The Canadiens started a tough month of December on Tuesday night by dropping the ball in a 3-0 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team’s third straight loss. The good news is that some of the team’s injured players have started returning, but the results are still not very positive on the ice. This week finally marks the end of the team’s centennial celebrations with the game on Friday night against the Boston Bruins.

Gazette sports writers Pat Hickey and Dave Stubbs, as well as columnist Mike Boone and Kevin Mio discuss the poor performance against the Leafs, the nine straight starts by Carey Price, the Molson brother officially becoming the owners of the Canadiens and what the return of all the injured players means to the lineup.

Just listened to podcast in car, crikey you got it all off your chests today, including the heavy breathing. On paper though the team looked good at the start of the year, are the new guys really that much worse than what we have lost. Gionta, cammaleri, Mara and Gill to me look far better and excellent aquisitions, Gomez needs a kick up the backside at $8m a year, thats scandalous and unless he can score 70 or more points, its a bad contract for Gainey to take on. Does Gainey deserve to go, well some of his management has been woeful, examples being Streit, Souray and Kovalev. But still I so want him to turn this ship around, I want Bob to be the guy to get us there. maybe two kostitsyns and a halak for a good trade and chuck in a Gomez if someone can't count.

Guys,

Just wanted to say that this is EASILY my favorite hockey podcast-- hell,  my favorite podcast period. Superb commentary.

I doubt this team will stop selling out any time soon even if we do start tanking. Simple reason is that we all witnessed the lockout, we all went a year without hockey and I think that year let alot of people know how much they needed and missed the habs. I have no doubt however that people will boo like mad and make the Bell center a hostile place to play if we ever do get really bad for a long period, but even then the tickets will sell. And that I think is the scary part, the ownership will never really have any reason to clean house or try anything drastic as long as the money keeps flowing in. With the Molsons for now atleast, we probably get a more involved and pationate owner, wether that is a good or bad thing remains to be seen, depends on their collective hockey sense.

Now I'm not of the fire gainey group of fans, I think hes done a decent job, but if we do somehow miss the playoffs by a large amount in multiple years with no signs of improving, then something would clearly have to be done. Most owners, with the money still flowing probably wouldn't bother, but the Molsons should work to our benefit int hat respect, as pationate fans they would not want a losing team for long, I just hope they don't get too pationate...

i really think it is time for gainey to go...how many gms with the same number of years behind them   in any of the other pro leagues would survive if their club looked like the habs are looking today ...worse this team has very little upside in the next few years  based on the players we have in the organization...

ooder's picture

um let's see glen sather, don wadell, garth snow are a few... i ams ure there are others.

honestly ic an't complain about the players we have other then gomez (but why beat a dead horse).

cammalleri is a legit sniper, pleks is playing great, ak46 and sk 74 are starting to step it up.

we have a great goalie in price, a very good offesnive defesnmen in markov and a few good ones coming up.

we have a great coach in martin and a couple of guys who can truly grind like pyatt and white.

this doom and gloom bullshit is starting to get really annoying.

--- we need a kovalev

Kovalev [ka-va-leov]: A player who makes you jump out of your seat with a wicked deke or a sick shot and makes you say: "Did you see that!!"

amen!

Crosby on Ovi hit: "Some guys see suspensions as something they learn from. Other guys brush it off and do it again." You can soo feel the animosity between these guys! But the funny part is that I do agree with him because I don't think Ovechkin is gonna stop doing what he does, punish people with his checks.

Doesnt help when Ovechkin is quoted as saying this suspension might make him "more angry".

Those two will always be rivals, it's a natural thing and it's good for the league. I hate that they don't play each other until the New Year personally.

I know! nd imagine a winter classic with those two. That would be too Epic for Bettman to think about!Instead we have the Flyers and the Bruins. Becaue for some reason Versus thinks not many people would have watched if Boston played Washington.

They'll get around to it, the Capitals/Penguins were such an incredible playoff series that they have to consider a Winter Classic between the two highest-flying stars in the NHL.

Dec. 9th can't come and pass soon enough. I can't wait for the 100 years celebration fiasco to be over and done with. Celebrating 100 years of excellence with the two worst years in Habs history. Awesome!!!

Also...I vehemently disagree with Dave and his assesment of the Montreal hockey audience. To say that we no longer know or care as much about hockey as they did back when you had to walk 40 miles to the Forum barefoot in the snow is an insult to both the people who comment on this blog (we go to games too you know) and the younger generation as a whole.

I may not have known 22 of the stanley cups, but I do know my hockey.

Dave Stubbs's picture

You've misunderstood my meaning, even if it was expressed clumsily.

I'm not saying that Montreal fans of today do not know their hockey. What I was trying to say was that the fans of the Forum era came to a game only for the hockey; it wasn't a multimedia experience that it is today. There was no animator in the stands, no mascot, no video scoreboard, peewee games between periods, t-shirt cannons, etc., etc.

That is all part of today's NHL, I understand that. But I believe that a good portion of fans come to a Canadiens game today as much for the experience of the game and all that goes with it than they do purely for the 60 minutes of action. That's not a knock on them. But there is a huge difference between Canadiens fans of the 1950s, '60s and '70s than the fans of today, who are influenced to a large degree by all the bells and whistles that surround the game.

Personally I used to come because of the Molson girls. I mean, the team wasn;t much to look at for the last 15 years, so thank god for Marie-Josee in section 300 something.

The Cat's picture

I agree. People are buying because of the sizzle and not the steak...If the fans enjoyed hockey as much as the whole 'happening', then we would see Quebec Junior teams with more attendance. I remember going to the Sherbrooke Castors when I was younger, it was packed all the time almost. It was great hockey thats why people went. Its different today though, theres more competition for the peoples entertainment dollars.

Totally agree Dave. I'm 49 and lived in Ottawa from 1979-87-made many trips to the Forum.

I noticed the difference at my first Toronto Raptors game in 1999-the game was an afterthought.

Now the Leafs and I'm sure all NHL teams feel they have to "entertain" between whistles and TV timeouts.

Fant-HAB-ulous's picture

Well that's true re: the whole entertainment package, and thanks for responding.

But you did say that people booing last night probably didn't even know why they were booing. Trust me..we knew why we were booing.

Also, I was sitting beside a man who came down to watch the game from Hamilton. He's a Habs fan and comes down to every Toronto/Montreal game. He said that our whole game experience is FAR better than it is in Toronto. All the glitter extras, from the opening slideshow, to the final siren, make it worth it for him to drive the 7 hours. Plus, at the end of a game like that there better be something more than just hockey...'cause there wasn't much of that last night from the Habs.

Dave Stubbs's picture

Passion of today's fan is very well understood. I have, however, heard fans start booing for not much reason at all. For some, it's follow the leader. We can see this actually happen from the press gallery; when we look backward, away from the ice, we can see high into the stands. The level of interest in the game sometimes is very low and some fans take it upon themselves to entertain/impress each other.

That said, I was booing last night's performance. It was appalling.

Hey guys and gals. How many of you are on Twitter?

At this pivotal point of the season, I think it would be fun for us to get organized a bit and get some HIO specific twitter tags. Here are my suggestions:

#inbobwetrust - tag for why Bob's plan will ultimately bring us #25

#firegainey - tag for why Bob is leading our team into the crapper faster than bad mexican food

in addition to the usual #Habs tag.

Here's an example from my Twitter feed:

Pat Hickey on the Habs: "They were shut out by a guy having a heart attack and by Yann Danis's backup." #habs #firegainey

Anyone? I think it'll be fun.  Follow me @craz11

oh here's another one:

Chipchura for a 4th round pick. That's a wool-pulling for sure. #inbobwetrust #Habs

C'mon, Boone, fess up. It was you. The Alouettes cheerleaders had just gone by on their float during the Alouettes' Grey Cup parade, and at least some of the girls are named Chantal.

Actually, we add the heavy breathing in post-production. Many fans have told us it enhances their listening experience, and we're trying to broaden the appeal of the Puckcast, make it kind of Don Cherry Meets Barry White.

Nice that you guys put so much effort in, you really care about us.
