The Canadiens have a new general manager in Pierre Gauthier after Bob Gainey announced his resignation on Monday. Gainey will remain with the team as a special adviser to Gauthier, however. Gainey took over as GM of the team in the summer of 2003, the team's 15th GM. In his close to seven seasons, the team has made the playoffs four times, but also changed coaches twice and underwent a massive makeover last summer.
Today, Gazette Sports Editor Stu Cowan, sports writer Pat Hickey and columnist Mike Boone, along with Kevin Mio, discuss Gainey's announcement and where we go from here.

Thanks for the link harditya. Gionta, Markov, Gorges, all praising Gainey. They must be real dumb...not knowledgeable like so many posters here.
...it is just the dumbing-down and extremism of a great proportion of The Habs' Fandom ...in addition to politics and economics ...which made the success of Bob Gainey convincing talent to Quebec/Montreal ...and The Montreal Canadiens ...so hit 'n miss
...I Myself doubt whether The Montreal Canadiens will ever again win a Stanley Cup ...unless Habs' Fans come to Their sanity

Why do you keep on posting links to a story in the National Post from 2008?
Blaming the Fans for the current state of the Montreal Canadiens is beyond irrational. Talk about dumbing down and extreme viewpoints.
...WHY do You call Yourself TripleX ? ...Your likely reply will make as much sense as WHY I link to The National Post link
...try reading the Post article ...You are FREE to think WHAT You want of it ...To Me ?, it speaks for itself ...and, as relevent today as the date it was published
...Blaming Our Fans ? ...There are many great Montreal Canadien's Hockey Fans ...I don't know IF You are One of Them, as this is first I have heard of You ...yet, there are unfortunately too many so-called fans calling themselves Habs' Fans that I have great reservations about as to Their credibility, and to the damage they do to Our ability to reinvent once again the Montreal Canadiens as an elite Team
...religion or fandom ? ...in the extreme, without balance and logical reflection, both lead to dysfunction and failure
...relevent to the Montreal Canadiens ...the irrational, over-the-top nut-jobs amoung Our Fans and medias are a very heavy-weight to overcome to allow anyone to logically and rationally rebuild Our mediocre Team ...IMO

Isn't it about time for the Halak/Price stats release from eyesontheprize?

Not until Price gets a some wins.
Just kidding...

this is a new time for the montreal canadiens. I dont know enough about gauthier, but I hope he is a new force to be reckoned with in the NHL. I am optimistic. I am a believer. Year after year. If we need to replace him then that is that. But we should ride him until we have a better option. Sign plek if you can, but realize that doing so will leave you without a sizable center top six forward that we have all wished for for years. Engqvist is the brightest prospect for this position considering size. if we choose to make smart trade decisions, then maybe we can opt for depth. plek will always need stud wingers to be a top five contender top line. we can do it if we fill his line, and plek/ak46 will do. if pouliot stays healthy we could have a serious top six on the front. but considering size and depth we need more shooter/scorer types in our depth to fill in for our injured mini men. i love em all, gomez is a rip but he could be great with some poul/gio consistent time on ice without injuries.
dish: spacek, mara, hammer, bring in some stay at home D's but look at a solid plug for fill in top six role and know that we have at least 1.5 solid D's to bring in from the minors. dish the rest of the useless ones (fill in blank)
sign: MAB for less - if he is unreasonable then goodbye, XXXX (fill in later with proper possibilities)
- pouliot OBV and try and get a low price
- SK for cheap too
- pyatt for cheaper
- darche because he is having an effect
sell: lapierre now for whatever we can get / package him with the dish category. now. we will not win this year
Sign MAB?
We have a premier offensive talent being groomed in the minors right now and were it not for his mental development he would already be playing with the big club.
MAB has no future with the habs. PK Subban will be assuming point duties on the power play next year. And we always have Weber if we need a small, weak power play specialist.
Pyatt doesnt have the size or aggresiveness we need for fourth line duty and Darche is an injury call up only.
The free agent market has better role players becoming available.
I'm glad to see Lehtonen go West. He used to give us fits.
I'm happy as long as he is never a Hab...
People on this site talk about Price being an overrated draft pick...Lehtonen went second overall in 2002.
DiPietro is the same kind of deal. Injuries really killed their growth. Ironically, you can sort of say the same for Price when he went down with that ankle injury last year... He was actually doing well before then.
Yeah, but Lehtonen is just plain out of shape.
and he isn't 22 anymore and Price's stats are way better (though they should be better)
I wonder if Pleky will be the next ribeiro.
If Pleky became the next Ribeiro, I'd want him to leave
You mean rolling around on the ice faking an injury and sullying our honour?

Don't forget slapping other players when the refs get in between scrums or as soon as those players turn around!
Boivin and Gauthier reveal goalie plans here. Forgive repeat.
What it boils down to if you can read between the lines is that it's all Halak all the time, baby.
Until he screws up of course...

Seems like all the "wrong" teams won tonight. Tampa, Boston, Isles... I would even have preferred see Ottawa lose (against a western team). The only "good" win for us was the Hurricanes over Florida. We need the W tomorrow. Who's in nets??
"love cannot drown truth, Nefertiti"
sure it helps when the "right" teams win or lose but we can't count on that. we have to be focus on winning our own games. i'll admit, it'll be a hard task with our top goal scorers out (13, 46, 57,...) but it's what needs to be done. the boys are in-charge of their own destiny.
The 6.5th sense told me it's Price tomorrow.
www.leftwinglock.com is a good source but their administrator gets info about Montreal's starting goaltender from RDS and Dave Stubbs' twitter page. Starter should be known by 12 pm.
JM only names his starters on the day of a game, he likes to build up suspense.
Price thrown into the fire, or Halak continuing to be No. 1 down the stretch, guess we'll find out.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
I think it will be Halak. Price should play one of the two games against Philly.
I have a feeling Price wants to stand on his head and steal a game. I hope he gets the start.
I'd like to see either start, and that might be a first for me this season. I'm scared that, whoever's in nets, he might have to suffer an embarassing loss... And an embarassing loss with Price would be more harmful right now (in terms of self-confidence, stats, and public opinion) than it would be to Halak. So I think if Price is in, there will be more pressure, and I'll pray he's up to it.
"love cannot drown truth, Nefertiti"
Same here, I think this an opportunity for him to take on the challenge that he's not as safe with Gainey out of the GM spot and he now really has to earn his job. Could be a kick in the *** for him that needs. See what we get, he's had some great games this season, not many but he doesn't deserve the flak he's recieved. Time for him to shut up his critics.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
Amen.
He should let his game do the talking. I like his cocky attitude in net. His in your face style. "Try and put one by me." I know he has it in him.
I would so love to see that. I can't say I am optimistic it'll happen though, and even as hard as I've been on Price, I'd be happier than ever to see him get his game back.
it's a team game. we can't blame it on the goalie. but somtimes your goalie has to go out and steal a game. i'm hoping that'll be the case tomorrow with price in net. 14 game win streak for the caps, eh. i bet you price could be an end to that. there's been change in montreal. maybe price will get the start.
Again.
Chicago-Dallas going to SO, some nice SO players there as well.

Some European commentators filling in the ESPN-Europe listeners, no idea what language.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
Niemi stoned 5 Dallas shooters while Versteeg sneaked a quick snap shot through Turco's 5-hole in the 5th round of the shootout to win i for Chicago. Some very nice stops by Niemi including blocking Riberio who's a sneaky guy when it comes to those.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
Could've been Turco's last game as a Star (according to Eklund).
Looks like Dallas doesn't need a goalie anymore. Tick them off the list
I think they'll trade Lehtonen in the summer unless they trade for/sign a good but not elite (yet, at least) goaltender (Ellis, Halak, Renne, etc.) and go with a 1A/1B situation. Lehtonen's injuries are too much of a problem over the course of a season for a team that wants to make the playoffs, especially in the West. That being said, it seems like an awful lot to give up your best defensive prospect (on a weak defensive team) for what would amount to a rental. Maybe the Stars will have a good run in the final stretch and flip him in the offseason, but I think they'll have a tough time making the playoffs the unless a couple of teams start to really drop off.
Yeah, Lehtonen is the answer...lol!
I just got my laptop back from HP after having it repaired and now I'm gonna throw it out the window. Why you ask? Because of that stupid Julie who loves hockey. OMG that was horrible. Hadn't heard it in a good 2 months and pouff.....and she wouldn't mute either. Eric Engels seriously needs to move. Sorry guys...It's been a tough day and I had to get it out before my poor HP pays the price.
"I gotta a feeling...that tonight's gonna be a good night!"
Well there's your first mistake. HP laptops suck! Sony, Toshiba, or [ugh] Macs are the most durable laptops.
Once you go Mac, you'll never go back. Trust me. I've been on a Mac for 10 years now. 0 problems. Except I ran over my old iBook with my car. It still works. But a little...um....crunched?
Use Firefox and install Ad-Blocker Plus... Block Julie FOREVER!
I've got two HP laptops at home. You know what? I WILL NEVER BUY ANY hp FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!
H.P. laptops are shite ....one cost me $1200.00 AND CRAPPED OUT AFTER 1 YEAR and the warrentee expired they wanted $8 hun to fix and all due to their crap parts....I now own only Acer and no problamo...........
Lol im on an hp laptop right now, and i thank God that i purchased the 3 year warranty. 3 consecutive motherboard replacements. Im waiting for it to bust again since the warranty states that future shop gives me a new pc instead of repairing it for a 4th time. 3 times it fried in 3.5 months, ridiculous. Never buying an hp again.
Cheap Acer laptop baby, woo! My poor mother has a HP laptop.
As soon as I bought my HP lappie, I reformatted it, and didnt install all the shart that is imbedded in it. It runs like a champ and its 2 years old at this point.
Losers Even After Forty two Seasons
Exactly what to do with all pcs and lappies with too many junk apps.

T.J. Oshie is a brilliant hockey player. He will have a break-out season soon.
More news. (Yes, this is what happens when a 10th grader has no homework.)
Marian Gaborik limped off at practice on Tuesday after the New York Rangers' leading scorer was cut on the right knee by the ice skate of goalie Henrik Lundqvist in a collision.
HAHAHA Poor guy! Oh wait..
Gainey will alway be vue as a great human been before Gm or player and so it should be.
I agree my friend! Hey your English is improving! Keep it up, mon ami! Bien fait!
oh yeah ? maybe you oughta lace up your skates and contribute to Stanley Cup winning teams before you think you know what kind of commitment and sacrifice is involved
WTF man? That was very uncalled for - and inappropriate as well. I think you completely missed the point....

Pleks looked pretty sad, too. Heck, I'm sad. Gainey was a very respected person. I'm glad he took on another management position. In Gainey we trust.
thanks bud.
No problemo Chris
Thanks for the link!
I'm curios to see how they react on the ice though.
Give up attitude, or....
I am not really curious to see how they react. I've noticed that whenever someone gets traded or a contract is bought out or some sort of injury takes place, les Habs play extremely well for 2-3 games then go back to their old, bad habits.
Here's to hope that this time they keep marching on!
Hey, I'll take 3 extremely good games. That would be a win against Washington and two wins against the Flyers. Provided they don't crash and burn after that, it would go a long way towards making the playoffs.
I'm most curious to see how Price performs now that he knows his biggest supporter no longer controls his fate with the club. Perhaps he'll take it as a challenge to raise himself to his previous levels to prove he should be the top goalie? Who knows, but for a kid who was praised for being clutch at all his previous hockey destinations, it's an interesting challenge for the young netminder.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
January was our healthiest month, only 1 injury(AK).. We went 4-9..
Mara, Spacek, SK74 missed a couple I believe. I guess now it's only 6-8 weekers we recognize though eh? haha
Even if we play well the rest of the way.....
There will be alot of score board watching, crazy year!
What are the odds of the Habs making the playoffs this year?
Guess before you click on the link.
45% isn't so bad considering. The next observation could prove more telling though. 11 teams have a 97% or better chance of making the playoffs, 6 of them in the West the other 5 in the East, however Philly at 85% looks good. So that makes 2 spots open between Tampa, Boston and Montreal in the East with possibly Atlanta or NY Rangers in it if either of them could get on a win streak. Looks like Montreal and Boston will be fighting for the last playoff spot.
With that in mind, I wonder if the Habs will try for a rental. I doubt they will be sellers as two home playoff games are too much money to pass up. My hunch is that they will just try and heal their wounds over the break and try to make the post-season and go for a strong playoff run.
As much as this team has sucked on many, well most nights they still have shown some grit (albeit pint sized) and have shown flashes of brilliance. The best thing to happen to this team would be to go on a major winning streak between the Olympic break and the playoffs.
I figured 50% but see it's even less. Hmmmm.
what? that low? insane. i guessed 78%. i was never a fan of these statistics. false hope or lack thereof... which seems to be the case here.
Given opposition games in hand, I would say maybe 40-45%.
Just as good as NYI,TAM,FLA,ATL...
Someone's gotta start slipping away.
taking a wild guess here, a little under 50... maybe about 44% or so ?
man, that was close! although I wonder how the injuries and the players' reaction to Gainey's departure might influence that figure...
25%.Maybe higher if we continue the path of trading picks/prospects for a rental to grab a low seed
I'm curious to see how the players react to Gainey "stepping down"
http://watch.tsn.ca/nhl/#clip265110
Don't fear them embrace them! We have yet to plumb the depths of true suck. As I posted elsewhere, both I and Mel Brooks are waiting for the day the Habs dress 23 francophone players. Molson, Quebecor, do you really think there is a difference?
Defensive prospect and a 4th-rounder for a former 2nd overall, but considering Lehtonen's fragility, they may end up getting more use out of Vishnevisky than Dallas does from Lehtonen. Who knows...
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
I agree, those are some really good prospects in Bergfors, Cormier and Vishnevisky. But look who they had to give in return, players that were drafted 1st and 2nd overall. He has made stupid trades like Coburn for Zhitnik. He couldn't keep star players like Hossa and Heatley, and now Kovalchuk.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's Evander Kane or Tobias Enstrom in the future.
Lehtonen has become a disappointment, injury-plagued goalies can't be relied upon to be No. 1 and Pavelec/Hedberg are taking over without any of the same concerns I believe. He was a bad choice more than one could say they threw away a star or superstar player, Kovalchuk was mishandled but Lehtonen? Good luck finding a good deal for him really.
Pitkanen, Bouwmeester, Semin, Ward, Upshall, Lupul, Steen, a lot of wasted opportunities for Atlanta that would have been a lot better for them.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
hes a pretty good player vishnevsky he racks up around 50 points a year in the ahl which is very good for a dman
