game 4? Please watch the series again.

OMFG!!! A new PuckCast Episode??? Inconceivable! Here's how I feel about this season: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf7c0dci1Bw I've made a huge mistake...

There really wasn't much to talk about this year!

Great show guys. I agree with most of what was discussed. If LeCavalier is moved, Montreal should get it and will IMO. Tanguay needs to stay. _____________________________________________________________________________ -"I have 21 000 bosses". -Carey Price -Time to end Koivu's reign. Enough is enough. -Come back home Vincent... We need you.

Thanks for the puckcast. Always entertaining and insightful and the Moses Laraque comparison was hilarious. Gotta give the Kosts bros & pleks at least another season before giving up on them. It won't be very easy to replace those empty roster spots with anybody significantly better. Sign Tanguay long term but less than 5M per season. I share the on the fence opinion on Kovy. I definitely see Koivu & Komisarek going to other teams. I would be happy if Dandenault got signed as a 6th D again depending on the money. Forget the rest of the ufa Ds. I wouldn't sign Lang. He was a great player for us but I don't think he'll be the same after his injury at his age and he's at best a stop gap measure. I'd rather see more effort and cap space money put into getting a viable long term center with size even if it means sacrificing a season with an even weaker set of centers than we had this past season. Habs needs to get a proper defensive coach. That should be a strong priority right after getting a head coach.

If you guys have nothing to do...watch Canada play Halak and the Slovakians at the Worlds on TSN at 2pm

2-0 for Canada in the 1st. Halak is wearing his Habs goalie mask.

It's interesting to listen to Boone and Hickey sort through the ashes of this past season and try to put their finger on who started the fire and what can be salvaged from it. I didn't hear a lot that I would disagree with, but I did hear a lot of "I don't know", whether overtly stated or implied. I guess that's pretty much how we all feel right now. If Les Glorieux are to be more successful next year, decisions have to be taken right away, beginning with who will own the team. If that drama plays on throughout the summer, I suppose the status quo will happen by default. This may or may not be a good thing. The status quo means that Gainey stays. This means that he will organize the coaching structure. (I sincerely hope he does not decide to do both jobs. It's too much, and, as Hickey stated, he hasn't demonstrated that he has a coaching skill set that works in today's NHL.) Any new coach needs to be hired in time to participate in a meaningful way in the upcoming draft, and he should also have input into any free agent signings or trades. If this doesn't happen, you have a coach with built in excuses if the team doesn't do well. If Gainey is let go, once again the new G.M. must be hired right away. There is a ton of work to do before free agency and the draft, and less than two months to do it in. (This may be the strongest reason to keep Gainey. At least he's up to speed, knows what's in the system, and has a sense of where the team is headed.) What worries me most is that this whole thing could turn into a summer-long soap opera, with everything unfolding by default rather than because Gilette, who's busy trying to staunch the flow of red ink, or Boivin, whose position appears to be largely titular, made any clear decisions about where the team should be going. My only solace is that ending up with Gainey by default is way better than ending up with JFJ, or Brian Lawton by default.

I have been drooling over the thought of having vinny, saku, lang and lapierre as our centers for quite some time now! i dont see any other team that could match us down the middle if that were the case. Trade the little girl.trade jaro(hes great... but price is apparently the guy and if were not going to use him we might as well get something for him) K bros.......ship em ..not to T.O but send them to tampa as part of the vinny deal. bring back l'Artiste, tangay, higgins and schneider(schneids to help out with weber like he did havelid and kronwall...but keep his PT where he wont brun out/hurt himself). im sure some people will disagree...all i ask is why?

Great Puckcast. I always enjoy listening to Pat Hickey as we don't get to read his comments here on HI/O. He always has a realistic take on the team as he is very close to the Hab scene on a day to day basis. Mike Boone had the line of the day on Plekanec. There's always an element of truth to sarcasm. Shoutout to the Puckcast team - instead of late June, why not do a summer broadcast around the middle of July which would not only encompass the amateur draft but also some up-to-date trades and free agent signings? It could be a perfect summer hockey fix.

good call on mid july

Just speculating, and have no real reason to believe it would be possible, but how about Larry Robinson returning to the fold in some kind of coaching position. Has to be better than Jarvis, don't you think? I wonder if it could work in any way?

mrhabby's picture
last i heard LR was not interested in doing any work for Les Habs. to much pressure. he would be a good choice though.

Habsrule1's picture
I know the salaries are insane, but I'd love to see Vinny & Marty in Montreal. And Boone, sorry...I love Peice but with just average goaltending the Habs beat the flyers in last year's playoffs, You can admit that or keep your eyes closed. Can't give up on the K Bros yet...there is incredible talent there. I like the idea of Lang between them for at least one season. How was Brisebois overpaid? That being said, keep him for the league minimum asa a real # 7....or let him retire, either or. Please at least mention that Demers was misunderstood, He actually talked to Tanguay about it. Demers is a very knowlegeable man, whether you guys like him or not. Besides that, loved the puck-cast. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

1st player to be signed is Tanguay. Komisarek won't stay. wants too much money and not worth it, because there's no offence to his game. Kovalev should be signed for 1 year old. trade Pleks and the invisible Kost's brothers. buy out Laraque, send Breezecrap out to pasture, get an experienced goalie, trade Havlak, let Bouillon walk, and if Lang agrees to 1 year at no more than 2.5 mil, ok, otherwise he can walk as well with Schneider. So what does this all mean? well it depends if the team is sold. if sold, let Gainey go, hire a competent GM and hire a competent head coach, bring in a former Dman as assistant coach, get rid of Jarvis, Muller, Melanson as well.

ooder's picture
so the solution is that simple...how did anyone else not think of it... or how about this..gainey stays because no one else can work here..he is level headed and fair. he is trying to convince players to come to a place with shitty weather, fans and media who criticize and scrutinize your every move and the highest taxes around. wouldn't you say he has quite a tough job ahead of him. gainey is pretty much working with the impossible and yet we still have a good farm system with upcoming talent without ever tanking to last place and he doesn't throw out ridiuclous money to undeserving players (i.e. LECAVALIER, gomez and others) --- we need a kovalev

I was just thinking the other day, "Wow it's been ages since the last PuckCast!" So now that that desire has been fulfilled, it's been a long time since the sun shined here in Halifax for a full week. ----- "Come on, let's keep a little optimism here." -- Han Solo, Return of the Jedi

That RDS poll.....ridiculous about Koivu. He should be their # 1 priority. you can't go out and buy heart & soul. He would thrive as a 2nd line centre. If not here, it'll be somewhere else. Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

ooder's picture
i totally agree with you...don't listen to the morons bellow you. i don't remeber canucks fans wanting to get rid off trevor linden because god forbid, he got old (how are he !!!) or avalanche fans wanting to get rid of joe sakic for the same reason. fans here are disgusting and stupid. a guy pours his hear and soul out into a garbage team for 11 years and now we should get rid of him because he is old --- we need a kovalev

HardHabits's picture
I know you're all gonna jump down my throat for this but I'd rather have Grabovski than Koivu. I can see it now, we trade the Kost bros to T.O. and those 3 haunt us for years. My biggest concern about Saku is his propensity for injury. He's had maybe one season in his whole career without getting injured.

citizenSanto's picture
have to disagree with you on that point HH. But no, I've given up jumping down your throat. I will agree however, with trading the Kost bros. to T.O. That would certainly comeback to haunt us. Never gonna happen though as those 3 will never work together. Too much hate.

HardHabits's picture
Loyalty, although admirable, doesn't garner winnings when betting on horses.

Bryan's picture
I'm almost tempted to do that. We get some good *prospects/picks back from Toronto, and Grabovski and the Kostitsyns destroy all the chemistry on the team and ruin the season! Yes! * - Based on the assumption Toronto HAD prospects. _______________________________ Montreal: Home to the worst fans in sports.

he can't score, theefore he must go.

Seems like about 7000 thinks otherwise... 2nd line center with a lot of heat and soul... i would much prefer goals and assists. _____________________________________________________________________________ -"I have 21 000 bosses". -Carey Price -Time to end Koivu's reign. Don't cry man... it's just a survey... Oh and... Habsrule1's picture
I wouldn't cry. Part of me would like to see Koivu leave for his own sanity. The man has been underappreciated here for way too long. It took about 10 years for him to get decent linemates. Koivu bleeds bleu, blanc, rouge almost as much as I do :-P Go Habs Go!! "I can't hear what Jeremy (Roenick) is saying because my Stanley Cup rings are in my ears" - Patrick Roy

all of germany thought hitler was a good idea about 65 years ago and i guess they where wrong. btw latendresse doesn't offer goals or assists unless he is playing with koivu so you might want to consider chanign your avatar --- we need a kovalev

HardHabits's picture
Can we keep politics out of this. You're essentially equating people wanting to change the make-up and character of the team with Nazism. That's a far stretch by any means. Renewal is a good thing and both Saku and the Habs need some, many people think not together. That isn't fascism, it's not even democracy, it's simply freedom of speech in an online poll.

citizenSanto's picture
while I don't agree with your point about Saku, I will defend HH's right to say so. good on you.

citizenSanto's picture
WHAT!, all of Germany did not feel that way, and if you knew anything about history you would retract such an insulting statement.

ooder's picture
he was voted in with something like 43% of the votes no? thats a pretty big portion...sorry.. i was just trying to porve a point to the guy below us..that jsut because a group of people think one way doesn't mean its right --- we need a kovalev

Interesting stuff from RDS.ca What player should be priority: Quel joueur autonome doit être la priorité du Canadien cet été? Résultats Mike Komisarek (7%) Saku Koivu (2%) Alex Tanguay (68%) Alex Kovalev (21%) Francis Bouillon (2%) Nombre de participants : 7469 If you can read french, take a look at this: http://www.rds.ca/canadien/chroniques/273768.html _____________________________________________________________________________ -"I have 21 000 bosses". -Carey Price -Time to end Koivu's reign. Enough is enough. -Come back home Vincent... We need you.

So a whole lot of french speaking people, who have been waiting for a home grown hero for years, prefer Tanguay over the rest. Not surprising and a french superstar would be great in quebec. He's a good player...no more and no less. TO NEXT YEAR...

Hockey Socks's picture
Sounds about right. Tanguay has the most to offer this team going into the future and probably the only one worth 4-5 million. --- From Game 1 to the Stanley Cup Final. I'll be there.
